Debates
The Admin said a lot about the religion debate on Mary Jo's post about her posts getting zapped. I think it's important to have a debate about, well, debates. I think debates are fine and great and good, but I think it's important to respect each other's opinions at the same time. I also think that religion is a little bit too... well, you know - for here, and that maybe we should stick to Twiight if we we want to argue. If you haven't read Twilight, well then, come up with some other controversial book. :) What do you all think?

One time I tried some of my dad's beverage, and yeah... another good reason never to drink. Same for smoking and drugs, naturally (not that I've ever tried THOSE, of course).
However, personal opinions aside, I still say the drinking age should be 18. And I think smoking might be better off simply banned. :/

My dad did let me try some beer, it tastes BAD. If you havn't tasted beer then you shouldn't EVER. I don't thInk that smoking should be BAND (Though I do hate the smell of smoke and it is a fire hazard and it increases the risk of cancer.) If someone wants to do it, they can do it. here are some reasons:
1)If people ban it, then more people would go to jail.
2) It's someones own choice, if they like it they should be able to do it.
3) Someone can stop whenever they want to.
4) People get warned on when they should stop, most people stop then. There is a lot of different stop-smoking things.
Mary W. why do you think smoking should be banned?

I agree 100%, Mary W. I christen you The Best Debater! (Though we may not always agree.) :)

LOL! Thanks!
(Ha, it's better than what the kids in my debate club call me--Bam, because they say I hit people with points like BAM. Extremely odd. :/ )

Who's in a debate club? :S

I personally think that it should stay at 21. Reasons
being that it is proven that, up until age 21, your brain
is still developing, ( yes, I know it sounds funny to say
that...) and drinking under aged makes you that much
more likely to get addicted. Even though it's just a few
years difference, the age should remain 21, that's my
opinion. And by the way, I don't think drinking is a
good idea in the first place. I have a few family
members who have became addicted and I know what
it can do to you, just to put in my two cents.
(May 8, 2009 - 6:47 pm)
Well, I agree that drinking is bad, but that's really all that I can agree with you on, because I don't think it's fair to take wine or beer away from the people who actually enjoy, but don't get addicted or anything, so making alcohol illegal would be sort of stringent, I think. It's a matter of personal responsibility, if you ask me. Which is why the age should be 18: to teach young adults responsibility early on in life.
(May 9, 2009 - 10:09 am)
No, I don't mean they should make alcohol illegal, but,
like I said, there are facts behind why the drinking age
is 21, because anyone under that age is still developing
(brainwise) and they'll be more likely to get addicted.
And I'm not making this stuff up, just so you know.
Back when I was still being public schooled the teacher
was talking to us about drinking, to make us aware and
all, and she said that anyone under the age of 21 is that
much more likely to get addicted. There's a purpose why
that's been the legal age for so many years, in my opinion.
(May 9, 2009 - 6:44 pm)
Well, yes, I've heard the theory about the brain still developing. But I believe that if you're a strong enough person, resisting addiction will actually help your brain develope.
Though I must say, your statement about it being the legal age for "so many years" is a teensy bit objectable to. For a long time, like, two centuries or something, children as young an infants and toddlers drank beer because most water and milk were full of bacteria or being used for something else necessary. And after that, anyone twelve or older (but mainly males) routinely drank. Then, in- if I'm not mistaken- I believe it was some time in the mid twentieth century- the law became eighteen, and then twenty-one.
I think I've got all my facts correct up here; correct me if I'm wrong.
(May 10, 2009 - 12:23 pm)
Well, that may be true about the "so many years"
statement, but like many, many other counless things,
we've learned over the years that drinking so young is
not good. People used to smoke completely without
thinking it was bad for you at all a matter of decades ago
(give or take), but we know a bit better now. We know, even
though many people do still smoke, that it is a great health
hazard. I still believe the legal drinking age should be 21.
That's my opinion and I'll agree to disagree with you.
(May 11, 2009 - 1:40 pm)
Well, yes, though there is a difference between twelve and eighteen. But that's just me; everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. *nod*

I'm never a good debator - my friend calls me "The Peacemaker" in school because I have arguments. However, just to present another discussion point, what's to say that if it's lowered to 18, people won't be wanting it to be 17 in a few years? 16? 15? Sometimes if something starts - like lowering the drinking age - people think it's okay to keep going. Just a thought.
(May 11, 2009 - 4:06 pm)
Yes, I agree with that, too. People may start lowering and lowering the age, and that definitely wouldn't be good (again, that's just my opinion).
