Debates

The Admin said a lot about the religion debate on Mary Jo's post about her posts getting zapped. I think it's important to have a debate about, well, debates. I think debates are fine and great and good, but I think it's important to respect each other's opinions at the same time. I also think that religion is a little bit too... well, you know - for here, and that maybe we should stick to Twiight if we we want to argue. If you haven't read Twilight, well then, come up with some other controversial book. :) What do you all think?

I'm not into debating - every time I open my mouth I stick my foot in, edgewise - so whatever you do, I probably won't join, but I agree that debating religion over the internet is a bad idea, in general. If you do that, I won't join in either. I may join anyway because I can edit what I say here before I actually say it. :)

Oh, whoops, I spelled Twilight wrong in one of the places! :)

I agree, Lena, that on Chatterbox debating about things like religion should be . . . watched.  We all tend to get snappish on such topics.  I think that we should still debate, but less . . . strongly?  Like, I think saying "I don't believe in _" and someone replying "Why don't you believe in _?" and having a little argument about it is fine, but we tend to . . .

Quotes from me/us:
"You seem misinformed!"
"How can you believe that??"
"NO!!!  YOU DON'T GET IT!!"
"Then tell me this . . ."
"How can that not be true?!"
"THAT IS THE WAY IT IS!!"
. . . etc.  Do you get my drift? :)

I don't really enjoy debating that much either. One: Because I can only say one thing and then I feel like I keep repeating stuff and it sounds boring. Two: Because I'd rather be happy! :):):)

I like debating (I agree: that religion thread was getting much to heated), but TWILIGHT? Ugh...how 'bout some other book? I think Twilight's been discussed out....:):):):)

OK, how bout this.. do you thyink the drinking age should be lowered to 18 or not.

Reasons?

I'm doing this for my school's debate team this week. I'm oppostition (the age should not be lowered)

Yes. NOT that I plan on EVER drinking, but for those who do:

a) The longer you prevent a person from doing grownup things, the longer that person acts childishly. If we want kids to grow up (a favorite term of many grownups), they should be allowed to do things like that at the age that one legally becomes an adult.

b) The higher the drinking age, the more underage drinking.

c) It's a bit ridiculous to assume that people who can vote, and therefore assist in making a major decision for their country, should not be allowed to make a decision for themselves such as the choice to drink.

So if you can think of good counter points for those, you should be all set for your debate.

(Just out of interest, do you get to choose your teams, or does the coach pick? At my school, the coaches pick. *pouts*)

Eww... drinking's just... ewwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I tried a little bit of beer (my dad let my put a little on my tongue to see what it tastes like, and I do NOT know why people get addicted! It's just disgusting! I hate it. But anyways, I think that the drinking age should stay to over 21 because I just think that's a good age.... (??)

NOT that I would EVER care about the drinking age: my dad once let me try a little bit of his beer, like Maggie, and I'm allergic to alchohol. I mean, if I even SMELL wine I almost throw up!

Whenever I spell my dad's wine, I gag (though I'm not allergic to it). It smells so strong and tastes so bitter!!

I agree with all of what you said.  I don't want to EVER drink.

Me neither. I think wine is NASTY!!! Although I do think 18-year-olds should be allowed to, mostly for the reasons that (was it??? I can't check) Mary Jo said.

I agree with point C. I'm not going into the rest of it because I think it becomes an issue of personal morals. In general, effective arguments, methinks.
