Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Hey, y'all. I've

Hey, y'all. I've decided to start drifting back into the CB a little. I know, I've been one for all of 2 weeks, but it's harder to leave than you think. So, I need to know: do any of you homeschool in high school? I know Vida did, but does anyone else? I need a little info. I'm good in school for this year and next, but I will most likely have to go to a public high school, and I really don't want to. In high school, do you have to complete a certain amount of time, credits, or curriculum? I lie in MA. If anyone knows anything, it would be helpful. Thanks, bye.

First of all, I'm super glad that you've decided to come back! You are one of my most favorite CBers, and you make the CB better.

Second, I also live in MA, and from what I've heard, the high schools are of varying degree of quality. In the city I live in, the high school is supposed to be really, really good. I don't know about other cities.

I'm pretty good. I sprained my ankle a couple weeks ago though and have still been running and playing and hiking as I normally do, so it isn't really healing.

Hey! Welcome back! Sorry about your injury and your homeschool problems. At least it isn't your arm this time. Or was that someone else?

Hi, S.E.! Good to see you back! I've missed you.

Well, I just finished my first day of high school, and I'm still being homeschooled. Glad of it, too. From what I've heard about public schools, it makes me  thankful that I'm not in them, for the most part. Some of it sounds great, but most of it makes me either angry or sad for those people who have to go.

As for your questions about credits and all of that, I live in Texas, which is pretty relaxed about homeschooling. I only have to be taught math, reading, writing, spelling, and citizenship. The rest, my parents can decide, so long as they are actually teaching me. But I know in MA, the laws are waayyy more strict.

My state doesn't require time, credits, or curriculm, but my parents are having me take: algebra II, chemistry, American History I, American Literature I/Written Communication, French, Penmanship, and Art. (And co-op clases, which add Yearbook, an Outdoors Skills class, a community service class, Texas History, and a leadership class. And possibley an Ancestry class. Luckily, those don't start yet.) Plus karate.

In MA, I think that it depend on the district that you live in. It's pretty exact to what you have to learn, and it's pretty strict, too. MA is actually one of the seven states of America with the highest regulations for homeschooling. From Homeschooler's Defence Association, this quote explaining what 'high regulations' mean: "State with high regulation: State requires parents to send
notification or achievement test scores and/or professional evaluation,
plus other requirements (e.g. curriculum approval by the state, teacher
qualification of parents, or home visits by state officials)." There are a lot of box curriculums that you can use for high school but I don't know what you want to learn, or if your distict allows that. I think a lot of Internet digging would help with that question, and talking to other homeschoolers in your area (if there are any).

Good for you for looking about this on your own. I hope you can get to it eventually! If you have any questions, you can ask me and I won't mind answering them. Hope this helped!

Thanks a ton! That really helps a lot. I know that we have to learn orthography (spelling), reading, writing, English language and grammar, geography, math, drawing, music, history, duties of citizenship, health, physical education, and good behavior. Science isn't required, but I still want to do it.

My district doesn't have any info on homeschooling.

Well, I didn't technically do highschool this year but I took lots of high school classes. I think there are some requirements but not many, try and focus as much as you can on the subject you love most.
