Religion discussion

Religion discussion

So, there's a lot of us on CB, and we come from a wide variety of backgrounds. All across the US or even the world! Some of us are religious, and some aren't. Some are Christian, or Jewish, or Muslim, or Hindu... the list goes on and on. So, we can just discuss religion here! For some of us, it's a big part of our world -- for others, not as much. But... you can share if you want!

I personally am Catholic, which as Savvy pointed out is not the same as Christian. I do believe in Jesus and God and the Holy Spirit. I go to Church, I pray.

I believe in evolution. I believe that fantasy is not wrong or witchcraft or pagan -- it's just a story, it has values that any religion can teach. I believe that different religions can coexist, that if someone is agnostic (unsure, will not believe without proof) or atheist (firmly believes there is no God) or any other religion, that's their choice, they shouldn't be judged for it. I don't try to convert my friends. I share the stories of the Bible with them, but only as stories. I don't try to make them Catholic or Christian.

So, that's me... how about you? If you don't feel comfortable discussing, that's your choice and that's okay!

I admire you all.

My family is not religious at all. And I think you all know that.. But I believe in God.. Ish.

I never read the Bible. I don't know any Bible stories (Besides the one which features my own namesake: Daniel) and I don't go to Church. However, I pray to God. Sometimes when something bad happens to me, I blame God. Why did you have to create us? We wouldn't have to go through so much horror. I also read Uncle Tom's Cabin, a slightly religious story. I now almost firmly believe in God. I love science. And I still somehow know the Big Bang happened. But God is here. God is alive.

You all seem so admirable in your ways. I always thought that every family was like me, who didn't believe in God that much. But... It isn't.

My family doesn't really know about my thoughts. My Dad would probably displease of them. I also do. But now, my faith is in God. Even if I hate him sometimes, my faith is in God. Somebody, I could see why you think that. i won't argue against it. But God is real... God is faith... God is life...

Amen.

Danie, you should read Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. The story is about a girl in sixth grade who is trying to find what she believes in. That's only half the story, though. The other part is how she and her friends feel about growing up. But, still. I think you would find that her situation is similar. She does have religious parents, but one of them is Christian, and the other is Jewish. So, yeah. You might want to read the book.

A term that might be well used to describe you could be agnostic.

Danie, this is really weird, but I teared up reading that. I believe in God too, but not because I read the Bible with my Mom and Dad. He is out there, a real thing, a greater version of all the wonderful storybook deities. The way you wrote that was beyond admirable, and if I never meet you in this life I would hope to see you in heaven, *hugs*.

Thanks. It's just... Just how I think of him. He isn't just a person, a person who created us all. He is LIFE. HOPE. All those books that say what a wonderful person he is... I don't even think he IS a person. A person can't be that kind. He is something else. He is... I don't know. But I love him, even if sometimes I may lose my faith. I will keep on remembering... That he is watching.

(Gee, that sounds really creepy at that last sentence.... "Every step you take, Every breath you make, I'll be watching youuuu.")

Sting. It's Sting!

What? No one else listens to Sting?!

Ugh.

"He deals the cards to find the answer

The secret geometry of chance

The hidden law

Of a prooobable outcome

The numbers lead a dance.

I know that the spades

Are the swooords of a soldier

I know that the clubs are weapons of war

I know that diamonds

Mean money for this paaart

But that's not the shape of my heart!"

I just want to thank SC for pointing out that yes, Christian beliefs do definitely differ. I think that in this community, it's good to be able to discuss something that can be important to many of us. We just need to be polite and respect everyone. Thanks everyone for sharing.

I'm in a bit off an odd spot between "religion" and not. I don't really know what to believe, but I consider myself to be an atheist.

I think religions are a beautiful thing and should be treated with respect. I personally don't believe in any high beings, but I did once and still see evidence for it today. I don't mean to tell anyone what's right or wrong or what should be believed. It's possible to coexist with other religions and I would like to do my best to live in a world where everyone can exist together safely.

I am Jewish, though not as strict as Over the Rainbow seems to be. I really don't know my feelings about G-d. Is there an old bearded man watching us in the sky? I say no. Is there an unknown force that has some power? Maybe. But either way, I still celebrate the culture and religion of Judaism as I find my beliefs. I do think that science and religion can co-exist, but they both need to be taken with a grain of salt. For me, religion is something that is a mix of feelings and culture, and I enjoy both. (Still sick of Passover, though)

I'm really not that strict, not in my opinion. My family doesn't keep kosher, and we drive on Saturdays and handle money and press buttons and all that stuff you're not supposed to do. I go to a pluralistic Jewish school, and know a lot of people who are way stricter than I am. I don't know. Quite often it seems that my family is the least strictist of all my friends ( but most of them are from the school I mentoned, so maybe I don't have good references). We do seem to do more than other people. I don't know. Maybe I am strict. Anyway, glad to see another Jew out there!

Our family seems like yours, in that case. From the way you described it, it seemed that you were stricter than you say. I'm Reform, with both conservative and orthodox relatives, so I have a broad view of what strict is.

We don't really belong to any denomination, although we do go to a conservative synagogue. Most of my relatives ( and I have a lot of relatives) are orthodox. Sometimes I wish my family kept Shabbat a bit more, or kept kosher, but usualy I am pretty fine with how we are.

Personally, I think that some of the Bible stories are kinda violent...

That's the thing. The Bible is not a fairy tale. I beleive itt's a true account of real events. It doesn't always have a happy ending. People die. People suffer. People sin. And that's why Jesus was sent into the world. To forgive us. To save us. To give us hope. But yeah, some are pretty violent.
