Chatterbox: Down to Earth
Hi! I'm new
Hi! I'm new here! I'm not good at starting conversations, so . . . maybe some help would be nice. I mean, I might leave the Chatterbox, I don't know. I just have to see how friendly everyone is.

Hi, Moss! You're writing a book, too? Cool! So am I! I'm writing a fantasy about this world where there are giant birds. This really depressed girl named Cara finds a portal into thia world. What's your book about?
(June 9, 2014 - 11:23 am)
My book is about this girl, Gwen Blackwell, who realizes the world she lives in is a lie, a real Illusion. And that she, even though she doesn't remember it, was sent here to Earth to make the Illusion and protect the normal lives of people and world as we know it from falling apart. I'll explain more a bit later but I have to go to bed...
(June 9, 2014 - 8:09 pm)
That is SO cool! This is the first time I've written a book, so my idea isn't as good as yours. Do you think you could show me an excerpt of your book?
(June 10, 2014 - 11:58 am)
Sure, I'll post my excerpt from Camp NaNoWriMo. Prepare for the longness, guys: (Also, Admins, this is from Camp NaNo, so will this go through?) And, I'm still editing it so this is a draft, so yeah. Prepare for sorta confusion and mistakes. I'll try to edit it some more but, you know, finals. Why do I still have school until the 28th ughhh.
"Keep up, little fox," a kind voice said to her. Gwen looked up at a woman and teetered towards her. She reached for a hand to hold and a warm hand held hers within a few moments. She looked up at the woman and saw that the woman appeared to be her, staring at her in a mirror, only older and with wavy auburn hair instead of Gwen's frizzy red. Her skin was pale too and she wore what appeared to be white robes that were cut. Probably to make it more suitable for walking. The only other features that threw her off were the dark circles under her eyes. She could tell the woman had been working on something very hard, but on what she didn't know.
"Where are we going?" she asked her with eyes filled with wonder.
"Somewhere far from here, little fox." The woman turned around to take it. The scene behind them. A burnt city lay behind them, and mysteriously red tinted sand rained from the sky onto the city.
"What happened to the city?" Gwen asked, pointing at the ruins.
"There was an invasion so large that even we Frays couldn't stop. And it was all because we broke a promise long ago. We couldn't keep up with the promise anymore."
"Why not? You can't break promises." Gwen looked into the woman's familiar bright green eyes. She expected them to be filled with hope and determination, but instead she saw concern and fear.
"You only break promises when they don't work anymore. And you're right, you don't break them any other time. This was one of the occasions where you could."
Gwen decided not to ask what type of promise that was. She felt like she was pushing and prodding her with so many questions on someone so tired and worried. They stayed silent for awhile, continuing walking and walking.
"We'll be stopping soon, little fox," she whispered in her ear before Gwen could ask. "The shuttle is nearby from what I remember." A flash of light flickered not too far away. It was only then that Gwen realized she had many cuts on her face and perspiration building up on her forehead.
"There, we'll be all right," the woman said. For once she sounded like a huge burden had been taken off her shoulders. She started to pick up the pace, and Gwen struggled to catch up while holding her hand.
After a few minutes, they approached the shuttle the woman had talked about. It was a reddish-orange color and when she put her hand to it, it felt rusted. Smoke was coming out of the pipe from the tail of the shuttle. It shrouded the few silver-lined trees surrounding it. It mesmerized me for a moment, the smoke mixed with the orange glow of the sky's sunset.
The woman's eyes, however, widened with fear and a hint of surprise at the sight of the smoke. "The engines might be heating up. That's not a good thing, little fox," she said, stroking the shuttle's head cap. When she took her hand away, Gwen could see the smudged words of 'Phoenix 003'.
She sat down on the ground, leaning her back on the shuttle. "Little fox, little fox . . . ," she muttered over and over, shaking her head. "I thought we'd be safe. I thought this wouldn't happen." The woman sighed. The thought struck me that I had been calling her a woman and not anyone I knew. A name came to me. Mother, mother fox. Since I was her little fox, she would be my mother fox in this wasteland.
Finally, Mother got up and brushed off the dirt on her cut robes. "Might as well try and get it to work." Determination replaced her worry. Mother pulled open the Phoenix 003 doors and inside revealed a blinking control pad and cushioned tan seats. "Now let's see what that problem is. . . ."
She inspected the control panel, and when she found nothing wrong there, she searched underneath it. Again, nothing. Mother decided to search underneath the shuttle instead. Carefully, she opened the engine hatch while on her back.
"Oh, I see. The engine malfunctioned when it came up to the surface. It was originally down there--" she pointed to the ground. "--underground for, say, millennia in Earth years." Mother touched the rusted surface. "No wonder it's rusty! We'll have to make do. No time to clean it up." Mother turned around to check something. Curious, I turned around too. In the distance, I saw a red-orange dot growing faster and faster. She headed to the control panel inside the Phoenix 003. "We better get moving, little fox, or else things will get worse for us. Fast." She pushed in some buttons and typed a few words on a holographic screen.
"Come inside!" Mother said when I stood there, thinking. She patted the passenger seat next to her. All of a sudden the shuttle seemed huge for Gwen. She needed to get up into the shuttle with Mother's help.
"There we go," she said when Gwen got aboard. She typed some more codes onto the holographic screen.
"Ready for an adventure?" Mother asked her. She nodded excitedly. "Then let's get going!"
She pulled back the controller wheel that had launched itself. "Hold on to your seat! This isn't like our regular travel back at home!"
So Gwen tried to hold on to the leather cushioned seat as hard as she could. She squinted her eyes shut. "I'm ready."
"So am I, little fox, Mother said as she pushed down something on the ground: a gas pedal. Gwen started to feel a sensation go up through her body unlike any other. It was a tingling sensation mixed with a vibration and almost humming sound in her ears.
She couldn't tell how long it was, even though it felt pretty long. Eventually, it stopped and she opened up her eyes. The head cap had been unlocked and she could now see in front of her through a window. Stars from other galaxies shone in millions of different directions. Gwen couldn't help but say, "Wow."
"Look behind you," Mother whispered, though there was no reason to. Gwen did. There were a few stars- a constellation- that was shaped like a lyre.
"That's our constellation- Lyra. I named your sister after it," she said. The. She grew a pained look. "Lyra doesn't even know we're alive... and I couldn't bring her since it was already too late." Gwen knew she felt guilty by the silence that followed. She didn't know what to say in return.
"So, where are we going?" she repeated.
"Like I told you, Autumn leaf," Mother said, "somewhere far, far away from home. Earth."
Gwen faintly remembered stories about it. A small, oxygen - planet that was mostly blue because of the oceans. She also remembered there were green masses- land. She wondered what Earth would be like. As she peered outside the window, she remembered Old Earth's whales and fish in the seas. Gwen felt like they were underwater and wished there were some right now that she could see.
Staring off into the distance, she saw a small spark from one of the stars. It grew larger quite quickly, and Gwen could have sworn she heard a whale's cry. The spark got closer and closer and pretty soon it was a few feet behind the Phoenix 003. From up close, Gwen saw that the spark wasn't actually a spark, but a burning nebula. To her, it looked like an orange cloud with stars inside it. And from a certain angle, it looked like an Old Earth humpback whale. Gwen knew she wasn't imagining it. She poked Mother to get her attention on the nebula whale.
"What is it?" Mother asked, confused. Her eyes moved up from her and to the window nearest to Gwen. "Oh my-" Her eyes widened. "How is this possible?"
Neither of them were sure how as they stared at the nebula flying past them. Thankfully, the shuttle had its protection shields up so it wasn't harmed. Long after it had flown past, the two of them both heard a cry- a whale's cry.
"I don't know how that happened, little fox. I thought that wasn't even possible. And anyway, here we were, sitting in our shuttle, watching it fly by." A small smile crept up her face. "The universe is so beautiful, isn't it?"
"It is, Mother fox. It is," Gwen replied and hugged her. The two were quiet for a long time, hugging and staring off into the stars. Eventually the hug broke apart and Mother said, "Better to get this old thing moving than sitting around, huh?"
She nodded happily to Mother. Amusement glinted in her eyes.
"The only reason we stopped is because we needed to let the shuttle settle down. It is quite old. In Earth years, like we always measure time, it was made in the late 2000s. Most were made in the 3000s and later."
Gwen silently thought to herself that the reason Mother was explaining all of this to her was because she needed someone to talk to. Even if she was rather young.
The two held an awkward silence for a bit and Gwen held out a hand to Mother. Her green eyes brightened when she saw Gwen's hand and grasped it. "We're in this together, Autumn leaf." She leaned on Gwen lightly, staring out the window and to the stars surrounding them. "We'll be at our new home soon."
Gwen sighed and her eyelids started to droop. She opened her mouth in a yawn, and the last thing she remembered before falling into a deep slumber were the thousands upon thousands of stars around them. And one of them wasn't twinkling like the rest.

@ Moss:
Hi again! Here's an excerpt from my book. Hope you like it!
Cara was breathing hard
now. A strange world named Rembell? Portals? Time and space collapsing? Royal
family? Then a thought occurred to her.
“If all portals are
blocked, how did I get here?”
The man was looking
hard at her now. “Legend has it that only one would be able to penetrate the
strong portal lock. That one is the Bird Tamer.”
“Bird Tamer?” Cara
repeated. “What’s that?”
“Legend has it that the
Bird Tamer would be able to stop the war between the four kingdoms once and for
all. Rembell is divided into four kingdoms.
“So,” began Cara. “I’m
the Bird Tamer?”
“Most likely.”
“And I’m supposed to
stop a war?” Cara raised her eyebrow.
The man raised one
eyebrow. “If you are the Bird Tamer, of course.”

@ Bookbug
Sounds cool! I'm curious if the Bird Tamer tames birds... ;) Sorry, I'm a bird nerd.
(June 14, 2014 - 1:15 pm)
@Moss
Kind of. There's this war going on between the four kingdoms. Some kingdoms are made up of giant, talking birds. They're all fighting because each one thinks they should have full control over the world.
By the way, I really like your book! I wouldn't be surprised if it gets published some day!
(June 15, 2014 - 5:50 pm)
I'm working on finishing it this summer and maybe self-publishing it on BookBaby or something like that. I think I can do it :D
(June 17, 2014 - 8:10 pm)
Cool! I want to publish a book, too. I don't think I'll publish my Bird Tamer book, but I do want to publish a different book. Have you ever heard of the book Swordbird? It was published by a thirteen year old girl.
(June 18, 2014 - 10:28 am)
Yeah, Nancy Yi Fan. I loved her books! I'm working hard to try to get up to that point sometime soon...
(June 18, 2014 - 4:12 pm)
Why hello, Bookbug! I'm Theo W, aka Lexi, aka Theo W. But mostly Theo W. (Because of my double psydonyms, I remain genderless.) How are you today? I'm quite swell, thank you. Welcome to the Chatterbox! How do you like it here so far? Good, I'm glad to hear it. Everyone has been nice, right? No one has declared war on you because of your need to conqure the world yet, right? No? I'm glad to hear it.
Did I pass the friendly test? No? I'm terribly sorry, I'm not that great at introducing myself to new people, but I try. I like books. Do you like books? I'd assume so because of your name, which suggests you are a bug that is also a book, a book on bugs, or someone who just really likes reading a lot and has come up with the name "Bookbug." I'm guessing the latter.
Again, welcome to the Chatterbox! People here talk about all sorts of things: writing, school, cricket, BOOKS (I believe that's a sell point), and a lot of other stuff. Part of the reason I personally always come back is because everyone is very friendly. I hope you enjoy it here and opt to stay.
(June 10, 2014 - 4:25 pm)
Hi, Bookbug! Welcome to the Chatterbox! I'm True, a fellow book insect. I love to read, and am just about always in the middle of a book. I also love to write, and am usually working on some sort of creative writing. I also like to do puzzles, daydream, surf the Internet, and knit. I'm a homeschooled seventh grader, and my favorite subject is currently French. I'm looking forward for school to be let out (we end this Thursday) and then . . . back to summer school. Oh, well. (My family is forced to do math, and we enjoy chess lessons. I'm also continuing my French.)
CB is one of my favorite places, and I hope that you like it an decide to stay. We're all really close here, like a family, and we love to have people join our little community. Hope to see you around!

Wait, Admins, was my excerpt able to go through by copying and pasting from Camp NaNo? If not, I'll just rewrite it.
Yes, it's here in the queue. I just haven't had time to review it yet, because it's so long. I'll do it soon, then you should find it posted.

Oh ok! Thanks :) I was just wondering. I need to review it myself because I think I need to edit it some more at some parts.

Hello, Bookbug! I am the Grand Person of Grandness. I also have lemmings. Here, take one home as a party favor.
I can't be on very much because I can only be on when Ruby has time for it (another dude her, long story) and he's busy being a workaholic. Darn you, man. Working through the summer will only make you old faster.
But when I am on, I feel the Chatterbox with egotistic pep and life! I am well aware that I am completely full of myself and I don't really care! I am well aware that that makes me a dispicable person! I still don't care! Ah, to be so narcissistic! Hahaha!
I am here for Comic Relief. You see, that was my purpose for being born. And as I can't remember otherwise, it might as well be true.
If you're looking for fun stuff to do on the Chatterbox, I highly recommend you join the Ski Lodge Murder Mystery. It's on Pudding's Place, under the title "Day 0". What is the murder mystey, you ask? Or you don't ask, but let's pretend you did anyway. The murder mystery is a silly game Ruby sometimes puts on here. Sign up, and it'll begin in about a month. Out of everyone who signs up, one person is a murderer. But who are they? And one person dies everyday, so you must figure out the murderer quickly. It may sound morbid, but it's actually comical. I would be very happy if you joined! I hope you'll enjoy it.
