Glasses

Does anyone, including the Admins, wear glasses? I used to wear them only when I read, but when I went to the eye doctor today, she told me that I'm going to need them all the time now! I really, really, REALLY hate wearing glasses. For some reason, I feel embarrassed to wear them in public. Any suggestions on what to do?

I've worn glasses for at least ten years. I got used to them quickly. It was so nice to see things clearly instead of all blurry! You should be able to get used to them, too, and your friends will get used to seeing you that way. Look around you. There are people with glasses everywhere.

I've never been interested in trying contact lenses. I think it would be so much trouble to have to put them on and take them out. With glasses, just grab and go.

Take a fashionable friend or relative with you to help pick out the frames.

I have crt, contacts you wear at night. It's SO helpful. Admin, it's not that much trouble. You can use a suction cup (Looks like a plunger!) to get it  out. But it's pretty easy to take it out and put it in once you get used to it. Although it gets annoying washing the contacts.

I had glasses too, and they were constantly slipping down and breaking. And it was annoying when I forgot them too. Glasses are good too though, and there's a lot of frames to choose from.

I have purple glasses! I have had them for almost 2 years now. They help a lot. Your friends would want to try them on. If someone calls you Four-eyes, IGNORE!!!

I've had glasses since I was three.  I generally don't find a problem with people asking about my glasses, but there are two things that bug me which you should be wary of:

1. Sometimes people will ask to try on your glasses.  Some will do this without asking and just take them off your face.

2. Whenever you take your glasses off, people will say "How many fingers am I holding up?"  Seriously!  I have really bad vision, but I can still see individual fingers.

I started wearing contacts recently (mostly for acting and sports) and I like them, but I still haven't gotten the knack of taking them out without practically scratching them out of my eye!

If someone tries to grab your glasses without asking, smack them. Seriously. It's not cool. Ask them if they go around trying to rip out people's hearing aides, too.

...I'm -4 diopters in both eyes + an astigmatism (that maps to about 20/500 on the 20/20 scale—basically, if someone with perfect vision stood 500 feet away from an object and I stood 20 feet away from it, we'd see it with roughly the same level of clarity). I'm not legally blind, but I cannot function without corrective lenses. So I have very strong feelings about people who try to take my glasses (+ the pair that I have right now fit my face very well, so there's a particular method to getting them off and people who try to do it are liable to hurt me in the process).

That said, it can be fun to swap glasses for a few seconds IF permission is asked first.

re: embarrassment: Get frames that fit and flatter your face. Google around for rules of thumb, if you want, and when you pick out the frames the most important thing to consider is (a) if they're able to accomodate your prescription (primarily a concern with really poor eyesight, which necessitates thicker lenses), and (b) if you like how they look and how they look on you. Don't wear glasses you think are ugly if the alternative is a nicer pair.

ALSO, tons and tons of people wear glasses—it's nothing to be ashamed about and being able to see is well worth it. Contacts are something to consider but remember that depending on what's wrong with your eyes, you might not get as much clarity with them (specifically if you have certain kinds of astigmatism, contacts are going to be not as sharp and a lot more expensive because they have to be custom-shaped according to your eye)

@gollum

Do you use your hands to get it out? For me I try to look straight ahead as best as I can (I get distraced WAY too easily :D)

I use my hands to remove contacts... is there a way to use your feet?

I just got glasses this year, and at first I was reluctant to wear them. But when I saw that I looked like the Tenth Doctor, I liked wearing them :) So far I only use them in school for seeing the board and movies.

I wear glasses! They are black and really match my eyes. I felt scared to wear them, too. But my friends think I look pretty in glasses, and glasses help you see clearer! Choose a few glasses you like, and then pick a pair that really suits you. I had fun choosing glasses. :)

I just found out that I can use the frames from my reading glasses for my new prescription, and they're purple too, Maggie! ;P

I've worn glasses since I was two. For everything. My mom says it was amazing that I learned my letters without glasses, and I didn't struggle. My eyesight stinks, but glasses help a lot.

P.S.- The worst part is taking a shower. I can't see.

I've been wearing glasses for the past two years. I tried to put it off forever and ever, but after everyone kept telling me I had to wear them, I gave in. I feel so ugly when I wear them, but besides that, it is nice having everything all sharp and clear.

I've had glasses for like three years. They have gold frames and are really round and apparently look like Harry Potter's. *raises eyebrows* They were weird and embarrassing at first, but now I hardly even notice. I have terrible eyesight without them.

Don't worry! Lots of people wear glasses, including me. I have these HUGE, cute "nerd" glasses and I get a lot of compliments! People think they're fake just to look cool, but they're real! Try those, and don't worry about anything people say! I guarantee you'll love them, because they help you see and "nerd glasses" are super adorable!

Good luck!

My friend has "nerd" glasses. They look much better on her than her old glasses, which were wire-rimmed.
