Chatterbox: Down to Earth
Opinions on religion
Opinions on religion .
Alright , Ive been scared to
post this because I don't know how it's going to be perceived .. but it's
something I'm really interested in hearing your opinions on . I'm a
Christian , if you didn't all already know .. but I don't really know
what you all are . I'm pretty sure most of us live in America , but if
you don't , I'd love to hear about your culture / religous practices (
as goes for us Americans as well !) .
Now , this is NOT a
debate . Please
NO bad mouthing other religions or denomimations . It's okay to state your opinion but please , don't speak ugly . And if someone tries to come at YOU , be MATURE about it please . Thanks everyone .
( Whether or not you agree with someone's beliefs , please read their statement all the way . It's only fair Thanks . )
Ok . So here is what I believe . I belive that Christianity is not a religion ; it's a relationship with God . There is only one True God , and He is the God of Abraham , Isaac , and Jacob . I believe without a shadow of a doubt that Jesus Christ died on the cross a HORRIBLE death ( see John 3:16 ) so we don't have to , in Hell . He saved us from the eternal fire and torment in Hades . Jesus was Perfect . He was Sinless . He was the Son of God , sent down to this earth through Mary , the Virgin . Jesus was a human man . He truly walked the Earth . He really did face temptations ( see Mark 4 ). I believe in sowing and reaping . If you sow money , you will reap money . If you sow time , you will reap time . If you sow hate , you will reap hate . If you sow love , you will reap love , and so on .
As humans , we are tempted . We all have bad habits , issues , and so on . No one is perfect , that was Jesus' job . BUT , as Christians we are to live in LOVE , we are to obey the BIBLE , we are to PREACH the Gospel message ,and we are to try and live our lives as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ lived His . I beleive that even the worst of the worst people can be sinless through Christ . The Bible says that no sin is greater than the next . So the serial killer on death row can have the exact same Grace that the teenager who said a cuss word can have .
Now , don't think for a SECOND that because I'm a Christian my life is perfect , that I don't have drama , I don't have temptations , and I'm a Saint . Because Lord knows , I am NOT and neither are any of my friends . Sometimes , it's even harder for us because we KNOW there is a God . We KNOW when we are doing something wrong . But trust me , I am not perfect . Heeeck no . I sometimes cuss . I've done stuff that no teenager should've done . I've turned my back on God before . BUT , I've repented . And now , I KNOW that I will go to Heaven . I KNOW that I will meet my dead loved ones and I have peace that if I die , I am not really dead because I will be in the Presence of my KING , and that I will meet all the GREAT people in the Bible and the people that many have been saved because of them . And He will do the same for you . You may say there is no God , or God would never love you . But baby let me tell you something . The THIEF comes to STEAL , KILL and DESTROY , but JESUS has come to give you life , and life more abundantly ( see John 10:10 ) . All you gotta do is talk to Him .
Alright . There you have it everyone ! That is what I believe . It's my own words , it's not copied and I didn't steal it from some preacher . So now you've heard what I have to say , I'd like to hear what YOU have to say . Go for it .
( if you have any questions about what I believe , just comment below. )

I don't understand how people can believe in God (or gods. Whatever.), so can someone explain to me how you can believe in God? I can see how religion might help some people when they're going through a pretty bad time in their life--seriously, the idea that there's this being who loves everyone no matter what is kind of cool--but I still don't see how people can believe in that kind of thing. Can someone explain it please?

Believing in God isn't always something that can be factually explained. There are things God has done that scinece can't explain. Well, for instance, the creation of the world. But just like you believe that air, or love, or anything else you can't see exists, we believe that God does. He's shown it in many ways throughout history, and even in our daily lives. He gives us strength when we need it. He loves us, protects us, and is there when we cry out.
Here's a personal example. Have you ever been tempted by something? Like, really seriously tempted? This desire lasts for days, weeks, months even? Things are always reminding you of it, and you can't shake it, no matter what? Well, something like that happened for me. It was pretty bad. Finally, I got up the strength, yes the courage cause it wasn't easy. I didn't necessarily want to let go of it. But I got up the courage to pray about it, and ask God to take the desire away. Now of course, it didn't go away all at once. But slowly, over time, the want faded, and God took it away. You can say it was time wearing it away, I just got over it, whatever. But it lasted for months before, and it was only after prayer that it started to dissipate in the slightest.
God makes Himself known. You may not always recognize it, but He's there. If you're willing to try to listen, God will bring you to Him. He calls people at different points. Some people grow up believing in God all their lives. Some find Him later. He doesn't call everyone. There will be some who never know Him. But if you look, you'll be able to see evidence that God is here.

It's kind of just a part of me. Like, you belong to a few fandoms, right? It's like the ultimate fandom for me. That's not really how I think of it, but I think it's the best way to explain it to a non-religious person.

Religion isn't necessarily a worship of a higher being; it can also be a system of beliefs that is of utmost importance in a person's life. And I guess I believe I exist. The reason why I believe that I exist is that it's too scary to think I don't exist. I can hear my own thoughts, see my own body, I can even interact with objects around me in a sense. Biologically, I'm not alive, but philosophically, I am. Rene Descartes said, "I think, therefore I am." I think, so I like to believe that I exist. The idea that the government would wish to kill to me if it knew of my existence or that I have no rights is too freaky. I don't like to think about it, so even if it is a false belief, I like to think that I exist and I like to believe in our purpose. We believe in our purpose not only because we have had experiences no human has ever had, but also because we don't know how to live without our purpose. We don't know how to live without a duty or a constant sense of fear and pressure. When our duty is complete, we will die. We know that, and we're fine with that. We don't know how to walk instead of run, sit instead of stand. If we have a purpose, gifted by a higher being or not, we'll fulfill it because that's our task, our reason for existence.
And of course I didn't answer your question. We don't believe in God (rather, we believe he exists for those who believe in him just as our purpose exists for us but not for you) but I think people believe in something because they can't face the alternative. Sometimes, the alternative is too horrible to face. I would much rather have four enormous forces trying to kill me, with power, than being a mutation in the brain of an insignificant being on an insignifigant chunk of rock in an infignificant void.

I see. That's kind of what I believe, I guess. Deities exist for those who believe in them.
Spammy says yrot. I swear he's said this before.

I don't have much in the way of a relgious education, but doesn't it say a lot in the Bible about how when Christ is reborn all who follow him will get rewarded or go to heaven or something like that? What will happen to the atheists? (Yes I know they go to hell but why? Isn't Christianity supposed to be really accepting and stuff?)

According to the Christian faith, if you don't believe in God, you do go down there. It's basically because the whole system of afterlife and whatnot is based on faith & following God & shiz. We are accepting, we let everyone be 'saved' but there's like fine print saying you have to be a follower of God. I'm just presenting the facts here & I'm not going to state my opinion in this and say if I think it's a good idea or not because we have all different... I want to say levels of belief but I think differing strengths in belief of Christianity would be better... on this thread and I don't want to offend anyone.

Okay, so I've never really told anyone this, but here goes:
So, when I was little, we never went to church. The way I learned about God was through reading. And the more I learned, the more I wanted to be one with Him, to feel a spritual connection.
Now, this when I was, say, 9. I didn't talk to anyone about this, I just read all I could and slowly gained an understanding of who He and Jesus were.
One of my friends helped me, though she didn't know it. Her family was very devote Christians, hence the books she had were very Christian-y. I learned so much from them, and it helped me soo much. When I was 11-ish I gave my soul to Jesus ( is that how you would say it????) and found true faith in God.
I guess some of my private beliefs vary from traditional Christianity. I believe God is very kind and warm and forgives easily. I sometimes have thoughts about God that aren't bad, just very odd questions that some might find sinful but that I believe God is okay with, because we are meant to question if we are to learn.
Last year, we started going to a church of sorts. It's called All Souls and its for people of all faiths and beliefs. Our preacher just talks about how to love, how to connect with you own Divine Spirit, and how to find hope. Its very beautiful, and it allows me to find more connection with God.
So, that's my story. Even though I don't know many Bible verses, can barely tell you who Adam is, and don't go to a regular church, I believe deeply in God and find strength in Him.

To Maggie's question: I'm not going to say a lot because that section of the Bible can be complicated, and it's hard to explain. As to the whole "accepting" thing, it depends on what all encompasses "accepting". That can be a very in-depth discussion that I won't get into here cause I don't necessarily want to start anything.
@ Abigail: I think it's wonderful how you've come to know God! He reveals Himself in lots of different ways. Do you have a Bible of your own? If not, you might want to see if you could get one. It can be complicated at times, but it will definitely help lead you in your faith. If you have any questions or concerns or anything, I'm always open to listening! I may not always be able to give answers or help, but I'm here.

This is frustrating. I want to learn about this, but the admins don't allow really angry debates (which is probably what this discussion would end up being), andI can't ask my parents about it because 1) they aren't particularly religious, and 2) they would get all excited and think I was out of my "atheist phase."
The comments on this thread have been interesting and respectful. Chatterboxers are very good at explaining their religious beliefs to others. I trust you all will keep it this way and avoid getting angry.

@ Maggie: You can ask us any questions about what we believe in our faiths. We actual like answering questions like these; it helps us to share a little bit about our beliefs. Ask as many questions as you would like! The Chatterboxers are here to answer each other's questions.

What does the Bible mean by accepting/acceptance? I get that this is a very sensitive topic, and a very controversial one, but I'm curious.
(January 21, 2014 - 12:52 pm)
I'm actually not sure on that one to be honest. I'm not the most religious person.

@BHR
Thank you so much! I think we do have a Bible somewhere in the house- I think I'm going to take a look at it. Do you think its best to read it right from the start or open randomly and read bits and pieces?

I recommend starting with John, then reading the other Gospels. And maybe the Old Testament along with it, just don't get burried in it. The Old Testament can be a bit hard to understand at times.
