1. Medieval European-like: This is the setting of most fairy tales we know--kings, queens, knights, castles . . .
2. Original Fantasy Land: This is harder to do, because the land will be less familiar to readers--a land that's not like a real place or time period on Earth--but it can be lots of fun! Anything becomes possible, but we'd have to work all the harder at developing the world.
3. Classical World: How about a story in a fantasy Greece or Rome in the time of the gods, goddesses, and monsters like the Hydra, the Cyclops, or the Chimaera?
4. Not-So-Distant Past: What about a story in the era of carriages, lanterns, top hats, and maybe a dirigible or two?
5. Urban Fantasy: Would you like to see a story set in the modern world, but with fantasy elements?
6. Future: Maybe you enjoy future settings, when the world is a little or a lot different from the way it is today. If you choose this option, then try to decide on near future or far-distant future.
Others: Do you have a strong feeling about some other setting that isn't mentioned here? Let us hear about it!

The gnarled, twisted trunks of the trees loomed ominously, making me feel small. The elf world was nothing like the fairy world, where all the trees sprouted flowers and were only clustered in small groups. I folded my wings into the deep crevice of my back before slipping on my cloak.
"Grandma! it's Anna!" I called, but voice just echoed back at me. I was alone. And for the first time in forever I hated it.

I usually prefer Original Fantasy Land, because it expresses the author's style of writing and creativity openly. I am an author myself, and am writing a story in a world I completely made up.
