The guests will be arriving soon, so I do a quick sweep of the area to make sure that everything's in place and there aren't any tripping hazards (Nix and Fir had been playing 'Home Alone' earlier, in which they play Kevin and Vanadium unwittingly plays the burglars and keeps tripping over conveniently placed coils of holiday lights). 

There's a pair of banquet tables near the entrance to the ballroom, piled with all sorts of treats, but with room for anything the guests might bring. At the back of the ballroom is the dj booth, which Fir has somehow found themselves in charge of, and will be playing a selection of holiday and wintry songs. The center of the room is reserved for dancing, and the perimeter of the room is scattered with round tables with ice blue tableclothes and all sorts of festive decorations. 

Satisfied that everything's in order, I take my place near the entrance to greet the guests as they arrive.

+I hold an extra large bag of both small and big marshmallows in my arms as I step through the snow, feeling it softly crunching underneath. The other AEs are besides me, along with Moon Wolf, who is leading the way. I glance over at Lyra, who seems extremely excited, which is pretty out of the ordinary. Unless, of course, she's meeting with Eri.+

+We walk through the door, seeing the amazingly decorated ballroom, with Orion already eyeing for possible chaos opportunities such as Christmas light tripping hazards and Lyra likely looking for Eri. Pangolin is there to greet us. "Hey, Pangolin!" Moon Wolf calls.+

|I realize that I'm actually the first of our group as the ballroom comes in sight. Am I that desparate to see Lyra? Usually Amethyst, as the All-Important CBer, takes control, but this time I was the one who got us out of the house early and hurried us all the way here. No one else is in sight, though light is spilling out onto the snow; I hope that we aren't too early. I really want to see Lyra again, talk to her and feel something in me light up when she smiles.|

|"Heads up!" a voice calls behind me, and something frosty and unstable hits the back of my neck. I whirl around. Alde is looking innocent and brushing snow off his hands, looking even better than usual in the beanie that he added to his outfit at the last moment (because Amethyst and Ibis insisted - we all know who really bosses the household). On the other hand, I'm the one who landed the most gorgeous, most amazing girlfriend of all time - I'm still not sure how I managed to hit it so lucky.|

|I heave a handful of snow at him in return, but he ducks, laughing. Argh. Sometime tonight I'll have a proper snowball fight with him.|

|Before either of us can say anything, Agate gives us A Look. "Stop it, kids," she says. "Let's just go in, all right?" She heads for the doorway, and I follow her, everyone else walking through the snow behind us. Agate pushes open the door, and I get an impression of some sort of perfect fairyland ballroom, decked out with winter charm and just begging for tons of people to have tons of fun; the second thing I see is Lyra, even more perfect than the room. (Rather obviously.)|

|"Lyra!" I call, hurrying over to her and leaving the others to say hello to everyone else. "Hey. It's great to see you again."|

Kaspar, Poinsettia, and I walk up to the ballroom entrance. The familiar thrill of excitement runs through me - if there's one thing I love, it's a party! It's a shame Ariella couldn't come, she loves parties too, but she went shopping earlier and still hasn't come back... perhaps she met Rumi in the store? Anyway, we're here, and it's wonderful. pangolin is near the entrance, greeting the guests, and Poinsettia says hi. My gaze is caught by the ballroom - banquet tables and smaller tables with ice-blue tablecloths. It looks stunning. Kaspar's voice breaks into my thoughts. "Um, is Arum here?" he inquires anxiously.

Cleo

:Of course, we're almost late. These people have no sense of punctuality. I march ahead, determined not to look at Jamison—the sole reason for our tardiness.

Suddenly, something cold and wet slams into the back of my tank top. A gasp escapes me as icy tendrils snake down my spine. "Jamison!" I yell, whirling around to glare at him.

"Sucks to suck!" he calls back with a smug grin, casually tossing another snowball up and down in his hand.

I knew I should’ve worn a coat. Or at least mittens, so I could pelt him back. My glare sharpens into daggers, and if looks could kill, Jamison would already be rolling in his grave.

Celestial, who had the intelligence to wear gloves, springs to my defense with a snowball of her own. Her throw grazes his arm, leaving only a light dusting of snow.

“Celestial,” I snort, trying not to roll my eyes. “I could do so much better.” It’s true. My aim is deadly—whether with snowballs, dodgeballs, or, hypothetically speaking, throwing knives. (Just kidding. About the knives. Mostly.)

If I had thrown it, the snowball would’ve smacked him square between the eyes, sending icy shards sliding down his shirt. He’d be halfway to hypothermia before he could even blink.

“Guys, chill,” Lorelai interjects, her voice dripping with exaggerated patience. “Can we declare a truce for, like, three minutes? We wouldn’t want Jamison showing up to the party looking like a sad little popsicle, would we?”

“Fine,” I mutter, kicking at a clump of slush as I pick up my pace. “But this isn’t over.” I stomp ahead, leaving the group trailing behind me.

The first thing I notice when I stride into the ballroom is pangolin doing some last-minute tidying. “Wassup!” I call out, relieved to see someone who isn’t Jamison.

Then I spot it.

A waffle-making station.

Oh, the possibilities. The sweet, sticky vengeance I could exact with one swing of that iron. My fingers itch at the thought of smashing it right into Jamison’s piggy little face. The imagery is almost enough to make me smile—almost:
