Chatterbox: Chirp at Cricket

School project survey

Hiii y’all! This is a survey I created for a school project. If y’all would kindly fill it out, it’d be greatly appreciated <333

How can we normalize representation of

minorities without centering the story around

the rep?

Thank you for taking this survey! I am going to use the results of this to plan a story with characters that’s as good as I can get to match what the people want.

In regards to media, I mainly mean stories (books, TV, movies, podcasts, etc). Rep includes disabilities, body types, ethnicity, traumas, identities, etc.

I am not making the questions required, however, please answer as many as you can in as much detail as

possible. Thank you <3

Representing Diversity

General questions (not about specific groups, but an overview)

  1. First of all, do you prefer stories centering around representation ("rep") or having rep woven into the story?

    1. Centering around rep

    2. Rep woven in

    3. Other:

  2. What do you think media is doing now rep-wise, and do you think it's good/working? Why?

  1. What do you think is an appropriate amount of diversity for any given story/media, and are there any reasons it should vary?

  1. Should writers/people creating/producing media go into the project thinking about plot or rep first?

    1. Plot

    2. Rep

    3. Other:

  2. How do you think rep should be subtly woven in? What do you want to see? (eg: scars, symptoms, etc)

  1. Is the current representation in media playing too much into stereotypes?

    1. Strongly disagree

    2. Disagree

    3. Neutral

    4. Agree

    5. Strongly agree

  2. Adding onto the previous question, explain your answer.

  1. Do you think there is accurate representation in media today?

    1. Yes

    2. No

    3. Other:

  2. About the previous question: Why?

  1. What are some of your pet peeves when it comes to portraying diversity/rep in media (being as specific as possible is greatly appreciated)?

  1. How far should people go in regards to representation?

Specific groups

  1. What groups do you think have the best/most rep?

  1. What groups do you think media has enough rep of?

  1. What groups do you think media lacks in rep of? (Doesn't mean what you want to see, but in general)

  1. What groups do you want to see more of in media?

  1. In your opinion, which has more rep (disability version)

    1. Invisible/Neuro (eg: ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, etc)

    2. Physical (eg: Cerebral Palsy, ambulatory wheelchair users, etc)

    3. Other:

  2. Thinking about a minority group as a whole, there are typically subsets of that group (eg: LGBTQIAP2-S+ has many identities, neurodiversity has a wide variety, etc). What specific subset(s) do you think needs more recognition in media?

Stories

  1. What types of stories/plots do you see a lot of (Could be in stories that have representation like this, but not necessarily)?

  1. What types of stories/plots do you want to see more of (Could be for stories that have good rep, but not necessarily)?

Examples

  1. Examples of books/movies/TV/podcasts/other media with not-so-great rep and why? (You can spoil the story, I don't mind)

  1. 21. Examples of books/movies/TV/podcasts/other media with good rep and why? (You can spoil the story, I don't mind)

Thank you!!!

(most of this post is directed to LE, not Bobcat, and it's not intended to make anyone angry or unhappy. There's just a couple of things that need to be said.)

It does seem to me like anon is right. It's Thanksgiving, this whole situation has been sorted out, and it's time to move on. Thank you, @anon, for intervening :)

Quite truly, the things I said cannot be interpreted to mean what you thought they said. Bobcat argues that many people might interpret them in a negative way, but that's probably not true. Reasons:

-everyone else on this thread seems to have been fine with them

-the admins approved every single post; if they'd thought anything in there was hurtful, they would've censored the post immediately. The admins are educated, intelligent adults, and their judgment is trustworthy. That's why this place is so kind and caring - anything mean or untrue is just not allowed to show up.

-According to my teachers, who are qualified judges, my writing is really clear. I was educated from the time I was little using the IB system, by a variety of well-educated and qualified people - my main teacher graduated from one of the finest high schools in the world. But because of my sophisticated education, my posts are generally expressed in a more sophisticated style. So to understand them, you have to read carefully. For example, "diversity initiatives push people to think about their identities" is not the same thing as "it's egotistical to want diversity," especially since I did stipulate that it's not just diversity that's responsible for the identity trend in the media.

It's totally fine that you misunderstood. It's normal and natural to misinterpret things, especially when dealing with such a sensitive topic. But it should be very clear that it's not my fault. I did not totally mess up all hope of ever communicating my point.

Finally, @Admin, do you think it would be a good idea to shut down this whole discussion (not the thread, just this particular conversation)? I tried really hard to keep it civil and interesting, because there's nothing like enlightened discourse, but it seems like it's getting out of hand, having already hurt my feelings and probably other people's too. And my sincere apologies for you having to deal with this over Thanksgiving. Sending you (and everyone else) tons of good wishes and happy Thanksgivings!! Hope you all have a wonderful amazing day :)

Yes, let's end this discussion. I think enough has been said.

Admins, I think this thread has gone too far. Is it possible for you to close it down? At least for the holiday weekend? No hate to Rainbow, but honestly this thread has hurt people. Me included. I know those who posted here mean no harm, but that doesn't make it hurt any less.

I'd also like to address how you- the admins- are not censoring this. I think kids are being hurt. I know you are trying to protect us, but honestly it's hurting more than it's helping. This used to be my safe place, I realized I was queer here. Now I'm scared to check it. I don't want to drift away, I love this place. But there are faults.

Admins do not intend to post anytinig that is hurtful to others. I'm sorry you've found some comments hurtful. This thread was intended to be an open survey discussion. If you can specify to me what you find hurtful (exact words at beginning of the comment, hurtful comments, who it's from, and what page it's on, I'll have another look. And I do suggest that you just don't log on to any thread you find upsetting. I have also said, twice, that enough has been said on this topic and I most likely will not take the time to review and post further long comments on this topic.

i'm going to say two things for now while working on a longer comment:  it took a lot of effort to say things in the least potentially offensive way possible, because frankly, it seems like anything will be taken that way, in this context. Also, LE, i'm really sorry.

And Writing, I've always looked up to you.

BB, Writing was not referring to anything you said. And I'm done reviewing long, specific comments on this thread.

...i'm aware Writing probably wasn't, but i was just making sure i hadn't said anything that had compounded the issue. i don't understand why you had to take that part out, especially considering now it sounds like i was disagreeing with them, which i was not.

yeah, definitely! You were super careful to be inoffensive, and that's one of the things that makes it a pleasure to have conversations with you :) Ultimately, it doesn't matter if our perspectives are different, especially since you expressed yours considerately. That's why my final post really wasn't directed to you.

And yes, none of this was Rainbow's fault! Or mine or yours, but especially not Rainbow's.

And finally, I won't be reading any more posts that are directed to me on this thread, or that are referring to this conversation, for quite a while. Final school projects are looming up and really one should get busy on them and just do life, instead of rehashing something that's all done and dusted. So please don't @ me or anything, because I won't be reading it. G'bye :)

just to explain why this doesn't make any sense or mean anything anymore, it got edited. i was basically saying "sorry LE for getting called out specifically", if that will go through.

oh also, Rainbow, please don't feel bad for making this thread, and i'm sorry it got taken over! i've enjoyed reading all the comment about the initial purpose. i cannot say that about the rest of them, i'm afraid. but you didn't do anything wrong.

yes, in full agreement w/bb, rainbow this is an interesting thread and i do somewhat regret the discourse and whatnot distracting from such a cool thread!!! it's definitely not your fault that this happened!
