CB Updates -- We Need Your Help!
Hey Chatterbox, it’s the admins. After the CB went down earlier this year, we’ve been working with the Webmaster to get the CB a shiny new upgrade. We’re in the early stages of info gathering right now, and we need your help!
Please share in the comments anything that you hope for in a new version of the CB. You can suggest brand-new features, but also include anything you really would like to stay the same. We want to consider all possibilities (even if we can't use all of your wonderful ideas) to create the best possible place for you! Comment by May 31st any new (or old!) things you might like in a fresh CB.
We can’t wait to hear from you.
--Admins
PS. An updated CB does not mean an update to our guidelines, so please know that suggestions that explicitly go against the guidelines will not be considered.

Ooh, make a new algorithm where the order of threads is by a "significance" equation: C/T or comments/time since last posted times time since posted originally
(April 30, 2024 - 2:29 pm)
Ooh, ability to post in different fonts?
(April 30, 2024 - 2:30 pm)
Ooh, maybe when you create a new post, it doesn't go back to cricketmagkids.com (the cricket home page) but just back to cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox (the chatterbox home page).
Maybe also a CB app on the App Store and Google Play to provide better support for mobile?

pronouns box could be cool. i dunno, i kind of like the older aesthetic, but changes might be cool too.

ooh, thanks so much for doing an update, @Admins and Webmaster, and especially for consulting us!! :) I do have some ideas~
-there's a glitch in the Kyngdom RP Board - there's no way to organize the threads by date, so if a thread gets its first post and goes to the back pages, you have to search for a long time in order to find it and top it... I've tried the "submitted by" button, but it doesn't work.
-perhaps a way to organize threads according to the CBer who made them? that way you could easily find all the threads you've ever made, should you want to look back at them for nostalgic purposes, and it might also make it easier to find threads in general
-perhaps a search bar - again, so that it's easier to find threads
-a way to upload multiple photos in one post
-being able to top an old thread with just one comment
-if you click on the Old Cricket's Library button it says you need to install the latest version of the Flash Player to view it; perhaps that could be changed?
-sometimes if a thread title is just a word or two, it ends up having a "&nbs" in it (the Math Theory SI in CaC is an example). I find this somewhat irritating, of course it's just a small glitch but it would be rather nice if it were fixed :)
-being able to upload videos would be amazing!!
My most important request, though, is please keep the appearance the same! I know I'm way too sentimental about this, but I just love the colors and the fonts and the whole aesthetic and arrangement of it all - it's so simple, functional, elegant. And it has a lot of meaning for me, too, because so much in the world is always changing, but this website has stayed just the same for years, and whenever I sit down at the computer and see the same familiar Down to Earth, or Chirp at Cricket, it's reassuring. Like it's a safe, steady space that will always be as I remember it. I guess that would apply actually to most of the CB - I can't think of anything, aside from what I already mentioned, that should be changed. Other changes might sort of change the whole vibe and culture of this place... Even the things that have evolved a bit, like the purposes of some of the sections (TM, for instance), are still an integral part of CB culture, I think. Or like having to click "submitted by" twice to find threads that have gone to the back pages, or having to put pronouns in age boxes... all those small quirky things that I love about this website and that make it so special :)
Also I'm not really sure that making accounts or profiles would be a good idea? Impersonation isn't really much of a problem (knock on wood) and it's so nice how the CB is just open to everyone. Plus I've already got so many passwords for other things, like email and accounts in general, that I need to remember and keep straight, and I may need to get more in the future; I might find it difficult to deal with another one lol. As for profiles... well, I think profiles would give the CB more of a typical social-media, impersonal feeling, and less of a genuine community vibe, oddly enough. Maybe it's because it's different if you access info about someone through a profile, instead of reading all the things which that person has actually posted and gradually getting to know them through their own words and voice. Right now that's the only way to know who anybody is or what anybody is like, and it makes it seem more like a real community of people who truly know each other well. Also I can foresee there might be competition to make profiles "more interesting" or "cooler" than other people's profiles; I don't expect it would be dire, but it's something to consider.
So anyway, I'd love it if most things could be kept the same, because truly this website is one of the most attractive and unique, yet easy-to-use, that I've ever seen; but the possible changes I listed would definitely be much appreciated! Thanks again for doing this :)

oh wait I did just have another idea... maybe threads in the Inkwell, and possibly PP, could have titles in bold like the threads in BaB? Since they're often used to post pieces of writing, like ski lodges or solo writes, it would be kind of fun to be able to actually give them titles :) And it would be easier to find a particular piece of writing that way!
(April 30, 2024 - 3:03 pm)
Give everything titles instead of just the first few words of the post!

I have some ideas and I'm here to second a few of other people's ideas (might be back later with more as well)
- A "Main Street" section. I don't imagine CBers would be able to make new threads here, but it would include the existing threads that are regularly used and some others. Random Thoughts could be moved here, and the Admins Question thread could also be moved here. There could be a new thread called "New CBers" which would be where New CBers can introduce themselves, and a "check in/check out" thread for people to announce hiatuses. And a "Send Someone a Message" thread where people can @ each other with specific messages instead of having to create a whole separate thread every time we want someone's attention. And there could be an Ultimate Guide thread where old CBers can put stuff they think new CBers should know! This would also act as a part of the CB where Admins could also conveniently post announcements when needed. It'd be considered proper CB etiquette to check here regularly.
- A section where people can have chat threads with each other (these wouldn't be private or hidden and anyone can access them it's just so they don't clog up other parts of the CB), maybe called "Let's Chat" or something?
- I agree that Chirp at Cricket and This Month aren't used for their original purposes anymore. What if the This Month section was replaced with my "Main Street" idea above and there was a "Chirp at Cricket" thread where people can send messages to Cricket and his friends, and there was a "This Month" thread where people could talk about the magazine? Essentially just turning entire sections into threads. Chrip at Cricket could be renamed "Games and Fun" since it's mostly used for SIs and stuff.
- An option to delete or edit posts (ofc editing would send them back to you guys for review, it just saves the time of deleting and rewriting things on your end and makes things go smoother).
- Agree on the pronouns box thing. Great idea!
- Love the search box idea; that'd be super helpful!
- Maybe some small updates to Kyngdom's main page? Some info there is outdated (including the Story so Far) and there's no info about how Kyngdom is being rebooted, the ten year gap, ect., so newer CBers are still occasionally confused about this.
- I like the ideas about accounts although I understand this might be complicated. I wouldn't want to have to give personal info to make an account, just a username and password like Sine said. Gloomy's idea of a profile section, where people can put some info about themselves and we can find their threads, is cool! Oh and I'd definitely want a remember me feature if accounts were set up (on other websites I use, this feature is sometimes forgotten and logging in every time is really annoying!)
- A fandom section would be fun, so I'm agreeing with that idea as well!
- I do love the colors and general feel of this place already and don't think that needs to be changed :D
That's it for now; thank you!!

Maybe Art Posting and Ultamite Picturings Thread could go there too, in the Main Street I mean.
(April 30, 2024 - 5:28 pm)
I also love the colors of the CB, and so much about it that I would prefer to stay the same <3 One of the things I especially love about it is how different it is from mainstream social media, with the general format and the way you can't like or dislike a comment. I would really appreciate it if that could stay the same! And I agree with Poinsettia that accounts might not be the best idea, since it's so nice how open and easy the CB is to use, and it seems to add to the friendliness of the atmosphere.
Anyway, for changes, I'd also love a search bar/topping a thread with one comment/etc. Possibly it would be nice if the comments could have an option for underlining words as well as making them italic/bold? Basically, if a few of the glitches could be corrected, that would be great, but I'm realizing that I mostly just love the CB the way it is :) Thank you so much for doing this, though!!

OH OH OH!
I have an idea, maybe a section just for threads about AEs! So we could post parties there and it would be like a little home for AEs!!!! (Because we love them so much)
(April 30, 2024 - 5:25 pm)
Maybe make Kyngdom threads easier to find to top? And thread titles like bab has except for all of them?
(April 30, 2024 - 5:25 pm)
I like a lot of the ideas that CBers mentioned! I especially think Periwinkle did a great job of putting the ideas that I most agree with in her finest words :).
Also, I think it's really cool that y'all are including us in this! Thanks!
I really think that I want to keep some things the same. I love the feel of the CB; how it feels so welcoming and unforgettable. It would be nice to organize Kyngdom a bit. I'm not sure how that would happen but it feels a bit outdated and chaotic since it was dead for so long and few (if any?) of the older CBers are around to help.
I also especially like the idea of a pronouns box and a search bar for threads. Perhaps we could also address what happens when you create a post and you get sent to this home page? I don't really know what else to call it. I'd like it to stay on one of the main pages.
Anyway, that's it for now. I'll post more when I think of it later. Thanks again!

like some other people have said, thank you for reaching out for our advice!! and thank you so much for all the work you're putting in.
I agree with thread titles—BaB has these, but adding them to other sections would be useful. Also a search bar!! Then the thing Poinsettia mentioned where specific online offshoots of Cricket require flash player to be enabled [but I believe it was discontinued a few years ago?] and that's not necessarily possible. Maybe dysexic-friendly options for the fonts/CAPTCHAs. I'd honestly rather not have password-protected usernames, if only for things like anonymous posts or SIs where you'd use a name once and it'd never be an option for anyone else. The ability to delete/edit posts would be very handy too. A main street area could definitely be cool as well.
a lot of these are pretty ambitious XD I hope you know that we all really appreciate this even if a lot of the proposed changes don't end up happening.
