Spelling bees.

Chatterbox: Chirp at Cricket

Spelling bees.

Spelling bees.

My school has one in less than a month. The winner gets to go into the district bee. I'm entering it, and I'm really nervous. I've been studying, and I really, REALLY want to do  well, possibly win, and I've been studying a lot, but...

I entered one in 4th grade, and I was so nervous, I accidentally spelled 'college' 'colledge.' Last year, I tried again, and I won, but, in the district competition, I was nervous again and spelled 'anchovy' 'anchovie.'

I really don't want something like that to happen again... Does anyone have any advice?

On a different note, has anyone else ever been in a spelling bee before?

The movie Akeelah and the Bee is awesome. I think there's a little language in it, but it's a great spelling bee movie. I have never been in a spelling bee, but in general I can spell words right by writing in the air with my finger if I have to. Having read so much, "seeing" a word written gets me the correct spelling almost every time. Try that - make yourself "write" the word.

Oh, I've never been in a spelling bee before. But I desperately want to be! I am super good at spelling. For example: supercalifrajilisticexpialidocious. Whaddya think of that? Or Tyrannosaurous?

@ Elizabeth: Hippopotomonstrosesquipedalianphobe!

@ Emily: Yeah, AatB is a pretty good movie. And I too "visualize" when spelling, which people think is weird. :)

@ Ima: Our school has a spelling bee every year... last time I got out on recalcitrant because I'd never heard it in my life (and I misheard it when they read it...). It was kinda fun, though. You'd be good at it.

Re: studying: I never study for anything, with the rare exception of math... it never works very well anyway. :P

Thanks! However... I hate to say this, but you misspelled  'hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliaphobe.' There's no N before  'phobe.'

AatB is good. I watched it last year...

I normally don't study for things, but I make an exception for spelling bees. I went to the spelling bee's website and printed out a list of all the words that might be called out in any of the bees and study them. Just looking at words randomly sitting on a paper   doesn't help me, but, when they have time, my parents will sometimes take out the list and ask me to spell a few of the words on it (my idea). I seem to learn better by practicing that way than by staring.

I really hope I do well...

Oh, I get it. Like for my states test (coming up!) my mom says random states out and I'm supposed to say the capital? Kinda like that, I guess?

Don't b nervous. Study a lot 4 long periods of time. That REALLY helps.

This is one of my last posts as Clair. I'm changing my name on here.

Good for you! Honestly, just try your best (which I know you will) and study hard. It's great that you even have the courage to go up there. About the nerves, if you can, just try to block the audience out. Pretend that you're alone and no one's watching. What my mom would tell me is to focus on one object in the room, and not the people. Unfortunately, I've never been in an actual spelling bee, but I thought I would give you my words of wisdom

*is being slightly sarcastic*. Have fun and I hope you win! :)

PS~ I've seen parts of Akeelah and the Bee, too. It's a good movie. :)

I stink at spelling but ummm.. Sheesh! Why is it when I need to think of something my mind goes haywire?  I dropped an egg on the floor today;  I don't know why I said that!

The bee is on Tuesday! *is nervous*!

I'm voluntarily going to bed early on Monday. That means the bee's really important to me, as I abhor sleep and wish very much that 'twasn't necessary in order to live.

I found an old spelling bee thread made by Lena on DtE (which I would've resurrected instead of creating this thread, but I didn't know that it existed), and it said that the order of bees went, Local, Regional, State, National. However, where I live, it goes, School, District, Regional, National. I wonder why that is... Probably because Texas is so large.

Is anyone from Alaska reading this? If so, please tell me whether it goes the same way there. If my theory is correct, it would, since Alaska is slightly larger than Texas. I'm really curious to know...

At my old school, there was a spelling bee for grade 4-8 (the school was K-8).  I'd entered grades 4,5, and 6. (I'm in 7th now at a new school).  In fourth grade, I spelled macadamia wrong.  In fifth grade.... oooh, I don't remember what I did, but I know I messed up.  Anyway, in sixth grade, I got second place spelling Geronimo like "Geranamo" or something like that.  So yeah.  There you go.

Akeelah and the Bee is a great movie; I highly recommend it!

For advice on getting nervous... I'm not positive this will work, but...  Try to calm yourself before you get the word and focus on the word once you get it.  Try to tune out everything else going on. Hope that helps! :)

Good luck!!

I have, twice, but I didn't win either time. I don't like to talk about it...

I already said this, but it doesn't even say so, so I'll try again. Maybe I overused exclamation points. I'll use less.

YAY!!!!!! I WON!!!!!!!!
