Princess Acad

Chatterbox: Chirp at Cricket

Princess Acad

Princess Academy by Shannon Hale.

This is going to be the first book we read for the book club. What do you think about starting next week? (On sunday) We will try to read at least one chapter a day. If that's too short we might do two.

On second thought, maybe we should wait a little longer so that everyone can get their hands on a copy.

I'm going to sit out this round, OK? No offense, but seriously, I'm a 13-yr-old boy; I don't want to read Princess Academy.

Alright, but you're missing out on a GREAT book!  It's not light and fluffy like it sounds!!!  But I can see why you would avoid it... I've been trying to get my brother to read it for years...  :/

Oooh... ouch. Sorry! I mean a boy could enjoy it of course, but.... it is a little much. I looked down the list real quick and thought I didn't see any boys. :(

Oh, yeah, we didn't consider that... sorry. I guess because the majority of us are girls, we didn't think of that. Next time we'll try to choose a gender-neutral book.

Grace, I don't have the book yet.  I'll tell you when I have it.  I think you should wait until everyone has the book.  :)

Just remember to keep checking the BOOK CLUB! post, because when we're done, we might do a book you really like.

Sorry. Again. :( See, you would probably like the book if you read it, but I totally understand that with a girl main character and the title Princess Academy, you want to stay away.

*Sigh* I've got to sit this one out. Rather frustrating, because day after tomorrow I go to the library (I work there as a volunteer every other Tuesday) and "Princess Academy" is sitting innocently on its shelves. *sigh, sigh* But that's OK! I'll most likely be gone for only one round (if the average reading time is two weeks, and then you discuss it for another week, and then another week to decide on the next) and then I see no reason to miss any other rounds in the near future!!! :):):)

Oh poor you.  But also lucky!  How in the world did you get to volunteer at a LIBRARY????  I want to!!!! :)

Well, I live in a very small town, so everyone knows everyone, and my older siblings had been volunteering at another close-by library since they were little. Then our little one-room so-cramped-you-have-to-walk-sideways-along-the-shelves library got a grant for an addition, and on the opening day party, the librarian was asking around for more volunteers because suddenly the library was huge, and we decided it would be a great opportunity for my slightly older sister and I (we had been too little to volunteer before). Aaand, voila, it's been MANY, many years since then. I don't know what kind of library you have; if it's reeeeelly big and book-store-ish, then they might be a little hard to approach--like, who's in charge? Or they might not take volunteers, or only want trained staff or something. Or maybe not. In any case, if there's any way for you to volunteer at a library, take it! It's been the greatest experience ever! You can get books right as soon as they're released, have access to tons of wonderful literature, meet great people. There are programs at my library where authors come to talk, and I've met some really amazing authors who all have really great advice to give (one of them said that, during college, he worked at a bookstore. He said it was the most horrible experience ever, and not like working at a library). Sorry, this is long, and off the topic of the Book Club! :):):)

Grace: I'd gladly read the book before I went off to camp (it's a French camp, so you're not aloud to bring anything in English, even if it weren't a library book) but I think I'd miss the discussion. *Sigh* I'll read it when I get back, and look at the discussion thread. Maybe, if I see something that hasn't been discussed yet, I could revive the thread. :):):)

:( Why can't your read it? Cause of that camp? Maybe you could get it and speed read it! I read it in 1 or 2 days. Then you can discuss it. I mean you can be ahead this time. :)

Now we'd better start brainstorming. :) it seems like we might end up needing a new thread for the book every two days to discuss the book on, or else it will get too long. Problem is, that would mean 6 to 12 differend threads, depending on how much we read each day. That would make pretty croweded... maybe we could have them deleted when we were done with the book? (Admin?) Although, it might be fun to go back and look at it later. Maybe there could be some way to archive it, if it's good enough to do so.... Ideas please! :D

I agree that it will get kind of annoying to have tons of threads... especially if you multiply 12 threads for each book by 15+ book club members who all want to choose a book at some point!

On the other hand, there is unlimited space here, I just don't want non bookclubbers to be annoyed at the amount of threads dominating the front page, like on BaB... But I think I agree with Ima on this.

And, how often are we meeting?
