Rebelling.

The writers of pop songs often don't understand it.

Why? They're not rebelling, even as they say they are. Oh look, you're doing JUST WHAT THE INDUSTRY IS TELLING YOU TO DO, WRITING A SONG ABOUT THE 'EDGY' TOPIC OF REBELLION.

Rebellion is laughing when everyone else is serious, and being serious when everyone else is laughing. Rebellion is dancing in the rain as everyone else huddles under their umbrellas. Rebellion is about breaking free as everyone else wears their diamond chains around their necks. Rebellion is turning and fighting as everyone flees, rebellion is wearing polka dots and stripes. Rebellion is little things.

Rebelling is skipping school because you have better things to do with your time. Rebelling is talking back to your parents and standing up for what's right. Rebelling is painting your nails black, wearing studded boots and not caring about what anybody says. Rebelling is not cleaning your room because you like it that way. Rebelling is not doing your homework because it's much too lovely a day to be wasting hours inside when you could be riding your motorcycle up and down the streets. Rebelling is getting detention and owning it. Rebelling is ditching the new spring trend of pastel colors and wearing all black from head to toe. Rebelling is dyeing your hair bright blue and purple and gold and getting the sides shaved off and gelling spikes into the tops because: Hey! You like it that way. And you don't care about rules or society's standards, or what people expect you to be. Because you can be who you are and that's enough for you. I think rebels are cool, because they're different and unique.

Rebelling is when you realize that nothing is going on in your life.

Somewhere someone is alight on fire with life.

The world keeps spinning the clock keeps ticking.

And you just sit there half awake. Listening to the teacher drone on.

And then you say, "Nope, this nto what I'm going to do with my life. I have a life and it's a good thing too. So I'm not just going to sit staring at a softly glowing blue screen watching TV. I'm going to go do something amazing."

Be the rebel. Be the girl who dos her homework during lunch and recess so after school she can go run a marathon, or write a novel, or absolutely smash the lead in a play.

Don't be the person with the bored eyes and the slumped posture sitting in the corner. Be the one with the big smile and the quick footsteps. The one who runs and dances in the rain.
