@ Piper C.

I watched the movie before I read the book.  It's very good, but different from the book.  Anne Hathaway's awesome as Ella.

@ Hana G.

Have you ever read Three Black Swans by Caroline B. Cooney?  Amazing.

The Hunger Games

By Suzanne Collins

I don't know when I'll be able to read the second book in the trilogy, Catching Fire.  There are about twenty holds on it in the library!  I have a strange reluctance to buy books, but courtesy of a Barnes and Nobles Gift Card I think I'll be able to get it.  Hope it's worth it.

I didn't like the first book that much.  The writing is...too simple, is how I would describe it.  It reminds me of a rough draft, like the author had all the kernels of ideas, most of which are fascinating, but I think she could have organized and cleaned up the ideas more.  And definitely given the characters more depth.  It is too surreal that Katniss can survive the Games without being completely insane...the author needs to give us a little more of her background so we can see that from her point of view how accepted the games are as a part of life.

I definitely want to find out more about Haymitch, and the Avox with the red hair.  I guess that'll be book two and three.  My favorite character so far is Gale.  I wish he was in the first book more!

It was frustrating for me that the writing seemed so imcomplete, though I suppose I shouldn't judge that until I read the other two books.  But I felt that it could have been twice as long, just going into more depth on the details.  I would rate it altogether, out of 10 points, about a 6.8.  Maybe 6.9.

I think The Hunger Games wasn't very good. The characters seemed unrealistic, from the way they act to the way they recover quickly from illnesses and diseases. I'm really annoyed; the book had good promise but Suzanne Collins didn't write very realistic characters.

Hmm. Let's see... I have read a total of 27 books so far! Of course, the month is but half over so I have plenty of time to read more!

Right now I am reading only a few books each month--high school doesn't let me read as much as I want (that would be like 20 books a month!!).

But I really shouldn't have judged the first book of the Hunger Games quite so harshly.  I read the rest of the series and changed my opinion.  Though not the best books in the world, they are pretty good, and the other two books in the trilogy have enough character development and detail to satisfy me.  I still think the writing of the first book leaves some to be desired, but as a whole the series gets a 7.75 out of 10.  The ending was unexpected, sad and horrifying...but very well done.
