No, even Barons aren't allowed to have third children. Your character, Jessica, isn't allowed to exist either.

 WE NEED A PLOT!

Hmm... Our plot... I was thinking it could be something like eleven (??) years after the law against third children was made. What do you think? Maybe the kids could be secretly forming a rebellion or something (too much like the book?) There are a few who live in the woods and stuff so maybe they find the others or something and then... Yes, my "amazing" idea. :)

Thanks everyone for joining! I didn't know this would be such a big hit!

Here I go!

Liberty--

“Good night, my dear.” Grandmother kissed my cheek tenderly. Iturned to Grandfather. “Sleep tight. And remember-“ “Don’t let the bed bugsbite.” I smiled, finishing his saying that I’d heard since I was young.

I walked through the wooden door into the small hallway andknelt down on the floor. Pulling back the long green mat, I opened a door. Itwas square about 3 by 3 feet and creaked as I opened it.

I slipped down into the room. A white curtain covered a smallslit that used to be a window. My bedroom situated itself in the basement ofour ground floor apartment. I spent most of my time in there or with mygrandparents in the living room.

The room was made up of a small twin-size bed with white newlypressed sheets and a quilt. Next to it, a mahogany bedside table with a lampand an old copy of Treasure Island. Onthe pillow, a small brochure titled: SHADOWCHILDREN AND THEIR CRIME.

Mother had found it on our doorstep on her way home one day.I’d found it in the trash and had taken it to read.

Across from my bed stood a little desk with stacks of notebookpaper some pens and crumpled drawings. A rug, little chest of drawers and someshelves were the only other things in the small room.

I threw on some flannel pajama pants and a top, both fromTiana, my sister.

I am a shadowchild. I had been banned by the government aboutthree years after my birth.

Mother had been young and excited to show off her new borntriplets. Tiana had been born first, Cole ten minutes later and myself eightminutes after. Mother had told me that because I was technically the “third child”so, I had to endure being hidden while the others had friends and went toschool.

I sometimes remember the little girl from across the street. Ithink her name was Nora Moan. When we were little, we played together. I onlyremember that she had dark hair and eyes. But life had been good then. But soonafter a law had been made that changed everything for me.

The government banned third children. They supposedly “didn’thave enough food” and by banning us, everyone would have food.

Yes, I know, none of it makes sense but that’s what life islike. Some things are unfair.

After the law was made my grandparents moved in. They let Mamago to work and taught me and told me stories. Grandfather told me about howlife had been and I know how to plant a field of corn, virtually. Grandmotherhad read me so many books that I can’t remember their names. I learned to spelland write from her. Grandfather taught me how to do taxes. I don’t know what Iwould do without them there.

I remembered the first time that I heard about shadowchildren. I was five and I’d seen some children playing with a ball. I openedthe apartment door and ran down the hall.

I remembered Grandmother’s bloodcurtling scream as she ranafter me. She grabbed me and brought me back inside.

“Why can’t I?” I’d asked between sobs.

“You can’t go into public. It’s too dangerous.” She’d told me.

“Is there something wrong with me?” I’d asked.

“No, not at all, my dear. Not at all. Remember, Liberty, thatwe’ll all be free someday.” She;d told me.

A small tear rolled down my cheek as I went to bed.
