CAN SOMEONE PLEASE

Chatterbox: Blab About Books

HELP!
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE...

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME?  There. Now that I have your attention: I am completely out of books to read.  I haven't had one in over a MONTH and I think it's slowly killing me.  So, I've read most of Gail Carson Levine's books and love them, I also enjoy Shannon Hale's stories.  You can kind of get a feel for what I like from those two amazing authors, but I also enjoyed Percy Jackson, the Hunger Games (kinda...) and most historical fiction.  That's probably my favorite genre along with fairy tale novels.  Can someone please help me before I die, if that's possible to die from not reading?

Thanks Brynne!  That's vey encouraging!  Now I will most likely read them. :)  My friend wil be so ecstatic....  I love Shadow Spinner.  That's a wonderful book.  BUT, my mom just informed me that I have to read The Scarlet Pimpernel (spelling?) for school.  So I will have to put all these books on hold.  But I'm so happy to have a list of things to read!  Has anyone read/liked The Scarlet Pimpenel?  I don't typically like school books... bleh!

I haven't read The Scarlet Pimpernel; I've heard of it, but don't know what it's about. I liked the things I had to read for elementary school and 6th grade, but the 7th grade required reading has been very bad so far, for the most part. There were some amazing poems (I absolutely love The Highwayman!) and a few good stories, but many of the stories were completely the opposite of my taste. Certainly the book I had to read (The Watsons Go To Birmingham) was, and the other book I have to read soon (Dragonwings) is well-written enough, but the characters are uninteresting (Yes, I already started it. I was curious.).

Susan Fletcher has written some other great books, too. I've only read Alphabet of Dreams and Flight of the Dragon Kyn (no, that was not a typo), but I highly recommend them.

I can't believe you haven't read the HP books!! Are the Shadow Children OK for my age??

@Elizabeth M:  Yes, most people can't believe that. :)  And I love to read so much, that makes it even more unbelievable.  Yeah, I think  you would enjoy the Shadow Children.  They are actually like a younger version of The Hunger Games, in my opinion. The Hunger Games is WAY more graphic and gory, but they both have a somewhat similar story line... killing their children in a future America. :P

@Ima: I agree!  But some of my favorite books were school books, like Shadow Spinner!  The worst are the biographies.  Yes, I like historical FICTION.  Biographies are too boring for me.  I'll have to look up those books by Susan Fletcher.

I reccomend The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, since you enjoy Historical fiction. One of my favorites. Wonderfully written, drove me to tears on the last few chapters. It's set in Nazi Germany during World War Two. It's really good.

Katie's comment isn't up yet.

I read Shadow Children in 4th or 5th grade, so I'm sure they'll be appropriate for you, Elizabeth.

I only like biographies that are written like historical ficton novels. Those can be good, in my opinion, but they can only exist when a lot is known about the subject. I haven't read many biographies for school; the few I can thin of weren't generally very good, but they weren't long, either, so not too much of my time was wasted. I really did like most of the things I read for school in the past, but this year, the tables have certainly turned.

Aetc says npno Anapneo! That's an HP spell, by the way.

I used to love my school books (we do Sonlight, so it's a lot of literature reading), until about two years ago, when they started getting really heavy. Both in content and physical weight. However, two of the school books I've read this year and LOVED were Treasure Island and Going Solo (an autobiography of Roald Dahl). Shadow Spinner was one of my school books, too! I've read one of her other books, Dragon's Milk or something like that, and didn't like it as much. But that could have been because it was so different from Shadow Spinner.

Re: The Highwayman: I love that poem (you mean the poem, right?) too! I just did another of his works for speech/drama contest on Saturday called A Song of Sherwood, which was really fun to perform.

@Brynne: We did Sonlight for a while, too!  Now that I really think about it, I did like most of those books!  We probably read all the same books. :)  But now my mom is kind of making up her own curriculum, so I think she's just picking a book that has to do with what I'm studying in history.

I really did like the Book Thief.  It was so sad, and the way the author wrote... just magnificent!

Yes, I mean the poem; I've read it so many times I have most of it memorized, and it's really long (as you know).I haven't read anything else by that author, but I really should.

Brynne, you should read Alphabet of Dreams. It's by Susan Fletch, and it's more like SS than DM is (It takes place in Persia again), and I think you'll probably enjoy it.

@R~D~: The Enchanted Castle by E. Nesbit I thought was really good. It is sort of like a fairytale in England in the early 1900s. There is also The Phantom Stallion series by Terri Farley. It is about a girl and her horse. I really liked that series. I have read each one at least twice, some three or four times. The first book is The Wild One.

@Ima: I loved The Highwayman. I even recited it for my grandmother once. I had never recited such a long poem before so I was completely out of breath by the end of it.

I haven't read those books, but they sound good. I'll look for them sometime.

I thought March was spring. I mean, I've heard some people think of it as winter in really cold places, but I thought they were joking... It just doesn't make sense. There are supposed to be 3 months for each season. It's more even that way.

Then again, I live in Texas as well, and it's possible that if I were in somewhere more northerly, I'd feel differently.

Ima, the switch to the next season is either the 20th or 21st of the month: March--spring, June--summer, September--fall, December--winter.

Oh, right. Oops.

@ Elizabeth D: Oh, right. I haven't been outside much lately.

The reason I put that was because it has been this way for about a week and a half. Also some flowers have already reached their peak. Usaully they do this in late March. Last year I started planting flowers and clearing out brush in late March because it was too cold to do it up till then.

Calendar spring and weather spring (or any season) often don't match!

I read the Enchanted Castle and it wasn't that great... I think it was slightly confusing but I can't remember...
