Hello, all book characte

Chatterbox: Blab About Books

The character olympics!
Hello, all book characte...

Hello, all book characters! Gather 'round, for I have an interesting proposition. I'm going to do the first character olympics! Anyone can join, big or little, male or female, bipedal, or quadruped! You just have to be from a book! You shall compete in competitions of strength, agility, intelligence, and wit to win! The rules:

1. Only one character per person, please!

2. Only one person per character. In other words, we can't have two people nominating, say, Bellatrix. We also can't have two different characters from one book (or series). So, we can't have one person entering as Firestar, and another as Graystripe. Maybe you should try to nominate characters from lesser-known books to eliminate this.

3. You will write what your character does in each competition. Do not be afraid to make your character do badly. For example, a cat probably could beat a human in a race, but not in a baseball game.

4. Please, when entering your character, provide a short description for those who don't know who they are.

5. Please keep your characters in-character. You can post as them, or you can write in third person, whichever you want more. At least try to make them act as they would in their books.

6. You can make them funny, as long as it does not get ridiculous.

7. Please only enter characters from real books, please!

As soon as enough people join, we shall begin with me posting the competition! If I take too long to post competitions, feel free to make one without me. Let's try for at least five people joining. Please, if you join, you must attend each competition. If you don't, someone else can post as your character after, say, a week without notification.

I may join as well. Let the games... BEGIN!

Wait! Never mind! You did answer my question. I just didn't notice. Sorry!
I'm going to make the profile in another post, because I'm doing several things at once and I don't know how long it'll take. Admin, I hope you don't mind. Anyway... Yay!

Every one, you don't all have to ask permission, Just assume that it's Okay. I only asked because I was the first to post. Dawnpaw said, "If I take too long to post competitions, feel free to make one without me," so lets start now!

(Also, I did Luna Lovegood because even though she has a wand, she gets distracted alot, equalizing her in skill. So I won't make Luna always win!)

Right, well, I'm afraid I made it sound really awesome when I didn't mean to, but that's just because I was excited. And I was excited only because I'm obsessed. I try to bring tardigrades into everything. And thus I'm a tardigrade this time! Yay!
I'm the water bear from the poem "Travel Time." It's in the book Song Of The Water Boatman & Other Pond Poems by Joyce Sidman. The ampersand was her idea, not mine, by the way...

Anyway, here's the description:

Name: None. At least, the poem didn't say she had one, and I really doubt tardigrades have names, so let's just say none.

Species: Unknown. She's from the phylum Tardigrada, and, from the picture, probably the class heterotardigrada. Other than that, I don't really know. Tardigrades are also called water bears and moss piglets, by the way.

Gender: Female. This was mentioned.

Age: It isn't mentioned. The picture makes it seem like she probably isn't very young or old (for an adult, I mean. She's an adult.), though.

Other (appearance-wise): Well, she's brown. She looks like a bear, sort of, but she's microscopic. She has stumpy legs with sharp, white claws. Most tardigrades have eyes, but she doesn't. Her stomach is translucent, and you can see inside it... So... yeah. Just picture a microscopic, eyeless bear with white claws, a strange mouth, and a translucent stomach! And no ears. And no fur, obviously, but she is brown. Your image will be about right. When she's a tun (see Skills), she looks like that but folded.

Skills: Well, she can't actually do much. Mostly she walks around... Sometimes she eats moss... Et cetera. But she can swim! And she has survival skills! She can survive extremely hot temperatures and temperatures near absolute zero. She can go to outer space and back if she wants, and survive, even if she's hit by solar radiation. She can also endure drought and famine and, well, nearly everything. How? She folds herself into what's called a tun and goes into a chemical process called cryptobiosis in which she doesn't move or eat or breathe, and in that state she can live for years and withstand nearly everything, waking up when she gets to a place that has what she needs. The poem is about her turning into a tun when it gets too hot, actually...

The problem, see, is that that won't exactly help her here. I doubt she'll win anything. It'll still be fun, though! For me, anyway.

I'm... very obsessed at the moment. Sorry. It tends to happen, and then something is all I can think about for a while... As demonstrated... Which is why I just had to be a tardigrade here. People don't let me talk about them as often as I'd like in real life, see... Not that I can blame them, because that would be almost constant...

(OMG!!! I was just watching a show on animal planet with water bears! They are cute in a way, though! It talked about their survival skills and such. . .)

'K, first of all, I'm here! I was just a little busy earlier.

Next, everyone who joined is accepted! Interesting idea, Ima! Want to give her a name?

Third, someone suggested that we start. That is a good plan. Ping pong? Okay. That will be interesting. Should we make it character vs. someone else's character or character vs. some non-player controlled random person?

Fourth, someone asked me if they can change their character. I suppose that it's okay, as long as they make a CLEAR post explaining who they are changing to to avoid confusion.

(I think it should be character vs someone else's character.)

I stood up on my hind legs and then sat back down. My amber-golden eyes glowed slightly, then they were dull. Why did it have to be ping-pong? I was horrible at those kinds of sports. Running, I could beat almost anyone. Swimming, I was ok at. But ping-pong? Seriously? Who made up those things anyway? Man was a very strange kind, but then I remembered when I had takened care of the infant and it had helped me with The Sight. So some humans were ok. Then I shivered as I remembered my power, my very mysterious power, one that was more ancient than the world itself. . . .

A name? All right. How about... um... Urslet? Long ago, people considered calling tardigrades urslets, but they didn't. I like using things that were almost names for them as, well, names for them; I have an entire listful. Urslet means little bear; it's my favorite by far and it's what I named my tardigrade stuffed animal. On second thought, though, maybe I should use something else; otherwise I'll always think of the plush when I write the name, which does not look at all like the water bear in the illustraton (I mean, the plush is blue.). Let's see... I think I will call her... Arctisconia! People called them that in the 1890's, and it comes from the Greek word arctos, meaning bear. I don't know about the rest; conia means cement in Greek, and that makes no sense at all. But onia means permanently (in Greek again), so it could be referring to the survival abilities and how they can live for so many long years if they turn to tuns multiple times... I don't really know. Still, that's what I'm naming her. Let's just pretend assume it means everlasting bear. Do these italics work?

I think that it's only fair for my character to be against another animal. I refuse to play Ping Pong with, say, Percy Jackson. The odds would be so uneven it would be absolutely comical.

Who am I playing against? And how do you play Ping Pong, anyway? I don't know how.

Okay, Ima! That's a cool name... I will have to consider pairings. I could go against you, but I'm not sure.

(ps: The italics don't work)

I didn't mean to press submit there; I meant to press preview and then delete that sentence... It wasn't supposed to say 'pretend assume,' either; I'd meant to delete one. I don't remember which, though...

"I will go against you, Varjak," I growl in a playful way.

(By the way, what do you do if the character that you play dies in the book? I'm not saying Larka dies, but if I wanted to be a deceased character, could I?)
