I love this series! I haven't read it in years, actually, so I don't remember it much, but I'm going to reread it soon.

In my opinion the Lord of the Rings series is amazing! Sometimes (make that ahem, often) the descriptions get way too long winded, but you can skip them and still know what's going on. It's amazing really, the detail Tolkein put into his imaginary, magical world.
Movies...I watched them too. They're not as good as the books (it's rare that a movie beats its book counterpart) but though the acting isn't the best and there are a lot of over-rated battle scenes, it does a good job of telling the story.
By the way, I've been so busy that I haven't been on this site in months, but I found time today, and the thread caught my attention!
What is the Silmarillion like? I'll have to look for it if it's a companion to LotR.

I agree!! LOTR is amazing!!! The reason people call the descriptions wordy is becauseit's written in an archaic style ( which is fine with me). The Silmarillion is basically a history of the Elves of Middle Earth. It's a great work, moving and powerful. Often people find it hard to read because you just can't skim it. You have to follow it veeeeery carefully, and pay attention. Also, since it's a hostory, Tolkien will often skip from person to person. For example one chapter is about the Noldor, and the next deals withe the Sindar. But all in all, it's fantastic. By the way, my name, Idrul Celebrindal is the name of an elven Princess.

Sorry about the typos. History not hostorhy, Idril not Idrul, because it's, not becauseit's. I am a sloppy typer. Embarrassed.

Oh, don't tell me HP and Warriors are more popular then Tolkien's masterpiece!!!!!

Thank you! The Silmarillion sounds fascinating! I'll look for it. I like mythology, and that's what it sounds like.

It is, but there's some allegory too. When you read it, will you tell me who your favorite characters are????? I am partial to Maedhros, Beleg, Finrod, and Idril Celebrindal.

I read the first two books (they were good, but they take a little time to wade through so when I got to the end of the Two Towers I took a break, and then school started, and I haven't really gotten back to them...). And I'm currently watching all the movies (special extended edition!) with my mom and sister. I've seen the Fellowship about four times now and it's one of my favorite movies, but this is my first time seeing the other two.
I'm currently in love with the song "The Edge of Night" which Pippin sings in The Return of the King. Billy Boyd has such a cool voice. Actually, it's mostly because of that that Pippin is my favorite character :). When he's not being Mr. Tumnus, James McAvoy talks like that too.

I haven't watched the movies, and I don't plan to. Honestly, I don't want to. They may be good, but I can live without them. I think it's soooooo annoying how when you say that you like LOTR people assume you mean the movies. I love the books. By the way, since you've seen the movies, what was Boromir like?????? He's my absolute favorite character, but I saw a picture from the movies, and, well, he just looked *wrong*.... and I made this thread to talk about the books, not the movies.....

I love the song Into the West!!!! But Annie Lennox needs to go back to singing school. My friend can sing it sooooo much Better.
