Why does a comment or a new thread not show up for more than 2 hours??
We Admins have lots of other responsibilities. We don't just sit at our computers all day posting comments. We read each comment before posting it, so sometimes you'll have to be patient.

Yes! I agree! He's so contentious - more than I could ever be - and sweet and altogether adorable! The way he talks and acts... it's just so irresistible! Oh, I know! I was utterly devastated when Dobby died! *sob*

You guys are getting off topic, lol!!! Lol, ZNZ.
(July 2, 2010 - 5:16 pm)
Yeah. I definitely I noticed.
I like it, though. It shows our interests...

Well, now Vida's question has been answered, there's no real point to this thread, so we might as well turn it into the Dobby discussion thread! Or SPAW...
(July 3, 2010 - 3:11 pm)
True!
What are the SPAW's aims, exactly? Seeing as the Admins aren't being mistreated, like house-elves were (in my opinion, that is--I would've probably started the SPEW if Hermione hadn't), I can't think of much besides being considerate and following the rules, which is sort of a given to anyone who cares about it at all...

Do you think the house-elves were really being mistreated, though? I mean, I won't argue with you that the Malfoys mistreated Dobby, or that Barty Sr. mistreated Winky. But the Hogwarts house-elves were not mistreated. They loved their jobs, and were very insulted by the idea of Hermione freeing them. They were treated very well by Dumbledore -- he would have given them paying and days off if they had wanted them, just like he did for Dobby. But /they did not want them./ They were /opposed/ to the idea of getting them. Winky thought it would be a disgrace to be paid, and the other house-elves disapproved of Dobby's wanting wages. Like Hagrid says, "'You'd be doin' them an unkindness to free them.'" House-elves were born to work like that, it's in their natures.

True... But it isn't so much that as it is that their mistreatment is still legal. I don't think all house elves shouldbe freed; I just think that their enslavement should be a choice, not a requirement. If a house-elf wants freedom, it should be able to free itself, and there should be some sort of requirements about their working conditions. I'm fairly sure it's legal for a wizard to live in the grandest house in the world with plenty of spare rooms, but keep 29 house-elves in a tiny outhouse, give them so much work that they never have time to clean it, punish them severely because they haven't cleaned it and this person expected them to do so (using the excuse that no sane creature would ever refuse to clean something so filthy if they lived there, so it therefore must have been a reasonable thought, apparently), and—well, you get the point. There are countless horrible things you can do to house-elves. It's unfair. And they're not even allowed to use wands! Try as I might, I simply can't think of any reason for this, except possibly that an enslaved elf could learn the Imperius curse and use it to force his/her owner to give him/her clothes, but that's a bit hard to visualize, and it would be completely pointless if enslavement was optional. Unless it's because they have magic of their own which needs no wand, but in that case, maybe there should have been a law forbidding Dumbledore from using one. After all, he's frequently seen as working magic without a wand—summoning sleeping bags, for example. So there's really no point in that law...

That last point of yours is a good one. We also see Lupin using wandless magic, as well as other wizards I'm probably forgetting just now -- but no one rushes to take their wands away. And that has to be a big deal with other magical creatures -- Griphook references it several times in DH, that wizards have kept this power from them, not given them the chance to become as powerful as wizards.

True.
(July 7, 2010 - 7:32 pm)
Yeah I agree with ZNZ!
We can talk about other things now!
Thanks for answering my question!!
