Random Thoughts About Books
This is like...

This is like the random thoughts thread, but for books specifically! If you want to post random musings about your favorite book, long rants about the cliffhanging ending of the next book in your favorite series, amazement at the awesomeness of the last book you read, and so on, this is the thread for it! :)

(Iffy says <caffy>!! No Iffy you can't have any coffee the last time you had it you went wild with caffeine and did things which we do not mention)

Has anyone noticed how main characters are almost always girls? I wonder why.

Two (possibly unpopular) opinions:

-KotLC characters, and the KotLC books themselves, seem to be vaguely inspired/based off of superhero movies. Think of the powers (telepathy, shapeshifting, etc), the way the elves are always going off to the Forbidden Cities and posing as humans, and the whole culture and world of the Lost Cities. (Also please don't think I watch any superhero movie going and therefore know about these things, I've never watched a superhero movie; but luckily I have a dad who has)

-Before I get to the point, I've got nothing against Tolkien and I do like his books and his style of writing; but I think he's primarily an author who liked to worldbuild and write about adventures, and I think we read his books more for that than for the quality of the books themselves. There are a lot of writers who are technically better than Tolkien, at least in my opinion, but here we are still reading his books :]

I'm a Tolkien nerd and I agree with that. I think his writing style is hard to get into (seriously the number of times he describes gorgeous Elvin eyes per page is crazy lol) but the worldbuilding is amazing, seriously incredible so I read them for that :D

Yay, I have confirmation from an ardent Tolkien fan :D

Some of Sarah J Maas's books are pretty good, but I completely blame her for the decline of the Fae. "Fae" used to mean some kind of interesting and creative magical race. Now they're just typical elves, but with a fancy name and more toxic masculinity than any other trait. I want the old Fae back.

If Wonder had really happened, August, Jack, Julian and Summer would be at least 22 years old by now. Via and Justin would be about 26! It's weird to think about.

Ooh, another thought: what book characters have y'all seen in real life? It sounds like a weird question, but you know how sometimes you see a person who looks so exactly like a book character, it's as if the character had come to life, or as if that person is the real-life version of the character. I've seen several:

-Jack Will (from Wonder). There's a boy who attends the same chess classes that I do, and he looks so exactly like Jack Will, it's amazing. And he has just the same friendly, positive way of being.

-August (from Wonder). At the same chess classes I already mentioned, there was once a boy who reminded me of August, though he didn't have any facial issues. He had sort of longish blond hair and a charismatic air, and he basically looked just the way Auggie would have if Auggie hadn't looked the way he does (is that too convoluted a sentence?)

-Julian and Lucy (from Gone-Away Lake): I mean goodness, they were Julian and Lucy. Julian's a redheaded boy with glasses, sort of the good-natured nerdy type; Lucy's a frank, fun girl with dark hair. They looked and acted so much like their fictional counterparts. It was really fun.

-Lydia Green and Laura (from Magic or Not): I was walking along when three girls bicylced past me. One of them had a sharp chin and long, flowing golden-brown hair, and looked like she had a brash but loyal personality; the other had shorter dark hair, and that was about all I managed to see of her but she definitely looked like Laura. The first girl was exactly like Lydia, though. She just was Lydia. It was amazing. All she needed was old Mrs. Green stumping after her. Plus, you know (if you've read the book) how Lydia and Laura are always bicycling around everywhere? (At least I seem to remember that they bicycle around a lot.)

-Tyler Nelson (from Eight Nights of Flirting): There was a photo of some people in a magazine I'd picked up, and one of them looked so exactly like Tyler, all conceited and blond and technically good-looking but not actually attractive :/

-Ren (from Love and Gelato): The resemblance here is rather vague, but in his young days, Cristiano Ronaldo looked a lot like Ren - the slightly long dark hair, the long eyelashes and brown eyes, the innocent sweet boy look. The interview "Cristiano Ronaldo talks about the game that made Manchester United sign him" (or something like that) is a good example. (Come to think of it, does Love and Gelato actually say that Ren has brown eyes?? I think it does - anyway I always imagine him that way)

- Theo (from Love and Olives): I imagine him looking just like Sophie's love interest in Mamma Mia

The funny thing is that all the ones I've seen in real life, I've seen in just one town (not the one I live in). That town has a lot of really interesting people, and a whole bunch of them evidently seem to be like book characters :)

There might be more, but that's it for now :)

Another one: Rush from The Melendy Quartet, also slighlty combined with Colin from The Secret Garden. He was this boy helping out in a historical blacksmith's shop, and he had a very Rush/Colin air.

I've read it, and honestly wasn't that big a fan. I'm curious though, what did you like about it/what did you think was good?

(still working on your picturing btw... I keep on crossing out all of drawings haha. But I'll let you know when I get it right!)

Feiya says EHNIA, which I think sounds like such a pretty name :)

I just liked that even though it was rather sad, how just one thing totally effected and changed so many people. Things like that probably happen all the time, and it was just really interesting to read about. I also just loved Willow, and it's interesting reading about someone with her mind set.

And no worries! I kinda forgot about that, actually :P
