Chatterbox: Blab About Books

2021 Summer Book Log
Log your summer...

Log your summer reading here

Let's log all the books, poems, graphic novels, articles, and etc. we read this summer.  I know it is technically not summer just yet, but it is almost the end of the school year so why don't we start now!

This will be a great place to find things to read, and chat about the books you've read.  You only have to put the title and the author of the book.  Genre tags (i.e. sci-fi, fantasy, historical fiction, no-fiction, etc.) can be helpful for someone trying to find a book to read in a certain genre, similar books can also be included, you opinion on the book (let's keep debates and disagreements polite), a book review, favorite excerpts/quotes from the book, and basically anything that seems related is welcome here!

Let's start this off with a quote:

"Be you writer or reader, it is very pleasant to run away in a book."

-- Jean Craaighead George

I look forward to seeing the books you run away in this year.

OKAY so I just finished another book called Six of Crows, which was really, really, awesome. It's kind of a coninuation of the Shadow and Bone trilogy that I mentioned earlier, so you might want to read those first. Anyway, I can't wait to read the second book tomorrow!

I just finished a book called, the remarkable journey of Coyote Sunrise . It's realistic fiction and it's really good. This girl has traveled around in a bus for five years with her dad, Rodeo. One saturday, she's talking to her grandma and gets some terrrible news. Then she's off on a journey to recover a box of memories. I'd say it's 12-17? I think?

Ooh that book is so good!! I just reread it recently. I'd say ages 8 or 9 could probably read it.

I read it in about 2 days! It was a page turner. It was pretty hard stuff though.

Another book I finished recently is called, Eigth Cousins. It's by Louisa May Alcott and it's pretty good. The kids seem a little younger than they really are, but it's still good. I've started the sequel, Rose in Bloom.

Oh yeah that is a good book! I got squeamish at all the descriptions the medical stuff though. Have you read any of her other books?

Yeah, I had to skim the injury parts.  Reading about the treatments weren't so bad.  I have read two other books by this author.  Beyond the Bright Sea and Wolf Hollow.  Both are really good.  The first is about a girl who washes up on an island in a boat as a baby and is taken in by the island's lone occupant; and her journey to find the truth about her birth and why the people on the mainland shun her.  The second is about the power of truth and lies during post World War II.

Yes both of those are really good! I just reread Wolf Hollow.

So far this summer I have finished...

Aru Shah and the City of Gold by Roshani Chokshi. 4th book in the Aru Shah series. Ages 8-15, funny, quick paced. Fantasy based on Hindu gods.

Merci Suarez Can't Dance by Meg Medina. Sequel to Newbery winning Merci Suarez Changes Gears. Ages 10/11+. Realistic fiction.

Wink by Rob Harrell. Ages 8+ probably. Personally I didn't like it much, the characters & plot weren't really engaging. It's about a boy with eye cancer.

The Last Rabbit by Shelley Moore Thomas. Ages 8-12. Illustrated. It's about girls who get turned into rabbits.

Gina: the Girl Who Broke the World by Judd Winick. 7th book in the Hilo series; graphic novel; fantasy/sci fi about a girl who has magic and her friends.

Those reviews all sounded very robotic xD. Out of all of those my favorite was probably Merci Suarez but you should read the other one first.

I am currently reading:

Title: The Ruby in the Smoke

Author: Philip Pullman

Genre: Mystery

Excerpt: "Her name was Sally Lockhart; and within fifteen minutes, she would kill a man."

Age range: 12 and up, I think. The way it's written may be difficult for someone of  a younget age to undetstand.

I just started this one last night and am already halfway through!

Title: Dreaming Dangerous

Author: Lauren DeStafano

Genre: Fantasy/Mystery

Exscript: "Plum, Vien, Atrem, and Gwendle had chosen one another. Dr. Abarrane liked to tell them this, and it was true. They had been at Brassmere since they were babies, and possibly had been sharing dreams even then"

Age Range: Hm - I'm not sure on this really. Maybe 12 and up, but if your up for a bit of a fright and good dose of creepy-ness, than this will be great for you.
