The fad for

Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Books that I *didn't* like
The fad for...

The fad for listing favourite books seems to be dying out, and I have nothing better to do. Please, please, please don't take offense, I'm just trying to occupy my time.

1. Twilight etc., by Smeyer. Because... yes. Moving along.

2. Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke. Mainly because of the characters, though the idea was original.

3. Eragon, by Christopher Paolini. We've been over this one, I think.

4. Howl's Moving Castle, by DWJ. Except for Howl and Calcifer, of course.

5. GIC. Anything GIC, simply because it's GIC.

6. The Pandora series that Carolyn Hennessy never actually gave a real name to because she's a dreadful writer anyway.

7. The Mysterious Benedict Society, by Trenton Lee Stewart. I'm really sorry, I just detested these books.

8. From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, by E. L. Konigsburg. Don't even get me started on this...

There are others, I guess, but I don't want to bore anyone too awfully... I mean no offense to any fans, authors, etc. with this thread, I just honestly have little else to do. What are everyone else's thoughts on these books? Books that you didn't enjoy?

I was lukewarm about the book version of Tuck Everlasting, but I loved the movie to pieces, even though the ending always makes me cry. Speaking of which... *cries* Poor Jesse...

I hate books that are are really sad with no point, either.

Have you ever read Taste of Blackberries?

I read it for school.

My brother said he had to read The Outsiders. He told me about it and I don't want to read it...

Why didn't you like The Mysterious Benedict Society or the Mixed-Up Files? I liked them. What I didn't like is the Land of Elyon books (they lost me).

Let me explain that some other time, Emma. Bit... lethargic?... right now.

It's depressing, seeing some of my favorite books getting ripped to shreds here. What's the point of this thread, anyway?

People like to complain, I guess... It's called hatedom, I believe.

Personally, I hated- HATED- Catcher in the Rye. It was just... I mean, I know it's a classic or whatever but it's basically like, two hundred pages of some idiot angsting about how much he hates his life and how stupid everyone else is an how he hates everyone, and him going to shows or movies or whatever and complaining the WHOLE TIME about how much he hates shows and movies. And that was IT. I wasted three hours of my life for nothing but ANGST.

And then I told mom I hated it, and she yelled at me for another half hour because I don't appreciate classics. X_X

Wait, why'd it get changed to angst? There's a difference.

Or did I actually write angst without realizing it?

The admin worried that the term could be interpreted as unnecessarily crass for this environment.

@ Willa: A few purposes, I guess... one, people do like to complain, I guess. Two, sharing of opinions, and incredibly enough that's worked, no one's shouting or anything. Three, I had nothing better to do. Which leads to the question, Well, why not start a positive thread? Because everyone else had already done that. *shrug* And I enjoy more books than I dislike. If I were to do a favourite books thread, it would probably turn into quite a longuer. (not a typo)

@ TNO (umlaut): You, not liking classics? ...I find that hard to believe...

Again @ Willa: Plus, any "favourite book" list of mine would simply be a hybrid of Reuben's and TNO's (umlaut), with perhaps a few others thrown in, and therefore redundant.

Sorry, I'm rambling, aren't I.

I had never heard of GICs before, but know that I know, I'm sooooooo glad I've never wasted my time on them! I can't think of any books I really HATE right now, but there is a type of book:

Abridged Versions

They are my ENEMY!!!!!  Its like a story planning chart (i.e. main characters, begining (general scetch), problem (thats about one sentance!), and resolution/end (general scetch) (Hmmm. Might be able to tell from this, but I hate story charts, also. XD) Here, I'll make up an abrigded version now! Yay! XD

Once there was a little boy named Fred. Fred lived with his mommy and daddy in a big blue house. (lol! Bear in the Big Blue House!) Fred lived next to a very mean boy named Bobby. Boby was very mean. He pushed little girls into puddles. What a naughty boy Bobby was. Bobby wasn't nice at all. One day, Fred coudn't find his grey kitty named Whiskers. He was very sad. Bobby came by laughing in a mean way and holding Whiskers. Fred tried to catch Bobby. Fred coudn't. Fred ate a sandwich inside. After his sandwich, he told his mommy what Bobby did. She called Bobby's mommy and she made Bobby give back Whisker and say sorry. Then Bobby couldn't eat any desert for a whole week. After that, he and Fred were friends and Bobby promised never to be mean again. The end.

Tada! No interesting story-line, no satisfiyingly big, juicy "grown up" words like chuckle, evil, appologize, or any descriptions at all!!!! No change in puntuation, flow, or rythem. No interesting plot or, like I said, no interesting words! Its like living off of pb&j on white bread and apple juice! Stories should be like 5 courses of exotic Indian, French, and Asian food with sparkling friut jiuce to drink!!!!!!! Sorry for the cheesy metifores, etc! I just HATE abridged versions! It was a way to explain. Sorry for my ranting and raving. I'm gonna go to sleep and hope that when I get up I am sane enough to talk resonably about this.... But don't count on it! :P Bye!

Well, I do like adaptations of old classics, like Little Women and Heidi and stuff. They were good to get me interested in those books without throwing a heavy volume at me and saying 'Here! Read this! It's great literature!' But that kind of adaptation does sound annoying.

1. No comment

2. I agree, but I thought the plot was alright.

3. Well, I re-read it and I see what you mean, but I woudn't include it on a list of books I don't like.

4. Agreed.

5. One word. Sick.

6. Never read, and now I don't plan to.

7. Bad, definetely bad.

8. Yeah, I don't hate it, but almost all the characters are completely dull.

Has anyone read Hoot or Scat? For your sake I hope not....

Hoot. There's another case of a lukewarm book and a relatively better movie. I'm quite enamored with the movie version, actually; I've seen it like twenty times. Scat was... okay. Even more lukewarm than Hoot, in my opinion.
