Can I tell
Chatterbox: Blab About Books
Can I tell you guys a secret?
>leans in, and whispers< A really big secret?
>leans in even further and whispers even quieter< A REALLY REALLY big secret?
Okay. >deep breath<
I'm a huge Hobbit fan.
Wait! Wait! That wan't the real secret. The thing is...
>whispers even quieter than the two other times<
I like The Hobbit more than LotR.
Hey, wait, wait! WHERE ARE YOU ALL GOING!? COME BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!
But seriously. I've always liked The Hobbit more because I feel I can relate more to Bilbo than to Frodo. Don't get me wrong-Frodo's cool and all, but he's too noble and kind. He's too brave. He's what I'd want to be, but I'm not. Bilbo ,on the other hand... well, a lot of people I ask IRL say I'm a lot like Bilbo. (And quite honestly, I agree.) But he's the version of ourselves we don't often admit to ourselves. He gets scared. He's rather be home with a meal in his stomach than out adventuring. He revels in the light of a warm fire and a good book. Sure, he adventures when he can, but he wouldn't do anything GINORMOUS. What I like about Bilbo is we like to think that we're always the fearless leaders in a story, but oftentimes, we'd really be the Bilbos. (And that isn't a bad thing either, Bilbo is amazing.) So what I like about Bilbo is that he's so real. He's sarcastic and optimistic, and yet he keeps in mind the comforts he enjoys, and prioritizes. But in the end, I think that if we took risks, and no matter how much we hate taking the risks, we may come out better people in the end.
So, that's my shpiel. Have a good day, and tell me whether you agree, or maybe not. Let's have a nice friendly chat about The Hobbit-and be sure that this doesn't end in The Battle of the Five Armies. XD

Agree. Especially in the movies. Bilbo's character in the movies is consistent, while Frodo's is kind of changing and almost too noble and kind. He is a great character for the storyline though
My favorite character is Legolas or Aragorn... Hence the name "Strider"

Finally! A thread for the Middle Earth geeks! I was literally just about to make one of these. (Nasty little) Hobbitses! I'm a huge LotR fan, and some might say that I am one of many small planets revolving around a sun that is LotR and The Hobbit. I disagree, my life has more to it than Middle-Earth. Not much, but it still does. Does anyone know what Sauron's tower is called? The one at Isengard (Saruman's ) is Orthanc, but I cant remember if the tower in the East has a name.
(January 31, 2017 - 4:50 pm)
Sauron's is called Barad-dur with a bunch of fancy squiggles on top of it
(February 1, 2017 - 7:41 am)
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG-
*takes a deep breath and screams on the inside*
I LOVE TOLKIEN!!!!! AND ESPCECIALLY LOTR AND THE HOBBIT!
"I AM NO MAN!"
"THE ROAD GOES EVER ON AND ON, DOWN FROM THE DOOR WHERE IT BEGAN...."
Okay, I'm sorry, I'll attempt to stop using all caps now. I am a huge fan of Middle Earth and everything related, so I'm going to ask a question-
What race in Middle Earth would you be if you could? (wow, that question is phrased oddly)
I would probably be an Elf, because they're SO COOL! I would want to be an Elf that would have a Ring, but those spots are already taken. XD Besides, I wouldn't want to be tempted to be evil.
(January 31, 2017 - 9:54 pm)
Elf. Definitely.
(February 1, 2017 - 7:43 am)
Definitly a Hobbit. One from the linage of the Brandybucks. (Cus they can swim!) A fat short Hobbit!
(February 4, 2017 - 2:29 pm)
Hm...I don't remember the name of the tower to th east. Hang on, let me look it up real quick.
*searches*
*result pops up*
Is it Barad-dur? (with an accent inserted on top of the "u")
(January 31, 2017 - 9:57 pm)
YES!!! I totally agree. I love Bilbo!
(February 1, 2017 - 12:48 am)
Yes! BARAD-DÛR!!! I don't know why I'm so excited about something so evil. I think that I would be...one of the riders of the mark. Like Éowyn. A girl in disguise who is incredibly amazing. I would practice poking things until they explode (sword fighting, lol) in my room until someone caught me, and realized how absolutely magnificent I was, then they would tell me to go and destroy all evil. Yaaaay!!! Does anyone want to turn this into a kind of 3rd person RP? We enter have to, it was ust one of my crazy thoughts.
(February 1, 2017 - 7:03 am)
*don't have to
*just one of my crazy
That was a lot of unnoticed mistakes. Yes. Two is a lot.
(February 2, 2017 - 5:02 pm)
I would be an elf named Denithir, who has the bloodline of a fire mage, and a water mage, so is able to control both!
Finish the song!
Far over the Misty Mountains cold
Through dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day...

To find our long forgotten gold.

I love Bilbo, too, but I feel that Frodo is sadly underestimated. The film portrayal doesn't help-- I'd like to remind everyone that ELijah Wood, with his giant eyes and contrived, breathy accent, is not Frodo.
Frodo is actually about 50 years old by the time he sets out on his journey-- which means that in Hobbit-years, he is very fully grown. He's not young.
Frodo isn't all innocence and sweetness- he's very intelligent, and quite capable in many ways. The real Frodo would never, ever send Sam home and go of with Gollum-- he wouldn't even think of it. For one thing-- how would he expect Sam to be able to make it home by himself, without any supplies? For another thing, if Sam were actually hearing Gollum talking about how he's going to murder them, Frodo would believe him. And another, most important thing--Frodo never trusts Gollum, friend-to-friend-- he is always careful. His relationship with Gollum is based on the fact that, in Gollum, Frodo sees himself-- he sees what the Ring is making him.
Something that the films can't help but underplay is how horrible the Ring reeally is. Frodo isn't just carrying a pretty loop on a string that consumes you with desire for it-- he's bearing his own evil. That's what the Ring represents, after all. So Frodo is carrying this thing of darkness, and as he bears it, it is actively devouring the goodness and innocence that made him able to carry it in the first place. The Ring becomes a part of you-- and you can't run away from yourself.
So personally, I am able to connect with Frodo very well. He doesn't want to be there, on that shadowed, all-consuming road, any more than Bilbo wished to walk his less dangerous path-- any more than any of us would. And he has to make much more of a sacrifice than Bilbo does. When Bilbo has his adventure, he finds and develops more of himself. When Frodo has his, he must watch himself being twisted and eaten-- he loses himself, and everything he sets out to save. And he knows it.
So in the end, I suppose that we are all both Bilbo and Frodo-- always finding ourselves, and then sacrificing all we have found for those we love. Whenever we look around and find ourselves riddling with dragons, or burning beneath an all-consuming Eye, we will also find ourselves wishing for home and hearth and reading-chair. Sometimes we will regain those wonderful things, and sometimes not. But, whatever the situation, we should take heart from all the Hobbits, and Elves, and Dwarves, and Men, in our lives-- be grateful for our Sams, follow our Aragorns, trust our Gandalfs, just the way that both Bilbo and Frodo always did.

I concur with you conpletly Esthelle! Your writing is exploding with expretion and truth! Couldn't have put it in any other words.
Whisper says hitz. I think he means you hitz it right on the nail! (Basicly you nailed it)
(February 4, 2017 - 5:01 pm)
Wow... you put a TON of thought into this, Esthelle, that I can't help but agree. We're both Bilbos and Frodos.
And I have not seen the LotR or Hobbit movies yet. I'm scared to because I think they might ruin everything for me. Because the movie is hardly ever as good as the book.
