Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
So! Have you...

So! Have you all heard about this?

It's the American school of magic. I recently read JKR's writing about it on Pottermore, and it has a really amazing interesting history!

Even if you don't have a Pottermore account, you can still go to Pottermore, then click on Writing by JK Rowling, and read about it.

Like Hogwarts, it has four houses. The houses are named after creatures(read about the story behind this in JKR's story). They are: Horned Serpent, Wampus, Thunderbird and Pukwudgie. Unlike Hogwarts, they don't really have definitive traits, although

"It is sometimes said of the Ilvermorny houses that they represent the whole witch or wizard: the mind is represented by Horned Serpent; the body, Wampus; the heart, Pukwudgie and the soul, Thunderbird. Others say that Horned Serpent favours scholars, Wampus, warriors, Pukwudgie, healers and Thunderbird, adventurers."

The Sorting is also different from that of Hogwarts. Basically, you stand in a hall surrounded by four enchanted carvings, each representing the house. Whatever house chooses you will move in some sort of way. And "Should more than one carving signify its wish to include the student in its house, the choice rests with the student." It's very rare (perhaps once in a decade) that someone is offered a place in all four houses.

If you don't know about Ilvermorny yet, then read about it and you can talk about it on this thread. The same thing goes for people who already know about it.

So, have you taken the Ilvermorny Sorting Quiz yet? If so, what's your house? (And what's your Hogwarts house?)

I took it on Pottermore and got Horned Serpent, which I kind of expected to.

At Hogwarts, I am a proud Hufflepuff.

Oddly enough, I am put in Gryffindor... So unless my perspective has changed on things - I mean, who knows? I swear it had me in Hufflepuff before. Maybe I was mistaken. But it clearly shows Gryffindor on Pottermore as my house.

As for Ilvermorny, no offense, but I don't like it. I could not even get through the history of the school without cringing. Meaning, I did not read it. It is just... wrecks the purpose of Hogwarts. And personally, I am stuck on the trio (Ron, Hermione, and Harry). Anything outside that circle is a no go. Unless it is close friends to them, like Neville, Hagrid, Dumbledore, or Ginny for example.

But nonetheless, I took the Ilvermorny quiz and it put me in Thunderbird.

Sorry Ilvermorny fans - banish me now to Azkaban. I failed. Terribly.

You didn't fail, Ashlee! Of course you didn't.

I personally like the idea of Ilvermorny-- because I enjoy observing how similar it is to Hogwarts, and in what ways it is different. In many ways, the differences and similarities are those also of England and America. For instance, in Hogwarts, students are placed into the 4 Houses by the Sorting Hat-- as we all know. The student does have a significant role in his/her Sorting, (Harry desperately not wanting Slytherin as a House and and therefore being placed in Gryffindor) but on the end, the Hat really decides. In Ilvermorny, the student stands on the knot in the floor and one of the 4 House statues indicates by way of light or movement that they want the student in question placed in their own. Unlike as it is with Hogwarts, there is not a supreme judge like the Sorting Hat, which makes it's decisions based on the Student's wishes, but still ultimately makes the decision. In Ilvermorny, the Houses are more suggesting then deciding. And it will happen that more than one statue will indicate that it wants the student-- in which case the student actually does the deciding. So the two schools are naturally and wisely reflective of their countries. Neither is inferior, and they are both very similar, but there are marked differences. And it seems that most of the foundation-traditions of Ilvermorny come from Hogwarts-- which also corresponds to England and America.

I was placed in Pukwudgie for the Ilvermorny quiz. I am a Hufflepuff in Hogwarts, though I am only Hufflepuff over Ravenclaw by one answer. I think we call that "Huffleclaw".
