Chatterbox: Blab About Books
This might be the spoiler post of the century, but I made a few "favorite" posts a while back, and I thought I'd continue with a rather morbid topic: death scenes. As I said, this thread is going to contain waaay too many spoilers, but I am rather a fan of killing off characters in my own stories (I already said I was wicked, diabolical and villainous in another thread), so I thought I create a post dedicated to those poor departed souls. It doesn't have to be restricted to books, either; if there is a particularly astonishing scene in a movie, for instance, feel free to post that.
To begin: *spoiler of Percy Jackson*
My favorite is Luke Castellan's. Ever. Because he sacrifices himself for the good of his old friends, and to save the world. He has always been one of my favorite book bad guys. I've always felt for Annabeth because she had to chose between him and Percy, although she really didn't have that much of a choice.
*spoiler of Fellowship of the Ring*
This is pretty much the only substantial death in the entire series, and it is Boromir's. I think it was better done in the movie than the book, but that was only because they had to ham it up a trifle.
I've got to get offline now, but I'll think of a few more for later!

Robert Joyner in Paper Towns

Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter in The Amber Spyglass. Very dramatic way to go.

I would say the one death scene I have read over and over again and I just love, but NONE of you have read the books. *sigh* Yes, you guessed it, it's from the Tapestry. Oh well, there are wonderful others:
*Spoilers for PJ*
Zoe Nightshade's death was just awesome. Really RR did a very good job. And yes, Everinne I LOVED Luke's death.
*MAJOR spoilers for the Yearling*
Flag's death was just. . . pricless. My mum, sister, and I were reading this book aloud and later I went back and read that part again. I cried for that little fawn.
*spoilers for Uncle Tom's Cabin*
Little Eva's death broke my heart. She was such an angel, then she went and left. But her death was so well written, too.
*end of spoilers*
Why I am I thinking of classics?
*spoilers for the end of Fablehaven: Grip of the Shadow Plague (not sure whether any of yous have read it, but. . .)*
Lena's death was amazing and so sad. I loved her as a character. She was one of my favorites. But the way she died. . . amazing.
*MAJORLY MAJOR AS IN DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO DIE IF YOU HAVEN'T READ IT Spoilers for the Two Princesses of Bamarre*
Addy's sister's death, though they didn't really show the exact 'scene' was amazing.
*End of spoilers*
Yeah, that was a lot of spoiler spewing. Oh well.

*Spoilers*
PJ:
I loved Luke Castellan's death!!!! It was just awesome. Just awesome. And Zoe Nightshade's! I loved how she became a star constellation! That was just beautiful. I also loved Silena Beauregard's death, since she died a hero, and will get to see Charles Beckendorf.
Anne of Green Gables movie:
This is one case where I actually like the movie version better! But Anne of Green Gables starring Meagen Follows. The scene where Matthew dies. I SOBBED but it was BEAUTIFUL!!! How he was telling her how proud he was, how he never really wanted a boy, but loved her. His Anne. "My girl." I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO CRIED UNCONTROLABLY!!! It was SO sad and SO beautiful!!!!
Little Women:
I did, I admit, like how Beth died as the moring came in her mother's arms, just as she always wanted to. I was so sad, but I am glad she died that way.
*end of spoilers*

I love Percy Jackson. I was so sad that Silena was the spy and then she had to die!!!! My friend was so sad that Luke died. And I agree with you when Matthew died. It was so sad!!!!

Oh, Zoe's was the best.

I can't believe I forgot about Zoë and Silena! I almost cried during both of them. RR does a most commendable job in killing of his characters. I have a morbid curiosity as to who is going to get killed in Heroes of Olympus.

I did cry! At all of them! I can't beleive I forgot Silena! Thank you, BHR, for reminding me! *goes off and cries in the corner for all the sad deaths*
(November 23, 2013 - 11:12 am)
@ Corina: *slips over and joins my twin in crying in a corner* I know, it's so sad!
@ Everinne: I do have to agree there. Rick really does do a good job writing death scenes. They're not obsessively sad to the point you want to laugh, or really soppy either. It's just enough to get you crying, but the characters behave realisticly through it. It drives me nuts when characters act so inhuman around deaths.
(November 24, 2013 - 12:25 pm)
Luke and Ethan Nakamura's.

Oh... my goodness.
Boromir.. *sighs* I.. that part in the movie was so.. frustrating, and I wanted to cry so bad, that I had to violenty throw something to stop myself.. it was so... so sad. Even though I didn't like him before. It was just so completely devastating. The Ring had been controlling him, but in the end, he died in a noble way.
In the televison Redwall series. At the end of the last season, I believe of.. Mossflower? When Martin's best friend, Rose died. And afterwards, he had to continue his journey without her. That was so so sad, that after the show was over, I just sat in a dark place, and cried buckets for, like, half an hour without stopping once. I cannot remember any time that I had cried that much. Ever.

@ Blackberry E:
(hello fellow fan of LOTR)
I never liked Boromir until I saw the film. He seemed a lot more human and tragic, somehow. Especially the part about "my captain, my king" to Aragorn, even though he initially disliked him. My only hang up about LOTR is that there weren't enough deaths, but Frodo's departure to the Grey Havens and leaving his friends behind had me in tears at the end of the book.
(November 24, 2013 - 8:40 pm)
I LOVE LOTR! They are the best films and books ever! Another awesome death is in STAR WARS! When Darth Vadar/Anakin dies, it's amazing. I know that's not a book, but still.

I enjoy death scenes, and I'm not a big crier when popular and/or main characters die (SPOILER EXAMPLE Dumbledore). I find it annoying when authors kill off their bestest supporting characters (SPOILER EXAMPLE, Fred Weasley, Sirius Black, Tonks, Lupin, etc.) John Green's deaths I find very sad after the fact, when I'm not actually reading it. Maybe because with one of them I was spoiled ahead of time and the second one I was in school and I wasn't supposed to be reading.
