Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Overrated Books
I thought the...

I thought the last version of this thread was pretty interesting, and I've got some new opinions on these things, so here I go.

Twilight, primarily. Ugh. My Twilight story:

 I was at the library, casually walking by the M's. The word 'Twhlight' randomly popped out at me. I was intrigued, because I was in fourth grade, had never heard of the Twilight saga,  and 'twilight' was one of my favorite words at the time. Plus the T wasn't capitalized, which I just found plain weird.

I picked it up and saw the back first. Instead of a description, it was an excerpt -- a whole paragraph of Bella's soppy whining about Edward's awesomeness. I wrinkled my nose, though a part of me was still telling me that to give it a chance, maybe one of the more romantic parts. When I turned the book over and saw KStew and James Pattinson together, I just shoved the book onto the shelf and went, "Nuh-uh. I'm not reading that thing unless my grade or life depends on it."

Later, I found out more about Twilight, and, well. Ugh. I've nothing against romance, but some authors can make their MC fall in love without them whining about it for half the book.

Not to mention the sparkling.

And the animal blood thing.

And the fangirls' obsession and T-shirts and 'OME' and 'OCD' and you get the point.

And the stalking.

And the vampire baseball.

And the other bad morals.

And did I mention the sparkling?

~~~
Also The Clique series, which I mentioned before.
~~~

And Percy Jackson And The Olympians. Percy's a boring, annoying, predictable character who takes risks that, if they go wrong, would get everyone into a bigger mess that they were in before. But of course they never do go wrong. Gah. (example: he tells Geryon he'll clean the stables and his terms.) And he battles what's-his-face in The Battle of the Labyrinth. And he takes the sky from Artemis or Annabeth, I can't remember which one.

 Anabeth was almost just as annoying, except for the fact that she had interests and a fat ore imaginative and realistic fatal flaw.

I greatly dislike The Hunger Games. Enough said.

I second you on Twilight and the Clique.

On Twilight:

Me, in fifth grade: Ooh, this sounds good! *reads* Mrr. It was okay, but I don't love it. Ooh the next book! Maybe it will be better! *reads* *retches* I'll just finish reading the series for the sake of the series. *reads Breaking Dawn (remember, I was 12-ish)* 0.O *runs away screaming*

On the Clique:

Never really read it, but it just sounds like a huge magnifying glass dropped on some snotty girls from my school.

On PJO:

I actually liked it. Say what you will about them, I thought they were pretty good.

On realistic fiction in general:

I dislike. Sci-fi is more awesome to me. Realfic is too close to stupidity and monotony of life. I mean, I like realfic if it's got some action in it, like crime novels and whatnot. But in general, I dislike.

*thus ending my rant*

Spambert Spamstein says gkit. He likes the Warriors, oh how cute for him.

*is reminded of things*

On Warriors:

Originally, I liked them. They were cool, and I was 11, and I could run around at recess pretending to be Shadowkit from SkyClan. But the series dragged on and on and ON, and finally I just gave up. I didn't like the transition from the down-to-earth, real, flesh-and-bone cats to StarClan vs. Dark Forest.

Series 1: Ooh! Awesomeness! I is SHADOWKIT!

Series 2: They're going places. Okay.

Series 3: Oh. Magic powers. Meh. *later- NOOO, HOLLYLEAF!!!!*

Series 4: Read for the sake of reading the rest.

There's a fourth series? Oh dear. I've only heard of Warriors, New Prophecy, and Power of Three. I read up the the New Prophecy, then gave up. I think Erin Hunter (sorry, the Erin Hunters) (I still find that creepy) should have sopped at Warriors. Or at least at The New Prophecy.

The Clique: Yeah, that's pretty much it. I read them because my mom brought them from this huge book give-away thing and I was suffering of Tragic Book Deprival. So I read three of the books then retched and put them down.

@ Red

I used to dislike them, because the writing was really horrible. Then I realized how much depth and meaning they had, and now I like them more than I used to. I hate it when people who like it are just obsessed with the action or blab on about Team Gale or are crazy Katniss fangirls. None of the characters were really that likable.

@ L on PJ

 Eh. Your opinion.

I want to know how you think the Percy Jackson books are overrated?

Oh, and 'fat ore' should be 'far more' and 'James Pattinson' should be whatever his real name is. Sorry, but I somehow got him connected to James Patterson, and...

Speaking of which, Maximum Ride is overrated too.

Totally agree with you.  I hate Twilight even though I've never read it.  Ugh.  Just...stupid.  Resorting to gore and sex to fill in the gaping absence of ANY literary merit of ANY kind.  Pah.

Percy Jackson...yeah.  Sorry.  Just kind of stupid too?  I know what you mean about his character.  He's such a stock character.  Gary-Stu.  Nothing ever goes wrong for him.

Except in the later books there are some interesting, complex characters, like Nico (my favorite! always loved anti-heroes), and the 'other side' of Hades.  And Luke.  He was well done. But still, as a whole, kind of...yeah.

I've never read the Clique series.  Why would I want to read a series about cliques?  That's so...middle-school.  Sorry.  High-school sophomore here.

I can't think of any other overrated books at the moment.

Oh- The Hunger Games.  I know, some people don't like them, and that's understandable.  I actually did, though I'm not a fanatic.  I think the key to understanding them is to read a bit deeper than the action, the romance, and even the rebellion.  Because they're not about overthrowing the oppressive government and making a better life and being free from injustice when it comes right down to it.  They're about how good intentions go awry, the effects of war and violence and hardship on young people, about how one's 'public image' can warp one's inner self.  At least that's how I see it.  One has to be objective sometimes.

For the record, there's no gore or sex in the Twilight series until Breaking Dawn. And there it consists basically of the world's most nauseating c-section ever.

As to the Clique series, um, those are biting satire, right? Please tell me those are satire, because if they aren't, I weep for the future of literature. (and if they are, then they're amusing in small doses).

The first Maximum Ride book was pretty good. The rest just got... awkward. Warriors is waayyy too overrated and so is Harry Potter. The writing's pretty good and the whole wizarding world thing was cool but... it's pretty easy to grow out of them, for some people.

Same here on the Harry Potter and Warriors.  Sarah Plain and Tall was really over rated.

Sarah Plain and Tall?! I totally agree! I thought that book was hideously boring and somewhat pointless. Or at least, overdone.

I really liked Sarah Plain & Tall! I thought it was a great story, much better then some of the garbage out now.
