The Ski Race
George’s heart pounded. It would only be a few more minutes before the ski race began. Competitors from all around the continent were getting ready for the youth North American Ski Championships.
The sun was shining; it was a pleasant day. There was a light snowfall, with a few inches of powder and great skiing conditions. The snow on the serene mountains glistened in the sun. However, despite the beautiful surroundings, George was still nervous; this was the biggest ski race he had ever attended.
George’s turn to race was coming up. He saw more experienced competitors and studied their skiing form. He thought that he might be able to learn something from his competition. He also studied the terrain and noticed patches of ice, which he should avoid. George wasn’t as skilled as most of the other kids, but he had studied the slope.
When George’s turn came, he was much less nervous, because he had spent the last fifteen minutes watching the other skiers. He climbed up to the start line with three other kids and awaited the countdown. He could see his family cheering for him in the crowd.
“Three, two, one, blaarp.”
The starter horn went off, and George and his opponents flew down the mountain. One of them hit a patch of ice, causing him to fall behind. After seeing this, George was pleased with himself for studying the terrain. He also learned a trick from some of the other skiers: when he hit rough, steep terrain, he could use his pole to pivot and go fast without crashing.
As George neared the finish line, he came neck to neck with his opponent. George saw another ice patch and did a quick turn around it; however, his opponent wasn’t paying close enough attention and hit the ice! His opponent slowed down, and George got first in his race!
At the awards ceremony, he got incredible news! He got the twelfth best time overall. Her was the twelfth best youth skier on the continent. After the ceremony, he and his family rushed off to celebrate.
