Alone with Monsters
This story that I’m about to tell you is terrifying! Also a little bit funny and strange. Let me set the scene.
It was a stormy night. The moon was full. Lightning cracked! Thunder boomed! I had a flashlight that I was sure would be good enough that I could do a puzzle. I went down to the basement to get a puzzle. When I got to the bottom of the steps, I heard the door shut. My flashlight went out! It was pitch black!
Suddenly, I heard a loud scratching noise. I heard a groaning noise. I started running! Ahhh . . . Oomph. I ran into the wall. I turned around and started running. Ahh . . .Oomph . . . I tripped over the monster! It was hard but in some places cushy. I caught myself with my hands, got up, and started running, but this time quietly. Maybe if I was quiet they wouldn’t hear me.
Wait—who would rescue me!? My brother, Chase, was in his room. My dad was taking a nap. My mom was at the store. All I could do was stay low.
Squeak, squeak, bats, vampire! Now there’s a seven-foot monster and a vampire after me! Hisssss went the monster. I just have to sit here, balled in the corner, hoping they don’t find me.
After about five minutes, I heard my mom call. “Julie, where are you!?” Mom yelled.
What should I do? I made a run for it! Now by the sound of her voice, I knew where the stairs were.
When I got up the stairs, I told her what happened.
She took me downstairs and shone her flashlight at a mouse hole which Polly, our cat, was sticking her paw in. “See, it was just Polly, and the squeak probably a mouse, and the gigantic monster you tripped over was the couch.”
So I went upstairs, got an icepack to put on my head, and then helped my mom unpack the groceries. I’m never going down in the basement again in the dark, though.
