The Haunted House
Cassie looked out the window; it was a cold Halloween night, which finally turned dark. “Come on, Cassie,” Cassie’s younger brother, Henry, called from the front door, “I want to get lots of candy this year, more than YOU got last year.”
“Who cares?” Cassie replied. “We have to give most of our candy to the school candy drive anyway.” Still, Cassie hurried out with Henry.
House after house they went. Soon, their Halloween bags were almost full. Suddenly, Henry said, “I have to go to the bathroom.”
“They probably would let you use their bathroom,” suggested Cassie, pointing to a yellow mansion nearby.
“But I don’t want to go in,” complained Henry. “It’s really big and SPOOOOOKY.”
Cassie hated the way that Henry said “spooky.” It gave her shivers. “No, it isn’t,” claimed Cassie. “Haunted houses aren’t real.” But the truth was, she didn’t want to go in either.
Reluctantly, Cassie opened the front door of the house, which had a sign that said: “Come In If You Dare!”
“Let’s find the bathroom so we can get out of here before the skeletons and ghosts find us,” whispered Henry.
“Good idea,” Cassie whispered back, “but where?”
“Don’t know,” Henry hissed. “I feel there’s a ghost somewhere.”
“Ghosts don’t exist,” snapped Cassie.
They quietly tiptoed up the winding staircase—it seemed to take forever. They finally got to the top and were surrounded by five identical doors that each had a skeleton dangling from a nail. Without thinking, Henry pushed open the closest door.
Suddenly, they found themselves fact to face with a gigantic green monster. His face had pimples all over it with three eyes right in the middle, and his nails were as sharp as knives. “How dare you interrupt my sleep?” he bellowed. “I’m going to eat you up!”—
“Wake up, Cassie,” cried a familiar voice. “You’re having a nightmare.” Cassie suddenly found herself fully awake, face to face with her brother, who never looked more lovely.
“Come on, Cassie,” said Henry. “I want to get lots of candy this year.”
