Here's the beginning:

Most people would tremble or sweat at the sight of a government official staring straight at you, asking personal questions, questions you couldn’t even pay a regular person to answer. But I stared right back into his eyes, unfazed.

“So, do you, Akira Kamiyama, swear not to commit any crimes ever again?” he questioned sternly.

I solemnly nodded. “Of course. I am ready to stop being a criminal and become a normal citizen.”

The official didn’t look that convinced but sighed, “Fine, we will allow you to go free, but you will be under careful examination for the next year.”

This was the scene I replayed in my head again and again for no good reason. It’s not like it was that important to me. After all, I was now a free girl, using my smarts to get what I wanted. But once you’ve committed a crime, part of it always lingers in your mind…

---

I've been working on it with my friend for two years now so we've finished the first book and we're on the sequel. Tell me what you think about it!

I like singing along to songs, albeit very badly and off tune. I have an older sister. What are your opinions on siblings?

I don't to theater, though I do have drama class to kind of try it out I guess. How long have you been in theater, Wildsong?

I have soooooo many unfinished stories that I've never had the commitment to finish. But yeah, that advice is good! It also helps when you collaborate because it lightens the load and it also gives you more pressure to write.

So I was giving pangolin a chance to post, but I guess I'll do it!

That's really cool, Moon Wolf! It's impressive that you've been able to stick to it for so long! I really like it! When (or if you want to) you publish it, I'd love to read it!

Siblings are....... a lot. I love my brother so much and would do anything for him, but we do fight a lot, and sometimes over the most stupid things. What do you think?

I was in a show a long time ago. I don't quite remember what age. It was my first big show and I had a bunch of lines and a monologue. It was Phantom Tollbooth and it was a lot of fun! Then the year after I was going to do Chitty Chitty Band Bang Bang with the same people but it got shut down because of Covid. Then I didn't do theater until this year!

For sure it's good to collaborate. I'm actually thinking of continuing this story that I started with my friends because I like the plot.

Talk soon!

Sorry for the late reply!! I've been sooo busy lately :/ And there I was thinking I'd actually have time to relax during winter break :/

Well, here I am, finally! :P

I love that so far, Moon Wolf! Even in those few paragraphs, there's already a ton of characterization and foreshadowing, and if I had that as a book, I'd definitely keep reading! Like WiLdSoNg said, it's so cool you've been sticking with that story for so long :D

I also have a sibling -- I have a sister, who's two years younger than me. Sometimes we fight, mainly because we're close in age and have similar interests so y'know ~competition~, but for the most part we get along. :) We've collaborated on several writing projects, most recently a short story we gave to our parents for Christmas, so that was nice :)

I'd love to do theater, but my middle school didn't do any plays or anything, and now I barely have any time for even my low-commitment clubs :') I do love watching/reading plays and watching/listening to musicals, though! And maybe I'll join stage crew next semester? :D

Collaborating, yeah, that's a good suggestion. I've collaborated with my sister and attempted to with my friend, but not on any big projects. I think it'd be really cool to cowrite a novel with someone! I've never tried that.

What sorts of hobbies do you guys have besides writing?

And again, I'm sorry for the late reply :/

Thank you! I'll post more parts when I have time if you'd like! Any of you have writing projects you're currently working on?

As for my older sister, we're a bit farther in age so we don't fight as much (though we did when we were younger). We mostly get along now.

For hobbies, I play two instruments: guitar and piano. For guitar, I started a few years before covid, stopped, then continued last year. For piano, I have played for five years or something, but I haven't improved as much as I'd like, unfortunately. How about you?

I tried to pick up guitar a while ago but I couldn't stick with it :p. My grandfather is actually a musician so that's pretty cool and my great uncle used to make guitars. So music runs in my family I guess but I couldn't stick with instruments!

I really like being outside too! That's another one of my hobbies. I love working on survival skills; I've been doing it since I was six.
I love reading of course. I also love soccer and Nordic ski racing. I actually just had practice today so my legs are pretty tired. Speaking of being busy, pangolin, I signed myself up for 4 ski practices this week! Kind of crazy and not at all the kind of relaxing we should be doing on a winter break!
Do either of you play any sports?

(December 26, 2023 - 7:49 pm)

Yeah, I'd love to read some more parts some time, Moon Wolf, if you don't mind sharing :D

I've been kind of bouncing between several different writing projects right now. I did National Novel Writing Month in November, and I'm planning to start editing that soon. I've also been doing some plotting for a fantasy/sci-fi/superhero sort of thing, but I'm stuck on a few worldbuilding things, so I've set that aside for the moment. I've also been trying to write a screenplay, but I'm haven't written any screenplays since forever, so I'm just trying to get used to the medium again (yes, I was very much inspired by the thread on Inkwell :]). I think it might be physically impossible for me to only be working on one writing project at a time XD What about you, WiLdSoNg? Do you have any current writing projects?

Ooh, guitar and piano, that's so cool, Moon Wolf! I've been wanting to learn the guitar ever since my grandmother gave me her old guitar, but I haven't been able to stick with it. Plus my pinkie finger's kind of messed up because I broke it several years ago, so it's a bit of a struggle to get the chords right, even the ones that don't involve my pinkie :P Anyway, it's so awesome that you play the guitar and piano! Have you ever tried writing your own songs, Moon Wolf? I know you write poetry, so maybe...?

Survival skills, that's awesome!! I also love being outside! Unfortunately, I live in a city, so I don't get out into nature as much as I'd like to, but whenever I go up to my great aunt's lake house, I make a point of disappearing into the woods for a little bit :] What sort of survival skills do you know?

Ooh, soccer and Nordic ski racing! Both of those sound cool. Good luck with all your practices!! :D

I play a couple sports--I love softball, but haven't formally done it since the pandemic (though I have had a few games of wiffleball with my sister and neighbors). I also do snowboarding in the winter (haven't yet this year, but we do have a trip planned over February break!), and I'm planning on joining the fencing team at my school this spring! Do you do any sports, Moon Wolf?

Some other hobbies of mine are hand lettering (which I mean technically that's writing but y'know) and the sports I mentioned above :D

That was kind of long, sorry :P Have you guys been reading any books lately?

ty for the encouragement! Here's another part, with a new POV:

Tristan

I always thought that I was an outcast, as people would never bother to interact with me. Someone would never willingly come up to me and strike up a conversation. I mean, who would talk to someone who looked sleep-deprived, depressed, and like a murderer? It was understandable, I was sleep-deprived and somewhat depressed. I guess I also made bad choices, and meeting an ex-criminal was one of them.

I’m an orphan, so I never knew my parents. My real ones anyway. A couple adopted me when I was young. They were really caring, as if I was one of their own, and even paid for my martial arts classes, but they were always very busy and distant. Now, even as a college dropout, I have no friends, no family, and nothing valuable to my name. To be honest, I don’t mind. I don’t make an effort to make friends anyway. I just focus on my martial arts classes. I’ve always been talented at that, even when I was just a kid, so why would I give it up? Maybe my father was the leader of the martial arts mafia or something. But like I said, I never knew him, so how could I know?

Anyway, I should tell you about how I met an ex-criminal. When I first met her, I actually didn’t know she was a criminal at all. I was just going home from my martial arts class when I came across a taller-than-average girl. She had a loose ponytail and her eyes were a striking brown, almost black shade. She was busy looking at her iPel 41x9 (a phone-like projector device that I wish I had), then looked up and noticed me.

“Oh, hello,” she said. She nodded at me, half-smiled, then looked back down at her iPel.

“Hey,” I replied quietly. I walked faster, hoping she wouldn’t think I’m some weirdo following her. It didn’t help that I was probably dressed like a rat in martial arts merch either.

“Do you do martial arts?” she asked, not taking her eyes off her iPel.

“Uh, yeah. How did you know?” I mean, I supposed it was obvious, seeing what I was wearing.

The girl eyed my clothes. Shrugging, she looked back down at her iPel and started quickly walking away. I began running to catch up with her.
“Hey, wait up!” I yelled.

She was pacing faster now, almost like a jog. She turned her head towards me to shoot me a half-disgusted, half-uninterested look. I ran even faster, but my legs were starting to ache, especially after the intense workout and training I just finished. I was looking at the concrete until I saw her sneakers. They weren’t moving, so I slowed down.

“You can stop running now. What do you want?” the girl asked impatiently.

Like a fool, I forgot.

“If you’re not going to say anything…I might as well go. I’ve got a cat to feed.”

“Oh! Sorry about that. Uh, do you need any help going home?” I asked.

“Excuse me?” Her eyes widened.

“Wait, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to say that, it just slipped out. It’s just that no one’s ever… No one has really ever said hi to me before,” I murmured.

The girl sighed. “Look, you might have nothing better to do, but I better get moving if I want to get home in time. I don’t have any time to feel sorry for you.”

I nodded, embarrassed. “Oh, okay.” I quickly turned and ran away, my face turning hot. I couldn’t believe I had just blurted that out to a stranger! But that was how it started, and this ex-criminal… Well, she turned out to be friendly and super smart, and we became acquaintances, if not friends.

---

It's cool how you did NaNoWriMo, @pangolin. I probably wouldn't have enough commitment to work on a novel of my own for a whole month, honestly. And good luck on your screenplay!

I have tried to write one or two piano songs before, though I feel like now I could make so much better ones. The problem is that I just don't have the time nor inspiration. As for guitar, I haven't tried to yet, but if I do make a piano song, I could probably try to transfer it over to guitar chords, which would be easier for me than just straight up thinking up a guitar song.

Survival skills sound cool. I don't know anything really about it, but I do like hiking and being outside. I don't really play sports, but I do badminton for fun (not professionally, just as a hobby).

I recently finished the book Out of Range by Heidi Lang and I thought it was pretty good. I'd recommend it. How about you?

Have any of you done anything or are planning to do anything for winter break?

That sounds super interesting, Moon Wolf! I want to know what happens next!

That is pretty cool you did NaNo, pangolin! It seems really cool but I've never done it.

Some things I've learned how to do that are survival-y are build a fire with a knife and some rope or identify animal tracks or make a slingshot. It's so much fun!

Badminton is pretty fun, Moon Wolf! My school's PE class just did a unit and had a big tournament. I had a good time.

Ooh is Out of Range good? What's it about? I always need books to read and book recs are always appreciated.

I just finished Soundless, and I thought it was pretty good. I don't remember who it's by. What is your favorite book genre?

Sorry this took a while...I wanted to see if pangolin would respond .

Ty for your kind comments! I'll post more when I have the time.

Those survival skills does sound fun! What's your favorite thing that u did out of all of those?

Out of Range (by Heidi Lang) is a book about three sisters who used to be really good friends, but have become enemies after several situations and retaliation. So their parents send them to Camp Unplugged, for them to hopefully get along better. Unfortunately, they become lost in the woods, and now they must rely on each other to survive. (Hope that's not too much)

Oo Soundless sounds (no pun intended) interesting! What's it about?

My favorite book genre is fantasy and historical fiction? How bout u?

Have you made any new years resolutions yet?

Sorry it's been taking me so long to reply lately!! I've been so busy :/

I really like the exerpt you posted, Moon Wolf! I feel like I know a lot about the characters' personalities already, and their dynamic is really interesting. :D

It's so cool you've done a few piano songs, Moon Wolf! And I like hiking and badminton too! They're both so fun :)

And WiLdSoNg, those survival skills all sound really cool!!

Ooh, I looked up Out of Range and Soundless, and they both sound like really good books :D I'll definitely check them out! Right now, I'm rereading Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow (book two of the Nevermoor series)! It's one of my favorite books :]

My favorite genre is probably fantasy or mystery - really anything with strong characters and good writing, though. What about you, WiLdSoNg?

I actually haven't really made any resolutions - rather than New Year's resolutions, my friends and I all made bucket lists of things we want to do in 2024! So, a bit like a bunch of resolutions, but ones I'm more likely to keep XD But I guess I do want to push myself out of my comfort zone and have new experiences :] What about you guys? And did you do anything fun for New Year's Eve?

Happy New Year to you both!

Out of Range sounds really good! I'm adding it to my must-read list. And pangolin, I've read the Nevermoor series! It's really good. What makes it your favorite series?

My favorite genres are fantasy, historical fiction, and dystopian. I just finished Bittersweet in the Hollow, which I got for Christmas. It was soooooo good!!! It was a fantasy book.

My biggest resolution for this new year is to relax and but less pressure on myself. I need to try and live in the moment more and be happy with that.

I have to go back to school tomorrow. :( I would much rather be on vacation.

I don't know if I already asked this (sorry if I did) but what is one or more things that you loved that you got for the holidays?

new part!

Akira

Three weeks after I had gone to court, I was just taking a stroll while scrolling through my iPel when all of a sudden, a boy in baggy clothes came up to me. What really caught my eye though, was his dark brown hair, streaked and tipped with gold. I greeted him and I heard him greet me back. What makes this boy worth mentioning, though, is that he asked me if he could walk me home when we met only about five minutes earlier. Now that’s what I call weird. He said it was because he didn’t have friends, and I get it. He had dark circles under his eyes, looked depressed, and  he would pass for a serial killer trying to escape the law. Oh, but as someone who’s a reformed criminal, I can’t be talking.

We somehow bumped into each other again, and we had a conversation. Eventually, I gave him my number, though it was just in case he needed me for anything since I felt bad, and we’ve become what I would call friends. Since then, I’ve learned a few things about him, such as his name. Apparently, the boy’s named Tristan. Making friends with Tristan would be my first good deed since I’ve become a reformed criminal. As he supposedly seemed to have no friends, I’m sure he is delighted he finally has one.

Anyways, After being released, I needed to find a job, and I quickly found a suitable one that was a secretive organization called GAP (Government Analyzation Project) that analyzed the government and everything else. The way it worked was simple: if the organization approved of it, they would check it off in a folder.

This organization obviously wouldn’t even think about hiring a former criminal as a worker, but since I had charmed them with my  smarts, which I use like ten thousand times a day, I got the job. After that, they have found me to be useful (I guess criminal experience came in handy), and have become rather dependent on me to figure out if their analysis had any flaws.

I recently realized something about the government as I was going through the history books of the “ancient” 2000s. I admit, I was a bit surprised to learn that back then, they had democracy, and it was different for every country. Nowadays, it’s basically what the ancients would call “totalitarian” where one person ruled the entire country, but in this case, it’s the entire world. These days, we don’t call it “totalitarian”, but we call it princeps-mundism.

Currently, the person who holds the position as “ruler of the world”, or Princeps Mundi, is Henry Johnson. Here’s how princeps-mundism works: The person who is currently the Princeps Mundi stays in the position for as long as he wants, which is typically until he wants to retire or dies. Once one of those things happen, the position is passed on to the son of the past Princeps Mundi. If the past Princeps Mundi doesn’t have a son, he has to write a formal document, letter, or something similar, or mention who he wants to be his successor. If the past Princeps Mundi fails to do so, which rarely happens, then someone worthy who works under the government will be chosen at random.

What this has to do with my work is that the current Princeps Mundi has recently announced that he would retire. This was shocking news, but he later said that he wanted some free time to spend time with his kids or something like that. It seemed reasonable, yet the successor Princeps Mundi had named wasn’t specific. All he said was anyone who seemed reasonable and smart enough could be the successor. This has become a worry for people, but the government sorted it out, and there will be a few people chosen and then the people would elect it, like democracy. It seemed like an ancient tradition, but it was what the government agreed was best.

I can’t spot any flaws in the way our government works, to be truthful. The only thing I think that is very, very wrong is that only boys can become the Princeps Mundi. Now, this is absolutely unacceptable because first of all, it’s sexism. Second of all, girls are just as worthy to become Princeps Mundi, if not more, due to our relatively quick thinking (womens’ brains are about five times faster). Third of all, we’re living in 2384, not the colonial times. During the 17th century, wives, or women in general, were only allowed to stay at home and do housework while their husbands went outside to work. From 1872 to 2197, girls have been able to run for president. Then, all of a sudden, Matthew Genier, who used to be Princeps Mundi during 2198-2277 decided that girls were lesser beings than boys and took away our right to be able to run for president along with every other right that Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and other women's rights activists worked so hard for.

I sighed and stopped thinking for a moment. I took a deep breath. It was times like these that I got lost in my thoughts. I took out my iPel and scrolled through the latest news. I stopped at the news of the possible candidates for the Princeps Mundi. There was this guy named Lucifer, someone named Harry, another named Nathaniel… But then I read a name that made me literally freeze. Theodore Kamiyama… Wait, that’s my father!

My father’s running for Princeps Mundi!? Now that’s unexpected. I always knew my father was good at his job, after all, he had a high salary, but I didn’t know he was so good that he was a potential candidate for Princeps Mundi! But then again, I should have seen it coming. It’s not like I know much about him anyway. When I was a child, my father would always play around with me, giving me his utmost care and attention. Those were the good old times. But now, he’s so busy with work that I doubt he even knows I completely skipped college and that I’ve walked down the criminal path before retiring.

I am sort of hoping that he’ll win, but as I said, he’s been so busy with the government these days that I never get to talk to him. It’s fine, of course, as I am basically already an adult, not a clinging child, but I still wish he could at least call me sometimes. It would be nice to know how he’s doing.

Anyway, just the other day, I found a stray cat sleeping  at the front of my door. It was cute, and I assumed it was a stray because it had no collar on, but just in case, I made sure not to get too attached to it. The cat has been pretty sweet, always by my side. The cat almost reminds me of how my father used to act… But it’s most likely a coincidence. I sort of “jokingly” named the cat Theodore after him, “Theo” for short.

Over time, I grew closer to Theo and although I didn’t want to at first, I’ve grown attached to him. Sometimes I just sit there, staring out my window, and talk to Theo about all my troubles and things I’m thinking about, like how my mother hasn’t been able to contact my father in a while. Honestly, I know I should be worried, and I am, but he’s probably on some kind of business trip that he forgot to tell Mother about. He has done things like that before, so I’m not going to fill up my head with worries concerning him. I’m sure he’s never done that with me anyway, as a real father should.

All those books sound rlly cool! I'll be sure to add it to my reading list.
As for new year resolutions, so far, probably to spend more time practicing my piano, bc i rlly need to do that more :/.
I didn't really do much for new year's eve, but we did go to the park and we also watched the new year performances and such.
Aww I also have to go to school soon, in two more days. I won't be able to get used to it.
For the holidays, I got a new book in a series I've been waiting for, and I read it immediately. I also got a new hoodie. How bout you?
Hmm...anything you achieved last year you're especially proud of?
