Elizabeth M asked me to review Soul Surfer, which I saw in a theater yesterday. On the previous Soul Surfer thread, I made it pretty clear that I wasn't expecting this movie to be much; I mean, yes, she gets attacked by a shark, how can that turn into a movie?... but I was completely wrong.
This isn't my type of movie, and I've never cried during a movie before, but I did for this one. It was so realistic! There were underwater shots where you could see blood flowing from her arm and how everyone reacted--very believeable. I just decided I almost feel worse for Bethany's friend, Alana, because she actually saw the shark and witnessed it. Bethany didn't even know what was coming, and actually didn't see it, I don't think. But Bethany was SO brave. I probably would have died of fear! :P I really don't like sharks, and she didn't even care that a SHARK was near her. I don't know, I feel like my initial reaction would be--A SHARK BIT ME A SHARK BIT ME. Not, MY ARM IS GONE MY ARM IS GONE. That thought definitely would come, but the fact that a shark was near me would totally freak me out.
Carrie Underwood's acting was terrible, (even though the scene with her and AnnaSophia was the part that made me tear up) but AnnaSophia is an amazing actress. And same with the parents. They did a fabulous job. I really reccommend seeing it in a theater. It was worth it. It was pretty bloody, but you never really see that much. I really get a sick stomach at the sight of blood/injuries, but I didn't get that watching this, so it probably wasn't too bad. :)

It sounds really good, and I'm intending to go see it for my birthday in a few weeks.
I'm also a fan of AnnaSophia Robb. I loved her both in Bridge to Terabithia and Because of Winn-Dixie. (Not so much in Race to Witch Mountain, but the whole movie was bad. It wasn't just her fault.)

This sounds like a good movie! I really am looking forward to seeing it. It's still unbelievable that Bethany Hamilton surfs. AnnaSophia was an AMAZING pick for that! As Brynne said she was great in Because of Winn Dixie (One of my favorites)! I still don't understand why they put Carrie Underwood into the movie (???). Who did she play? And in what way was her acting terrible??

I saw this movie in Florida after surfing, and was a little freaked but it was amazing!!! I really thought the shark attack would be when she snuck out to go night surfing. :)

AnnaSophia is mine too! I guess Carrie's acting wasn't horrible, it was just pretty fake-looking. And the fact that she wore nice clothing and big earrings and her hair all done nicely when she was in Thailand after the tsunami there was a bit strange.
And I also found out that, to get the one-armed look, someone took a mold of the actual Bethany's remaning left arm (the one that was bitten) and put that on the top of AnnaSophia's arm. Then the rest of her arm was wrapped in green tape and she mostly had to keep it behind her back the whole time.
