The Chatterbox seems

The Chatterbox seems somewhat dead, so I'll do my contribution to help revive it and make my first thread in ages.

Let's talk about music.  I know we've had tons of threads about music before, but not recently, and our music tastes have probably changed a bit since then.  What are your favorite bands/musicians at the moment?  Favorite songs?  Genres?  Other things like that?  Pretty much just talk about whatever you want, as long as it relates to music.

I listen to mainly mainstream stuff. And sometimes some old songs. (thanks, mom and dad) Right now, I'm listening to Dream On by Aerosmith. Does anyone here play piano? I do. F-minor dominant chords hate me, but they've begun to warm up to me. :-) Oh, I also need help to get rid of the Performing Nervousness. Because of that evil disease, my exam and contest marks have been lower than they could have been.

Olive, a college violin student once told me that he eats a banana about an hour before he performs because the potassium in the banana helps him stay calm and not feel nervous. I don't know if there's any scientific reason that it works, but it's worth a try!

I listen to Classical, pop, rock(sometimes). Right now I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan. Oh, I play piano but not that well. I've been playing less than a year.

I usually listen to contemporary (is that correct spelling?) christian, but i enjoy listening to filmscores from like Narnia or Lord of the Rings. From the contemporary christian genre i like TobyMac, Skillet (though i think skillet is leaning more toward rock), FFH, and Tenth Avenue North. From the filmscores i like (as i said before) music from Narnia and Lord of the Rings, but I also like music from Halo, Star Trek, Harry Potter, and Star Wars. Currently, on Pandora, i'm listening to the Jurassic Park film score.

If i'm riding anywhere with my sister, or happen to borrow her iPod, I'll be listening to show tunes, without a doubt.  But I mostly listen to pop.  "Today's Hottest Music" is what the channel I normally listen to claims.  My dad and i are the huge music-people in our family, so we dominate the music.  Besides show tunes... yeah, so I know all of the songs my dad listens to, like Olive. :)  Beattles, Aerosmith, Duran Duran, Foo Fighters, Paul McCartney, ACDC, Cake, and like a thousand more!  But I'd prefer to listen to my music, even though I could sing all of his songs. ;)  I have a couple country songs, rock songs, and really random stuff: "Pants on the Ground" "Who Let the Dogs Out" "The Telephone Hour" from Bye Bye Birdie.  Yeah...........

I listen mostly to alternative pop (Mayday Parade, All Time Low, We the Kings, Forever the Sickest Kids, etc.) but I also listen to a lot of Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars. I also enjoy the local Christain rock station.

Pretty much only film scores and the local Christian station (I wake up to that every morning for my alarm, since I hate the beepbeepbeep one).

Yay, commenting on my own thread!

I listen to pretty much every genre, but avoid pop (and everything mainstream, for that matter).  I love alternative, rock, alt/indie rock, indie, folk, electronica, reggae, and a tiny bit of screamo.

I don't think it's possible for me to choose a favorite band/musician...  But I do adore Arcade Fire, Beirut, Bob Marley, Bon Iver, Bright Eyes, City and Colour, Darren Criss, Jon Foreman, Laura Marling, MGMT, Mumford and Sons, nevershoutnever!, Noah And The Whale, Regina Spektor, Slow Club, Sufjan Stevens, Switchfoot, Tom Felton, YACHT, and uhh, yeah, that's it. (ha, well, it's kinda obviously that I just scrolled through my iTunes and chose my favorites, considering those are all in alphabetical order).

Uhh, yeah.  I'm actually not in the mood to talk about music right now though.  I'll continue later.:)

I just found my old Now That's What I Call Music 4 album, which inspired me to download a Backstreet Boys album and an Aaron Carter album today.  I miss the 90's.

99.9% of my music is either (a) from a musical or (b) instrumental movie scores. The two bands that I listen to with any regularity are Oingo Boingo (Danny Elfmannnnnn) and Within Temptation.

My absolute favourite songwriter/composer is Stephen Sondheim (but y'all knew that, right?) because he is INCREDIBLY AMAZING and CLEVER and EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

My favourite (movie) composer is Danny Elfman, for very similar reasons (where Sondheim has intricate wordplay, Elfman has intricate, er, note-play, for example) and because he is the MASTER of the earworm.

There are a ton of vocalists who periodically send me into fits of fangirlish SQUEE!ing, so for the sake of time I'll just list the ones who I will NEVER GET TIRED OF LISTENING TO EVER. (note that, with the exception of BP, these are in no particular order):

-Bernadette Peters (who really should be at the top of everyone's because she is amazing)

-Neil Patrick Harris

-Danny Elfman

-Tim Curry

Sherie Rene Scott

-Glynis Johns

-Kristen Chenoweth

-pre-vocal-surgery!Julie Andrews

-Nathan Lane

-Mandy Patinkin

-Stephen R. Buntrock

-Audra Mcdonald

-Elaine Paige

-Hunter Ryan Herdlicka

with everyone else being also SQUEE!-worthy, but disqualified from NEVER GET SICK OF THEM EVER by various reasons, i.e. Patti Lupone's weird... slowy... vibrato thing, which is AWESOME some times but wearying to listen to all the time. (these include, but are not limited to: Angela Lansbury, Madeline Kahn, George Hearn, Len Cariou, Patti Lupone, Heidi Blickenstaff, Norbert Leo Butz, Idina Menzel, Elaine Stritch, Chip Zien, Joanna Gleason, etc.)

Also note that, of the first list, I have seen live/MET three (BP, SRB, and HRH) and will be seeing Elaine Paige (and Bernadette again) in May/June, because I have the MOST AWESOME MOTHER EVER.

And then, at the library someone told me they were just impressed I even knew who Bernadette Peters is, and it made me sad because it reminded me that autotune is taking over :(

And that is my two cents. I will stop now, before this develops into full-fledged ranting.

I really don't listen to much music, believe it or not. I love Symphony of Science and the LGW soundtrack, though. Because my 2 favorite songs from LGW had both involved Gemma Luna somehow, I looked her up to see what her other ongs were like. Only 2 were on the Internet; I really loved Bloom but didn't much like Fly...

Also, I plan to buy The Tragic Treasury sometime soon.

I played the piano for 5 years. I haven't played in quite a while, though; I'm just starting to do it again.

Ahem.  I was going to post on this thread, and then saw that a certain post *coughTNÖcough* had sort of summed up a lot of what I was going to say.  But I will say it anyway!

So, I like a rather wide variety of things... provided they are not pop or things of that nature.  I could rant about how much I dislike that genre, but that would not be very kind to those who enjoy that genre, and would also take up too much space.  So here are my general likes:

I like classical music.  I particularly like the Romantic period (Brahms, Schumann, Chopin, etc.) but I love everything!  Beethoven is always so wonderful, and you can't really go wrong with Bach.  Since I play violin, I enjoy listening to people like Itzhak Perlman (my idol) and Anne Sophie Mutter (more her romantic things like her Mendelssohn and less things like Mozart).  I really enjoy orchestral works, and LOVE being in an orchestra where I am exposed to a lot of beautiful works.  I also listen to the local classical radio station (I wake up to it as my alarm in the morning) and just love the music in general - the intricacy, the beauty, the emotional expression - everything!  And things in minor keys are also sure to make me squee!  (This goes for all my musical likes, though.)

I also like, in general, folk-y fiddle music.  I love to contra dance (look it up if you've never heard about it - it's similar to square dancing, but done in long lines) and I love the music that goes along with it.  I really love Quebecois music (from the Quebec area) and Irish tunes, but really anything is nice.  I've played in bands for contra dances and it has been so fun.  I really enjoy bands like Wild Asparagus, Tidal Wave, and the Red Clay Ramblers.

And last but not least, soundtracks/musicals!  These have been my latest passions!  Especially Sondheim/Bernadette Peters (thanks to TNÖ's ranting :D)!  I love Alan Menken's work and currently have in iTunes Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid, but anything by him is sure to be awesome!  I also love Elton John and Tim Rice.  But Stephen Sondheim is amazing.  No question.  His music and lyrics both are intricate and beautiful.  His songs tell the stories of the musicals really well, but also are wonderful songs alone as well.  Oh, and just a random little obsession of mine in addition to Sondheim is Les Misérables.  Talk to my parents... I've been ranting quite a lot recently...  As for favorite singers, I love Terrence Mann, Sherie Rene Scott, Bernadette Peters, Mandy Patinkin, Audra McDonald, Julie Andrews (yes, I know this sounds familiar; it's because I'm practically copying TNÖ's list), and other people I'm forgetting.  I agree with TNÖ about those people who are wonderful, wonderful, but aren't ones that I, to quote "will never get tired of listening to ever."  Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Idina Menzel (she's great for some things, but not for others), etc.

Oh, I didn't even talk about soundtracks.  Silly me.  I love composers like Ennio Morricone, James Horner, and Danny Elfman.  Soundtracks can be soo beautiful and such wonderful masterpieces!

And now that I look back on this post, I see I have forgotten something.  Going completely against everything I have just written, I love the Beatles!  I love what they do with their music, and their sound.  I don't particularly love them for their voices, though they are very unique, but I like their lyrics and what they do.  Can you give me another popular band that randomly uses a sitar in their songs?  I don't think so.  They are just so creative and inventive!  My favorite Beatles' songs include, but are not limited to: "Eleanor Rigby" (it's in a minor key, what can I say?), "Golden Slumbers", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Penny Lane", "Hello Goodbye", and "Help."

Okay, after those additions, I believe I'm done with my rant for the day.  Hope I haven't forgotten anything... :D
