Harry Potter and

Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Harry Potter and

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part the first.

So I went to the midnight showing at our theatre (which... probably was a poor decision given I had school in the morning, but still...)

I have a few things I need to complain about, and a couple of things I need to rave about, so here goes. Enter at your own risk.

Complaints and one rant:

1. Ralph Fiennes

Okay, let's get something very straight here: Ralph Fiennes is a brilliant actor. And he's good at being evil!

But.

For the love of all that is villainous, why was he cast as Voldemort?! WHY?!

I don't even...

He's completely wrong for the part! His presence onscreen fills me with unbearable rage! He hams! He hams it up for Lord bloody Voldemort!

And he's SHORT! Not that I have anything against short people but Voldemort is supposed to be freakishly tall! Not shorter than Harry is!

I told you, didn't I, that Ralph Fiennes would ruin the opening scene? He did, everyone else was brilliant (well, except the writer, who only gave Bellatrix like one line), and then he's over there doing his weird... icky breathing thing and being completely contrary to the mental picture I have of Voldemort.

And at the end, when he stole the Elder Wand! Dear lord, something like that should not be that funny!

*incoherent shrieks of rage*

2. Bellatrix

Did not get enough screen time. That is all. We'll get back to her in a minute though.

3. Helen McCroy

Is almost as bad a Narcissa as Fiennes is a Voldemort. Luckily she didn't do much other than peer worriedly over other people's shoulders, so I was able to more or less ignore the fact that she IS NOT BLONDE.

4. Andromeda Tonks

Was not in the movie. Cue "...WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN..." from Quinn and I. I was looking forward to seeing the third Black sister, thanksverymuch.

Things that made me Happy:

1. Bellatrix

Was amazing. The Malfoy Manor scene was all kinds of disturbing because of HBC's spectacular performance. Especially the torture scene, which we'll get to later.

Oh! And the owning of the snatchers was if possible made even more epic than it was in the books!

The only thing that could possibly have made it better is if *angry grumbling* Ralph Fiennes hadn't ruined the opening scene from the get go and if the writers had seen fit to give Bella more than the one line. The twisted little shipper inside of me wanted public humiliation and shame and more crazy in that scene, but nooo.

2. Yaxley

Was a very pleasant surprise. He has a nice accent, and the bit with him pursuing the trio through the Atrium, with the Undesirable #1 posters flying through the air, was a very unexpected and rather subtle Crowning Moment of Awesome.

Against all odds the movie seems to have added another Death Eater to my list of characters to fangirl at.

Also his nose was fascinating.

3. Malfoy Manor

Was one of the things I was most excited about if I'm being perfectly honest (because it breaks up the monotony of the Prolonged Camping Trip, I swear! Not because I'm evil!). And it totally outdid my expectations.

First: The snatchers were great, a perfect combination of snarkery and villainy.

Second: The look on Draco's face whilst examining Harry was so... I mean, you just want to reach through the scene and give him a big hug.

Third: Bellatrix's complete ownage of the snatchers? You know how awesome it was in the book? Yeah, the movie doubled that. At least.

Fourth: The offscreen screaming sounded bloody realistic. I mean like "My god what did they do to get Emma Watson to scream like that" realistic. There is none of this Twilight 'you know that doesn't sound like pain to me' squeaky nonsense in MY fandom, thanks.

Fifth: The tiny snippet of the actual torture itself was all kinds of terrifying and disturbing, even for me. Helena Bonham Carter is amazing. And the angle of the shots only made things worse (or better, depending on your point of view...)

Sixth: Carving "Mudblood" onto Hermione's arm. Perfection. Why I didn't think of it I will never know. And the way it was presented, after the fact with her just... lying there, completely wrung out was... wonderful in a twisted kind of way.

Seventh: HAHAHA Dobby on the chandelier!

Eight: The acting throughout this scene was spectacular. And in this I am including the earlier bits with the snatchers, and the Malfoys (well, Helen McCroy's a good actor even if she is, appearance-wise, NOT Narcissa). Also, Rupert Grint was incredible in this scene, frantic in a slightly understated way that wasn't hammy or narmy like I expected it to be, which was incredible.

Overall the whole Malfoy Manor scene was just so incredibly believable and definitely the highlight of the movie from my admittedly biased point of view. And no, I am not just saying this because It Had Bellatrix In It. I'm saying this because it really was, in my opinion, the actual best scene acting, effects, and cinematography wise.

4. Neville

"[standing up] Hey, losers. He's not here." <-- to Death Eaters inspecting the train!

This was the full extent of his screen time. It is also one of the film's Crowning Moments of Awesome.

5. Physical Appearance Throughout the Movie

I love that they apparently said, "Let's forget about Beauty Is Never Tarnished and take everyone who ought to look like they've just gone through Hades and back, and then make them look like they've just gone through Hades and back." This especially applies to Jason Isaacs, who actually looks like he's just been rescued from Azkaban and fallen out of favor with his increasingly irrational and violent boss. Also and slightly more subtly the dirt, grime, and in some cases blood which our trio never seemed to get rid of. And the lack of shaving, which my friend considered disgusting but I appreciated because, y'know, they're wanted fugitives on a prolonged camping trip and all.

6. Umbridge

Reminded everyone of our principal. Also I love Imelda Staunton, she's such a great actor.

That being said I loathe the character almost as much as I loathe Ralph Fiennes' Voldemort.

...

I think that's all.

Who else has seen it and what did you think of it? Share your thoughts! I command you! NOW!

You're absolutely right about Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort.  Considering Voldemort's the most powerful dark wizard, the only one to have ever split his soul into seven horcruxes, etc., you think he'd be a bit more frightening.  But really, I find him quite humorous and not at all intimidating.

I absolutely loved the Malfoy Manor scene.  Their house was exactly how I pictured it when reading the book.

Anyway, I went to the midnight showing last night (EPIC.) and had an amazing time with other witches and wizards.  We sang AVPM songs, dressed up, ate Red Vines, and had fun.  Tonight, I saw it again and figured it would be similar.  Turns out, I was the only person wearing a Gryffindor scarf and basically the only person who knew what a Horcrux is.  The theater was packed with annoying Muggle high schoolers who don't know a single thing about HP and just went to see the movie to be cool.  I've never been more disappointed in my life.  During the entire film, I could hear them saying "what's going on?!" and stuff like that (well, lots of stuff.  They wouldn't shut up.).  I really fit in better with true HP fans than this type of "fan".

But back to the movie, I really loved it.  They did a better job following the books than most of the movies did.  Obviously, they still had to leave lots of parts out, but if they didn't, the movie would be way too long.

The only thing that really upset me about it was that they left out everything about Dumbledore's family (especially Ariana), and they just barely touched on the fact that Dumbledore was so close to Grindelwald.  In the books, it really upset Harry that Dumbledore never mentioned any of this to him, and it made him question everything about Dumbledore.  And I find that a bit important.  But apparently the producers didn't.  And it's too late for them to try to put that into the last movie, considering the characters have already read Rita Skeeter's book.

Oh, and did any of you notice that, on Christmas, they said "Merry Christmas" to each other.  I believe in the other movies, they said "Happy Christmas".  I don't remember whether this was the first one to say "merry" or not, though...  I just found that funny.

"Happy Christmas" is more English, I believe, so it makes sense for them to say that.

This. Sounds. Epic. I now can't wait to see it. Which I won't be able to for ages because I live out of the country *screams* I am so jealous of you for being able to see it!!1! I did refrain from strangling a teacher at school who's going to go the the US soon and will see it, because magistricide = not good.

Also -- you mentioned Neville on the train talking to Death Eaters? Does this mean they show what's happening at Hogwarts during the Prolonged Camping Trip? Squee!

No, there's just the one little scene of them searching the train for Harry, after which we return to the Prolonged Camping Trip. Which means DAYD remains more or less my mental canon for what went on at Hogwarts that year.

I believe I'll be seeing it again tonight with the family (who chickened out and didn't come to the midnight showing) which should be fun.

The thing that bothers me most about the HP movies is that they don't make any sense. I mean seriously, half the time I'm like, "...Um...why are we here?" (I HAVE read the books, which make a lot more sense.) Also, I'll go, "WAIT A MINUTE WHAT ABOUT SUCH AND SUCH?!/That never happened in the books! Sue!!"

OK, done. But TNO, you never fail to make me crack up. "Also his nose was fascinating." LOL. I now want to watch DHP1 simply for the sake of staring at Yaxley's nose. And, of course, for the Malfoy Manor scene, which sounds awesome.

I firmly believe that you can't truly enjoy and understand the movies, or get the full impact, if you haven't read the books. Of course, If you read the books *too* obsessively, you probably won't enjoy them that much. It's a paradox.

Yes, very much agreed.  The day before the film came out, I gave my friend the synopses for the 3rd-6th book so she'd know since she was going to the movie.  She had only seen the first 2 movies and had not read the books.  The next day, she came to me saying, "This made no sense whatsoever!" and I had to explain who "the blond girl" was and how many Weasleys there were and who Bathilda Bagshot was etc.  But anyway...

Thanks for the review, TNÖ!  It was much appreciated.  I still have to see the movie, since I promised I'd see it with my friend who's in NY right now and can't see it with me until later.  Grrr.  I've heard nothing but praise from my friends, and the words 'epic' and 'amazing' and 'creepy,' but I wanted to hear a bit more.  So thank you!  And also YES Ralph Fiennes doesn't look enough like Voldy to me.  His looks are not as creepy.  He just has a flat nose, white skin, and really dirty, long fingernails.  And that's about it.  He's supposed to be more inhuman, more completely unrelatable (unless you're Harry...).  I've always imaged him as a tall (urgh) creepy guy with a longish white face, definitely very gaunt (*cough*) with sort of sunken eyes and a rather deathly look to him (come on, he's lost 7 parts of his soul).  Shorter than Radcliffe?  Seriously?  That's disappointing.  But I heard from a review that HBC had outdone herself again, so I really, really can't wait to see her.  I love how she portrays the role of Bellatrix, though it's nothing like my interpretation of the character.  I just love the character and the actor for their seperate ways.  Who doesn't enjoy maniacal laughter and craziness?  No one.  Right.  So, I sitll CANNOT wait to see this movie (though now I'm very sad they left out the Lupin Grimauld Place scene AND Andromeda Tonks)!

I don't find them confusing really.  But if I hadn't read the books, I'd have no idea whatsoever what's going on.

I didn't even notice Fiennes was shorter than Radcliffe. Whoops.:)

I was really looking forward to the scene between Lupin and Harry at Grimmauld Place! Maybe it'll be in the deleted scenes on the DVD... Probably NOT.

I thought it was corny when Harry said that he thought that the deatheater knew he was the real Harry Potter because Hedwig was flying near him, trying to protect him. It was because he used "Expelliarmus"!!! Come on!

Scenes with Fred and George in it were awesome. I will never forget George with a toothbrush in his ear...

I want to see it again so badly! I might go with a friend who hasn't seen it yet. I should've asked her when she was going yesturday at Church. I forgot to-- I have a short-term memory problem. But I can remember things from when I was three!

Peacing out for now,

I for one thought the movie was very good, and my favorite chareater was Dobby. SPOILER ALERT: Right now I live in India, and when Dobby died all the Indians where LAUGHING. I do not understand why people laugh at such a sad moment. It's just...just... Wrong!

My fave scene the one with Bathilda Bagshot though :)

spam thing says "ubtv" ME be TV? what that supposed to mean?

ALD, I just saw the movie in Illinois last night (November 28), and I cried when he died. Dobby and Luna are my favorite characters.
