Ski lodge The Tower <!--break-->

You are at college, and you have just finished talking to your sister. She put you in a bad mood, so you are annoyed and can't think straight. You are heading to one of your millions of classes when all of a sudden you notice a poster. It says,

Welcome to the Tower! The Tower is a challenge to test your skills in different types of situations. There are six levels, and six people are needed. You will need to pack clothes, because you will be staying overnight for several days.

Then there was a date and time and a phone number to call. You don't know what compelled you to read the whole thing, but you did. You go through the whole day without thinking about it, but you have dreams that show you are stuck in a big, 6 level Tower. You decide to take the risk, even though you don't know what you're doing.

Part 1, Day 3

AmberFox had basically been kept awake the whole night by Sempreverde. She had heard her rustling a lot, but also, once or twice, Sempreverde had cried–AmberFox had felt doing the same. The whole pressure of the situation was too confusing, and it had made her queasy thinking about Gloomy. She felt a little guilt from not getting to know xem better, and the nightmares she had–well, she didn’t want to remember. The mind makes the whole thing seem worse than it is, she kept telling herself. It didn’t help. AmberFox felt anxiety. She hardly remembered her morning, just that they had to make a stone turn bright green for their next test, and there were no instructions on how to do that. The biome would be Bog, and their task would be to change its color to green.

As they were walking towards the Tower, everyone was tense. They were wondering what was going to happen. AmberFox noticed that Luna didn’t have her hat on, but most importantly she looked like a walking zombie. AmberFox walked up next to Luna and asked, “Did you sleep at all last night?” Luna barely seemed to hear her, but right on cue they gave a huge yawn. AmberFox continued to walk beside Luna, deep in thought. It must have been even more horrible for her, especially since she was one of the first to see Gloomy, thought AmberFox. She and Luna slowly fell back from the crowd. There was a deathly silence when they reached the Tower. “Well,” said Eve, breaking the silence. “I think it’s time.” Eve didn’t sound too happy either. No one answered her. Louis put his palm against a random part of the wall. It scanned his hand, and a part of the wall opened up to a small elevator, the perfect size for all of them. There was silence still as the elevator rose up, and as Eve handed out the lunches. AmberFox noticed Eve clutching an extra one that got passed out to nobody. Gloomy was in different things. To the sketchbook xe had had, to the room xe were in, all the way to the extra, brown, lunchbag. AmberFox felt her nausea amplifying as Eve started the countdown.

AmberFox jogged into the bog, immediately feeling the air get heavier from the humidity. Most of the ground was mud, but what wasn’t covered in mud was extremely soggy. AmberFox quickly grew tired, the mud trying to suck in her feet. She rested on one of the trees there–she recognized it as Taxodium distichum; swamp cypress. She pulled some trail mix out of her bag, threw some raisins and cashews into her mouth, then started to look for a rock. Not sure how to exactly change a rocks’ color, but I’ll give it a shot, she thought. She found a rock–an impressive one, no doubt–and started to experiment with it. The rock was red–a strawberry red, like the ones that are at their ripest. Amberfox tried banging it against a cypress–didn’t help. She tried smothering it with mud, letting the mud dry. When she peeled it off, it was definitely more red-purple than red, but it was far from green. Or maybe not, she thought as an idea hit. AmberFox tried recalling the color wheel. Red and green are across from each other, and indigo and orange are between them. The rock turned purple from who knows what–that means it will probably turn some shade of blue next. This is all so confusing–why did Eve and Louis have to give us such hard tasks?? AmberFox thought. She checked the point of the sun–it looked like it was nearly noon, so she still had lots of time left. As time passed AmberFox grew antsy; the rock was a teal color, almost green but not quite. There was rustling in the bushes. As AmberFox turned around, she screamed.

Sempreverde, after the countdown, had run into the bog and quickly found a rock. Her mind wasn’t at its best, because of Gloomy, but she did remember the whole color wheel thing. She covered the rock in mud, checking the rock every so often. It started changing from red to purple. Soon enough, Sempreverde grew hungry. She ravenously ate her sandwich, stretched and started walking around one of the trees just to keep exercising. And then, slowly, she lost control of herself.

When AmberFox screamed, she recognized the figure–pale and sickly–as Sempreverde. She walked up to Sempreverde, and felt dread coursing through her. “Sem–Sempreverde?” asked AmberFox. She didn’t answer. AmberFox tried waving her hand in front of Sempreverde, and even slapped her in the face once. And she immediately regretted that. Sempreverde’s skin was squishy and moist. Semprverde turned around, vomited, and fell down, limp. “Sempreverde?! SEMPREVERDE!” AmberFox fell next to Sempreverde, checked her heartbeat, and…

It had stopped.

The world had stopped.

The world was spinning, spinning as AmberFox screamed a second time–louder.

Footsteps.

There were footsteps.

Luna and Hawkstar came running from two different directions, rocks in hand.

AmberFox turned, the world a blur.

“Poison,” whispered AmberFox, “it was poison.”

And then, the sun set. It was time to go back. AmberFox grabbed her rock, leaning on Luna and Hawkstar. When they made it back, and checked their rocks (they were all green,) AmberFox went up to Eve and told her about Sempreverde.

That night, at dinner, Eve broke the news to them. It was silent–everyone was frightened, and didn’t know what to do. They didn’t want to be next.
