Part 2, Day 1
Gloomy was drawing a very picturesque butterfly, the purple standing out against the white sketchbook paper. Xe were aware when someone sat next to xem, but xe kept drawing. Xe were aware the person was saying something, but xe needed to finish a tiny little detail…and UGH! Xe had accidentally messed it up. Xe lifted xyr head from the paper with a frustrated noise, xyr eyes resting on a girl. Xe blushed, slightly embarrassed that someone had to witness that, and said, “You said something?” The girl’s eyes looked like they had sighed, but she said, “Ciao! I’m Sempreverde, she/her pronouns. You are?” Gloomy rolled xyr eyes and said, “I don’t like talking. I’m bad at it.” Then xe hesitated and added, “Gloomy. Genderfluid, so basically all pronouns.” Sempreverde gave xem a small smile and said, “Ciao, Gloomy.” Then she laughed. “Well, if you are bad at talking, then so’m I.” Gloomy went back to drawing. The two of them sat in awkward silence, until Gloomy said, looking up with a sharp movement, “I know people who are bad at talking, but I know you aren’t.” All of a sudden xe gave an unexpected smile, and Sempreverde returned it. She shook her head. “Why are we talking about being bad at talking if we are talking?” Gloomy set aside xyr sketchbook, lied down and added, “Talking.” Xe felt Sempreverde lie down next to xem and she said, “Too much talking.” She sat up extremely fast and said, “Wait, wait. I meant too much talking the word in the sentence, not–oh, nevermind.” She lay back down. All of a sudden, a bell went off. Gloomy’s head shot up, noticing Eve waving a big bell around making a CLANG CLANG! sound. Xe noticed people, including Sempreverde, get up and walk toward her. Gloomy gathered xyr stuff, carefully closing xyr notebook so xe wouldn’t smear xyr butterfly. Then xe walked toward Eve, noticing people already socializing amongst themselves. The closest people near xem was a girl with fox ears and fox tail talking to a girl with short black hair that was partially shaved on one side. Gloomy lowered xyr head and rushed past them, and xe caught up with Sempreverde. “Nice meeting you, by the way,” xe said. Then xe gave one of xyr rare smiles. When everyone was with Eve, Gloomy shrank back to the edge of people. Xe noticed, with an internal smile, that Sempreverde did as well. “Welcome, everyone. How about introductions, to get started? I’m Eve, as you guys probably know–she/her pronouns.” Eve dipped her hat in a way of greeting. “I’m Louis, he/they pronouns,” said Louis, taking off an air hat and miming Eve. “I’m AmberFox! She/her pronouns!” said the girl with fox ears and tail. “I’m Amity, new friends with AmberFox.” Gloomy bit xyr lip. Is Sempreverde my friend? Xe wondered. Then xyr cold inner voice said, I hope not. “Also she/her pronouns,” finished Amity. “I’m Hawkstar!” called a girl with brown, coco colored hair and no shoes. “She/her pronouns.” Then she smiled, probably the biggest smile Gloomy had ever seen. Xe involuntarily did an internal eye roll. “Moon Wolf,” said a small girl with shiny, black hair. “She/her pronouns.” Moon Wolf also smiled, but with a much smaller smile than Hawkstar’s. “I’m lUnA sIlVeRmOoN, bUt YoU cAn CaLl Me LuNa,” said a person with a top hat in a crazy voice. “She/they pronouns.” Then there was a long, freezing silence. “Hi. I’m Sempreverde,” said Sempreverde, eyeing Gloomy sideways. Xe gave a small, quick nod. Then xe pinched xyrself, willing the warm feeling that started to thaw xem to go away. If the crowd had one set of eyes, Sempreverde would have looked at them straight on, like a deer frozen in headlights. She swallowed. “She/her pronouns.” Then she looked away from those invisible eyes. Gloomy’s throat felt like it was made of paper. Xe had to go next whether xe liked it or not. Sempreverde, noticing xyr hesitation, returned the firm nod right back to xem. Gloomy closed xyr eyes, took a deep breath, and spoke. “Gloomy. Genderfluid–all pronouns.” Xe stood there with xyr eyes shut tight. Then xe felt a hand on xyr shoulder. Xe opened xyr eyes, and it was in that moment, when xe looked upon the girl with a green streak of hair, the girl who decided to sit with xem, the girl who could have sat anywhere and made friends–well, xe just somehow knew xe had made a new friend. Sempreverde’s eyes seemed to say, friends? And the smile Gloomy returned said, I’d love to. Then they both laughed, like they had shared an inside joke.

Part 3, Day 1
Amity had just torn her eyes off the sight of Sempreverde and Gloomy, watching as they both gained a friend. Then AmberFox nudged her and said, “What room are you in?” “Room one” was the reply. She saw AmberFox frown. “Aw, that’s too bad. I’m room two,” said AmberFox. Then she said, “Hey, Amity. Do you need help with unpacking?” Before Amity could reply, Louis said, “We will now situate you into your appropriate dorm rooms. If you have forgotten, well, I'm about to read the names. Sempreverde and AmberFox, room two. Amity and GloomyBear, room one.” Amity studied Gloomy, her new room mate, very carefully. He seemed to be quiet–a quiet that made Amity feel…well, she wasn’t sure what. Louis continued on the list: “Moon Wolf, Hawkstar, and Luna, room three. It’s break right now–you won’t be starting on The Tower until tomorrow.” Amity’s blood ran cold. She had completely forgotten about the Tower. She wondered if it was deadly…she immediately shook that feeling off. Of course it wouldn’t be deadly! And if it was–all of a sudden, Amity’s head rang with an important question, and a fire sparked in her belly. “Eve, Louis. Everyone! What will we get if we get to the top?” Louis and Eve stole a quick glance, and the fire that was burning in her stomach got bigger and hotter. “We can’t tell you. We–” said Eve, but she was cut short by a glare from Louis. Amity, all of a sudden, had a feeling of mistrust that made her face shadow. Eve shook her head, and it seemed like she was condemning herself. “I’m sorry Amity,” she said. “Now, go enjoy your break while it lasts.” Then she winked and walked away, Louis walking silently behind her. “I don’t trust them,” Amity grumbled mostly to herself. “Me neither," said AmberFox. She put her hand on Amity’s shoulder and said, “We’ve got better things to do now, anyway. No time for grudges or mistrust.” Amity shrugged AmberFox’s hand off. Then she sat down. “Hey, AmberFox,” she said. “You wanna do some sudoku puzzles with me?” AmberFox smiled and sat down next to her, saying, “Sure.” Amity’s focus was not on the sudoku puzzles, but on everyone else. She studied them, and eventually she let AmberFox take the puzzle book entirely. Then she ripped a blank page from the back of the sudoku book, and got an extra pencil from her bag. “Be right back,” she said, slinging her bag onto her shoulder. She was about to walk away when AmberFox said, “Hey, where are you going?” Amity looked at AmberFox and said, “To…to go…find out everyone’s personality.” AmberFox smiled a slightly malicious smile and said, “I love spying. I’m coming with you.” Then the two of them started to walk, stopping feet away from the friend groups. They didn’t talk to each other–they just stood there, looking at everyone. At one point, when they were studying Hawkstar, she gave them a funny look. Hawkstar walked toward them and said, “Whatcha doing? The way you were staring at us was…creepy.” “Trying to figure you out is what we’re doing. And trying to figure out the whole lot of Lizards,” said Amity. She wasn’t sure where the Lizards came from, but she thought it was a semi-appropriate name for everyone. Hawkstar raised one eyebrow. “Lizards, huh? Well, I guess that works as a name.” She shrugged. “Anyway, count me in. Team?” she asked, putting her hand in front of her. Amity and AmberFox followed. “Team,” they said.
Luna: A funny, jumpy, a little bit crazy sort of person. Hops around to everyone, including us.
Luna ran over to them and asked, “Ooh, what are you doing?” Before anyone could open their mouth, Luna had run over to someone else.
Moon Wolf: Hangs out with Hawkstar. Thoughtful and firm.
Amity watched as Moon Wolf fitted wildflowers into each other to make a crown. When Luna ran over, Moon Wolf placed the diverse crown on Luna’s head.
Gloomy: Hangs out with Sempreverde, likes to move around a lot. Not very social, though he and Sempreverde fit together like two peas in a pod. Also, apparently, he’s a contortionist.
Amity was watching Gloomy and Sempreverde walk around talking, getting quiet when Luna ran over. All of a sudden, Amity saw Gloomy fold himself in half, Sempreverde looking with bemused horror.
Sempreverde: Hangs out with Gloomy. Very observant and creative.
Amity, studying Sempreverde, noticed her stop in the middle of her tracks. She stood there, looking at a pile of big sticks like she could do something with them. Then she pounced on the sticks, and really, extremely quickly she had made a small teepee.
Secretly, Amity added the following:
AmberFox: Really good at fitting in, and a good friend.
Amity watched as AmberFox went up to Moon Wolf and asked her some questions, then she said something and they both laughed.
Hawkstar: A very fun, clever person
Hawkstar went up to Luna and tapped her shoulder from the back, and when Luna looked around Hawkstar was already feet away. Hawkstar did this a few more times until Luna caught her, and when Hawkstar was walking away Luna secretly tapped Hawkstar’s shoulder and ran away, laughing.
This is what Amity’s notes looked like on page 486 of her sudoku book. She had barely enough space to finish, and she knew she had made good observations. Hawkstar looked over her shoulder at Amity, and asked, “Why did you want to observe people to know their personalities, anyway?” Amity blushed. ‘Observe’ sounded too much like ‘spy’, and the sentence ‘spying on people to know their personalities’ sounded like it was dumb. ‘Well, I–I thought it would be fun? I don’t know.” She had other reasons, but she wasn’t going to share them quite yet.
That night, Amity listened to the slow breathing of Gloomy as she thought of what the next day would bring. Something good, I hope, she thought as she drifted off to sleep.

Part 1, Day 2
Moon Wolf’s eyes popped open, noticing that Luna was up but Hawkstar wasn’t. She rolled around and looked at the time, the moon pendant digging into her chest. She reached for the moon, rubbing it, remembering that her sister had given it to her before her sister went away to her new home. Moon Wolf rubbed her eyes, looking at the time again, and was surprised to find it was 6:00 am. She flopped back on her bed, debating whether she should get up or not, but eventually gave up sleeping and got out of bed. She took a bundle of clothes with her to the bathroom, got changed, and put her hair in a loose ponytail. She stood in front of the mirror, her eyes slowly drifting to the reflection of the moon necklace. She eventually tore her eyes off of it, when all of a sudden someone opened the door. It was a slightly sleep-deprived Gloomy, who said hi to Moon Wolf and went into a changing stall. She walked down the hall to a dining room/living room, where she saw Sempreverde and Luna sitting on a couch. Sempreverde was sipping on coffee. The room was worn–a sort of vintage vibe rang from it. The floors were made of some sort of wood, and it had the look of once being shiny but now long walked-on. There were several pictures of Eve and Louis, and she noticed also a girl with bright red hair and a man with sunglasses and no smile in the mix, though. The portrait of the man was kind of hidden, and it seemed like no one really wanted people to notice it. There was also a blue wall clock, and it made a relaxing ticking noise. “Gloomys in the bathroom getting changed,” Moon Wolf told Sempreverde. “Thought you might like to know.” Sempreverde smiled. “Where’d you get the coffee from anyway?” she asked, scanning the room. No sign of coffee. Luna answered her. “Over there, by the picture of Eve with the green dress. There’s tea too, but it has no caffeine.” Gloomy came in, looked around at everyone but only greeted Sempreverde. They sat on the couch across from Sempreverde and Luna, and Sempreverde moved to sit next to them instead, leaving the spot next to Luna for Moon Wolf to take. Moon Wolf went over to the coffee machine, made coffee and sat next to Luna. There was a long silence where the only sound was the ticking of the clock behind them and breathing. Sempreverde spoke first, extremely quiet. “What do you think today is going to be like?” Luna shook her head and said, “Hopefully nothing too dangerous.” Their voice sounded unsure, and Moon Wolf grew a little nervous. All of a sudden, Eve, Louis, and the rest of the participants (all looking grumpy) came in. “Goooood morning, people!” Eve said. “It’s breakfast! Mag made us pancakes while you were in dreamland.” Moon Wolf noticed a young woman with red hair, and noticed she was the other girl in the portraits. “I’m Mag! She/her pronouns.” She sounded too awake, especially since she was up really early, possibly the whole night. Everyone walked toward the dining table. Mag soon dished out pancakes, offering coffee to everyone. Moon Wolf took some more. “Hey, Moon Wolf,” said Hawkstar, nudging her. “I was up late last night and I overheard Eve and Louis talking in room 4. They said something about ‘forest’ and ‘first level’ and ‘crystals’.” Hawkstar ripped into her pancakes. “My only conclusion is that the first level in this Tower is a forest, and crystals are somehow incorporated.” Moon Wolf chewed her pancake thoughtfully. “You’re probably right about the forest part, but what has crystals got anything to do with it?” Before Hawkstar could answer, Louis called attention. “Good morning, and welcome to your first day in the Tower. The first level of the Tower will be a Forest biome. You will have until dinnertime, which is 6:00 pm, to find these crystals.” He held up the brightest, bluest, tiniest crystals up to everyone. “Don’t ask me what the crystals are for or what they are–I don’t know. But I do know that if you don’t get one of the crystals by 6:00 pm, you will be sent back home. Also, the blue crystal is important later on, so don't lose track of it.” No one said anything to this. The unease that Moon Wolf was feeling grew. “Anyway, I think it’s time you get a taste of the Tower,” said Louis. “Follow me.”
Moon Wolf and everyone approached the Tower. It looked small on the outside, but it was huge, HUGE on the inside. There was a massive forest, and it was thick and dense. Eve told everyone to stand against the wall and they obeyed, and before Eve could say anything Moon Wolf asked, “What about lunch?” Eve shook her head and answered, “Lunch is not provided. Now, on the count of three, go. One…Two…THREE!” Moon Wolf took a deep breath and headed into the forest.
