How long have you been on the CB?: I started in 2018 and technically left in 2022 or 2023, but I love this type of ski lodge too much to pass up :)

Favorite part of the CB: I adore the frienships that blossom from the shared creativity. my favorite traditions are ski lodges, hay wars, and Kyngdom, and my favorite section is Pudding's Place (Down to Earth as second).

In 11 different locations on Earth, 11 humans in their teen years are looking at the Chatterbox. Everyone reading this knows what the Chatterbox is, of course: a website, but also a nebulous thing that means a whole lot to a small number of people scattered across the world. These humans were some of them, and they were waiting for a post from a C.J. Evergreen.

When the post arrived, all 11 crossed their fingers (or used various other luck-giving rituals) and began to read. Almost immediately, a jolt somewhere behind their eyes made the CBers jerk forward toward their screens, as if pulled by an invisible string. The words were glowing blue-white and bouncing before their eyes. The screen began to glitch in and out, and visions flashed on the screen, all too fast to comprehend, but the CBers all felt some combination of fear, joy, nostalgia, and excitement. Then with a great whooshing, suction-like sound, each CBer felt for the first time what it was to leave their body, and entered the glitching mass of colors and memories in the center of the screen, to the pinprick glowing white portal in the center.

In a fraction of a second, they had arrived. The trip, however, left them disoriented, as if standing up from a long journey asleep on a train, and it took a minute at least for everyone to get their bearings enough to look around.

They were in something like a void, except it consisted of a ground which stretched as far as the eye could see and was the yellow-y color of old parchment, and crunched softly under their feet. The sky was a dark red that brought to mind comforting libraries in old houses, but was decidedly unsettling as a sky color. In front of them was a large billboard reading “Cricket: the realm of the imagination”.

When the group began to feel as if their voices had no longer been left in their homes, they all began to swarm around each other, identifying themselves and adjusting to seeing their online friends as physical people.

But they also had to get used to their own selves: GloomyBear was the first to notice the large gray moth wings that emerged from Scuttles’ back and the antennae that nestled with his brown hair. “Oh heck yeah,” Scuttles exclaimed, feeling the velvety wings. “They feel so natural, like I’ve always had them.”

“Can you fly?” Luna “Moth” Silvermoon looked up from examining the pitch-black cloak that floated animatedly around her. 

“Let’s see–” Scuttles began, but their wingspan was larger than expected and nearly blew over Moth.

“AAAAAAAaaawaityesI’m FLYING!!!” Scuttles was suddenly above the group, fluttering around.

“Um, excuse me. It’s like none of you respect my personal space,” a voice coming from Moth’s direction, but apparently not from their mouth, said. Although, as Sempreverde thought, ventriloquism might not be off brand for Moth.

“Holy smokes, Nightly, why weren’t you talking to me before? Are you ignoring me? You’re not as mysterious as you look, you… uh… literal piece of cloth!” Moth tried to give a disapproving look to the cloak, but broke into a smile. “Okay, okay. I’m glad you actually talk.”

“Look, I’m as surprised as you are. I was basically just born. But yeah, I’m totally sentient, so respect my space or else,” Nightly, the cloak, visibly sighed in exasperation.

Then Luna-Starr spoke up. “Okay, but… guys, let’s think about the implications of this. I mean, we’re literally the selves of our imaginations. Someone read those forms, or our minds… how? Why? Oh man, I should’ve given myself more superpowers…” he put a hand to his forehead. 

The chaotic group momentarily looked amongst each other: GloomyBear’s bear ears, the glitching mass of question marks that had identified herself as mizuki ariadne, the fluffy blue bat that Semprevendre was attempting to catch as it flew around her, and the pterodactyl who, frankly, felt that he was being undervalued at the moment, as he was wearing a very fashionable pair of psunglasses. His name was Ptheodore.

“I mean, duh. It says, “the realm of the imagination”, right there.” GloomyBear responded, pointing to the sign above them.

A sun gleamed in the sky, GloomyBear noticed just then, white and shining and much like any other sun, but something seemed off that they couldn’t quite place. They shook their head away, and only then did Gloomy realize that rather than turning away from the sun like normal, it had mesmerized them into staring for who knows how long, and the rest of the CBers were onto another topic: The four signs hanging from– evidently– the sky. What’s New?, Cricket League, Meet Everybuggy, and Old Cricket’s library. They looked familiar to Gloomy, but… oh right, they were always there, at the top of the site. Gloomy entered the group, trying to casually absorb the conversation.

Apparently, the What’s New section had been found to contain a copy of the latest Cricket magazine and nothing else, and the others…

“It’s just a void like this one, except there’s this voice booming, ‘INSTALL FLASH PLAYER’, like, CONSTANTLY.” Luna-Starr shuddered, just having stepped out of one of the wavering portals the signs contained. “I don’t think it’s any more useful than those sections are in real life. Or, wait, is this real life, and the normal CB isn’t…?”

“Sorry,” said a voice behind them, with the apologetic air of having waited too long for a good moment to interrupt. “That was a bit of an issue when we were in the creation process.” The CBers turned around.

“Welcome, again, to the Chatterbox 2.0.”
