Music Club

So for my CBversary a few people said they wanted to do this. I am working on a Little Lost Library revival but that will probably take a while. In the meantime, here's the music club!

This is for anyone who loves music and wants to discover new artists. To join, just comment saying you want to join. Next Friday, we'll start rotating, starting with me and then in order of who commented. Anyone can join the rotation at any time! If you comment saying you want to join, you'll be added to the end of the rotation.

The way it will work is each week, the next person in the rotation picks an album to reccomend, and everyone listens to it. Once you've listened to the album, say a little about what you thought of it! Doesn't have to be too much, just something like, "I enjoyed it" or "It wasn't really for me" and maybe something like "___ was my favorite song" or whatever.

I think that's it! We'll start on the 26th :D

@all thanks for listening to sunburn! i just wanted to say something quickly because i think it's important

obviously music club is supposed to be where you give your thoughts on an album--but when you're saying things like 'i didn't like this album at all' and 'it was way too aggressive' and '5/10' it's hurtful to other people who picked this album, and really like it. i'm not trying to call anyone out but it kinda sucked to pull up this thread and see stuff like that.

if you don't like it, just say something like 'not for me but i can see why you like it' because it makes someone feel like they shouldn't share their music taste lol.

ok, new week, new album! yay!

this one isn't the Mountain Goats. i can hear your sighs of relief. it also isn't lofi indie, because that's like half the music i listen to, and im trying to diversify my taste. you know, it's ok to not listen to much of a genre, but if you hate that entire genre the problem generally lies within you.

the album ive chosen is Ants from Up There by Black Country, New Road. it's a post punk album, which is the same genre as, like, Talking Heads. lush orchestral songs with emotional lyrics. there are some other genres kickng around in there too! the intro is klezmer, which is neat, and a lot of the songs are sort of baroque pop. if you like talking heads, you'll probably like this album. if you like operatic instrumentation, you'll probably like it, and the lyrics are pretty great too! they remind me of the album Pinkerton more than anything.

the one real hurdle is the main guy's voice, honestly. he has the sort of emotional, quivering speak-singing that makes some people dislike post punk, but i think his delivery is incredible. i love his voice, you know, i wouldn't listen to the band if i didn't, but folks with more mainstream taste might find it a bit off-putting.

my favorite songs are Concorde and God Will Hunting. my least favorite is Bread Song, but if you like slowcore you'll probably be all over it, and it's still a good song.

to be clear, im personally ok with you saying you don't like it if you don't like it, but id be curious to hear about why. let me know if you like it, if you hate it, whatever! talk to you guys soon!

I always try to emphasize one lyric that does an incredible job, so ill say the delivery of "i was made to love you... can't you tell?" in Concorde is near perfection. it's desperate and real.

I didn't listen to the whole album (I have no time) but overall I'd say it was good--neither great nor awful, although I could see how it'd be enjoyable--I guess the style of music just isn't my favorite (and this is because I have weird music taste).

My feelings about this album are mixed, but generally positive! I didn't have much issue with his voice. I loved how the instruments sounded! I liked the second half of the album better than the first, generally. I think I give it a solid 7/10 overall; thank you for the recommendation.

I should mention that though I didn't have time to finish the album I did like your Mountain Goats recommendation last time! And I have two band  recs for  you, LE: The Magnetic Fields and Belle and Sebastian. Your characters Wren and Diana remind me of the latter band's song "She's Losing It."

i listen to the magnetic fields! they're my favorite kind of indie band, (it feels like you've been locked in a room with them and some instruments and they've been instructed to hurt you every way they know how... super good.) and that song is perfect for Wren and Diana, so ill definitely listen to some Belle and Sebastian. thanks!!!

i also have kind of mixed feelings about this album. it's interesting that you compare them to the talking heads because i found this quite significantly different from them, but i also find some parallels between them (i LOVE some talking heads songs, and sort of can't stand others) (i also know very little about music technically, so)

anyway! my favorite part was the instrumentation, i love the "full band" sound with horn instruments and everything!! a lot of songs seem to have unconventional melodies, which makes it interesting, but depends on my mood whether i'm into that. i also like the raw emotional vibe and lyrics. i thought the singer's voice/delivery worked well for the emotions of the music, but i'm not a fan of it personally, although i seem to be picky about very british-sounding singers... plus, i'm a mountain goats fan, so i can't exactly judge someone with a ""bad voice"" lol.

my favorite song was "the place where he inserted the blade" or "concorde", or "mark's theme" actually might be my favorite because it lets the instruments shine, idk.

not my favorite album, but definitely good, and i can see myself coming back to some songs, specifically if i'm not feeling the best and need some catharsis :') thanks for reccomending, LE!

also i just realized the title "ants from up there"probably refers to how people say the cars on land look like "ants from up there" when you're on an airplane! that's cool!

man yeah maybe it makes me a bad person but sometimes British singers make me very... angry? idk, lol, definitely the wrong word, but that's my problem with Depeche Mode, for example, so that's totally fair.

(he actually sounds even more British in the album immediately preceding this one, it genuinely makes me a little mad on that one... im half British. my mom was born in England. what is wrong with me?)

and yeah ive listened to so much weird music that i no longer think of singers as good or bad. ive brainwashed myself basically. i like Daniel Johnston.

look we're talking about music im really happy :D

Okie, the album will be Growing Up by The Linda Lindas!!! I'll write a full blurb tomorrow, but for now, I just want to say that if you listen to Growing Up (the song, not the album), I recommend watching the music video if you can!! I love it :D also, there are lots of adorable cats in it (and btw, I think Mila (the drummer) is 13/14 now; she was 8 when they started, which is crazy. Her sister, Lucia, is... uh, 17 now?? Their cousin, Eloise, is 16(?), and their friend/neighbor(? Maybe?), Bela, just turned 20 :0)

please let me know what you think! If you don't like it, that's fine, although I'd be curious as to why :) hey, that's a Linda Lindas song (why)! :P
