A dream can be a very nice thing. Sometimes it is not. But right now, it seemed to be pleasant. Floating among the clouds, flapping your arms as though they were feathered wings. Swooping down lower, you brush you feet across a fluffy creast of a white cloud. You zoom upwards again, the cloud swirling gently in your wake. You fly a loop-the-loop, giggling happily. A flock of geese burst out of the clouds and, honking madly, swerve to avoid running into you. You pause in your fun, and hover in the blue sky, watching them fly south. You let yourself sink, and land with a pillow like puff on a nice cloud. You lay back, feeling more relaxed than you have in weeks. You smile to yourself, and a face blocks your veiw of the sky.
"Hello," the woman says. "I'm Roya."
"That's nice," you mutter dreamily, and sit up.
The lady was pretty, with flowing hair that was the color of the cloud you rested on. Her eyes sparkled, and a pair of feathery gray wings flap lazily to keep her hovering just above the cloud.
"Would you like to spend a few days, or perhaps weeks in the clouds?" she asks.
"That sounds wonderful," you sigh whistfully. "If only you were real."
"Oh, but I am real. At least, I am here. Will you come back?"
"Ok," you agree.
"Here." Roya hands you a small glass vail, filled to the cork with a bright blue liquid. You accept it, and ask, "What is it?"
Roya answers, "it will give you your wings, and transport you to DreamLand. Drink it immediatly upon waking. See you soon." And with that, she wisks away.
You study the vail, and then lay back down and close your eyes.

No, I am not Rainbow.
*yawns thoughtfully*
Hmmm, I need to start writing the begining of this ski lodge.
(June 8, 2023 - 3:29 pm)
wait wait wait you're Hawkstar, aren't you??
(June 8, 2023 - 3:36 pm)
How'd you guess!!!!???? I thought I was being so sneaky... I am Hawkstar.
(June 9, 2023 - 7:20 am)
well, I was looking through the people who had joined this ski lodge, trying to see if one of their writing style's matched up with yours, and I was thinking that you might be Hawkstar -- and then I saw that in your reply to Scuttles on page 1, you accidentally used your usual location ("ReAdInG iN a TrEe") as Roya, which confirmed my suspicions. Anyway, you did last a lot longer than I did in my ski lodge -- I think I was guessed on the third try, maybe? XD
(June 9, 2023 - 9:45 am)
Darn. I was determined to be the one to guess you.

In ten different places, ten different CBers awoke with a start, having dreamt that they had fallen through a cloud. Going down, down, down, the bottle of blue liquid still clutched in their hand. But then they awoke, quite safe, and still holding the bottle. Most regarded it with surprise, but a few nodded, pleased and satisfied. And all uncorked it, and downed the contents. Some, a bit hesitant to trust a dream, others, right away, because this was something that they could trust. Once the blue liquid was gone, all the Cbers began to feel dizzy, and sudden fatigue overtook them. They fell, once again, down, down, down, into darkness. But then-
Light
Sound
A twitching pain near shoulder blades
And full sight
Peri blinked, and looked around. She seemed to be standing in a small park, with benches and trees around her, and a fountain in the middle of a small square. She was on a cobblestone path, and appeared to be alone. She glanced down at herself, expecting to see her blue pajama pants and tank top, but instead found she was wearing her usual pink T-shirt and shorts. Then she reached a hand around to scratch her itchy shoulder blades, only to find a soft, feathery surface producing from her back. A bit surprised, she twisted her head, and caught a glimpse of wings, large and white, and feathered. Delighted, she found she could move them, and Periwinkle flapped them, smoothly taking off from the ground. Peri flew a circle around the fountain, and then whooshed down the cobblestone path testing her speed and duration.
The path twisted and curved in unexpected places, so Peri found herself quickly screeching to a halt before running into a tree more than once. After a short while, though, she came out of the trees, and into a small square, with small houses painted in pastel colors, and another fountain burbled in the center. The houses made square shapes around the small square, except for the wall of trees behind Peri, and a small opening where the path continued on the other side of the square. Peri landed. This square wasn’t empty, it was filled with 9 other CBers, all sporting wings that they certainly hadn’t had before, much like herself. They all stood or sat in various places, as though they had been dropped from the sky. Some blinked confusedly, and others looked around with interest. There was a sound of flapping wings, and a woman swooped down from the sky. She landed close to Peri, and she saw her bright smile.
“Hello, all,” the lady said cheerily. “I am Roya. You have met me before, quite recently, I believe.”
There were murmurs of recognition through the assembled CBers, and Peri recognized her as well. It was the woman who had given her the bottle that had given her wings.
“Well, I am glad you all could make it,” Roya said sweetly.
(was there a choice?) Peri wondered. She remembered accepting quickly, not really believing that it was real.
“I am sure that many of you will want to be off, exploring DreamLand’s varying landscapes, or testing your wings, but for now, I would like you to take a few minutes to explore your mini house. It will be your home for the next week or so. Okay?”
“Uh huh,” and “okay” was said among all.
“Good," the white hair lady said. “Seadragon, your house is that one down at the end, on the left, the turquoise one. Darkvine, yours is the one opposite, the green one.”
The two CBers separated themselves from the crowd and flew over to their houses, alighting on the top step of each.
Roya went down the list of CBers, and they separated themselves from the crowd and went to their houses.
Oldish Books went to the purple house with Silver Crystal and Pangolin.
Scuttles went to the red one with Ruby Moonnight, and Peri flew with Wildsong to a pink house. Hawkstar decided she would bunk alone, and went to the yellow house.
Peri landed at the foot of the three steps, and walked up them. Wildsong followed behind, smiling slightly.
“I like having wings,” she said to Peri.
“Yeah, it’s pretty cool,” Peri agreed.
Wildsong rested her hand on the doorknob, and turned it. Peri stepped into the house behind her, and closed the door. The room was small, but cozy, twin sized beds at opposite ends of the room, with feather comforters and plump pillows. A rug was in the middle of the room, and the floor was wooded. Bookshelves full of books stood near the door, along with a desk. Two windows were by the beds, and a door at the far side of the room led into a bathroom.
“It’s nice,” Peri said.
“Yep,” said Wildsong.
They stood there a moment longer, and then turned and went back outside.

Silver stood beside Pangolin, waiting for all the others to assemble. Parody had shown up late, and Hawkstar had, a bit reluctantly, agreed to share her mini home with Parody. Roya was currently handing out maps to all the CBers, and she fluttered up to Silver and Pangolin.
“Do you two mind sharing a map? We are one map short, but I will be able to get you guys separate maps tomorrow.” Roya asked.
Silver glanced at Pangolin, who shrugged. “I don’t mind,” she said. “If you don’t mind me by your side the whole day.”
“I don’t mind,” Silver assured, and Roya handed Pangolin the map.
Unfolding it, Silver shuffled closer so the both could see the wide paper. Pangolin struggled to hold it wide enough, so Silver Crystal took the right side.
“Wowzer,” Pangolin said. “DreamLand is BIG!”
“Where should we go first?” Silver wondered, scanning the expansive surface of the map.
“Hard to say,” Pangolin replied.
Silently, the two looked over the map, until their eyes rested on a spot labeled, Dream Carnival. It was just on the other side of the woods near the edge of the map.
“Let’s go there,” Pangolin suggested, jabbing a finger at the spot.
“Okay, sounds good to me,” Silver agreed easily.
Glancing around, she noted that all of the CBers were out of their homes, looking at their maps.
“WELL THEN LET’S GOOOO! “ Pangolin launched herself awkwardly into the air, straightened herself, and then flew up and over the trees.
“Where are you two going?” Silver turned to see Scuttles with Reuby Moonnight behind her.
“Dream Carnival,” she told them. Scuttles nodded thoughtfully, and then turned to Reuby.
“I think I want to go,” they told her. “Want to come?”
“I guess,” she said grumpily.
“Cool!” Scuttles seemed unperturbed by Reuby’s grouchy attitude, and grinned at Silver.
“We are joining you!” they said cheerfully.
“Can we come?”
Silver looked to see Wildsong and Peri. She was starting to feel slightly overwhelmed.
“Sure!” Scuttles answers happily. “The more the merrier!”
“Why don’t we all go there?” Roya had apparently been listening, and she went over to each of the remaining CBers to ask them if they wanted to go to the carnival.
Soon, they were all soaring through the blue sky above the green tree tops. A few did flips and dove into the trees, only to burst back out with a flurry of birds chasing them. Silver opted to stay in the sky, safely flying straight, until she was certain that she could control her flight better.
Their soaring adventure was over in about ten minutes, and they alighted at the edge of the forest, on a small dirt clearing, outside two open gates. Pangolin was already there, and she looked thoroughly surprised that everyone had followed her.
“Alright,” Roya said. “There aren’t any rules, aside from you cannot leave the fair in any direction besides this gate. Don’t go farther than the walls. Don’t go around the walls. It is too dangerous.”
“Okay,” most of the CBers called back. Seadragon and Reuby folded their arms and kept quiet.
“Go have fun!” Roya waved her arms toward the gates, and Silver went through them with the rest of the CBers.
Silver was shocked to find many people about. Children eating cotton candy, adults acting like kids on roller coasters and other rides. Nobody seemed to be together, but all seemed to be having fun.
“This is DreamLand,” Roya whispered next to Silver. She turned to look at her hostess.
“Many come here when they sleep. Don’t be alarmed if they disappear suddenly. It just means they woke up.”
“Interesting,” Silver murmured, nodded thanks to Roya for the explanation, and made a beeline for the merry-go-round.
Waiting in line, Silver took a stick of cotton candy offered to her by some man in a pinstriped suit. Taking a bite, Silver closed her eyes with pleasure. It tasted really good. Usually, cotton candy was too sweet and it made her gag, but this tasted like honey and roses and chocolate all mixed as one.
Once she got on the ride, she chose a silver and blue mare, who looked as though she would take flight, galloping into the air, or just around the fairgrounds. Hopping on, Silver remembered Mary Poppins, and wondered with a giggle if the mare would take her for more than a ride in a circle.
As the sun rose in the sky, got to the noon point, and then started to sink to the west, the CBers had fun and played games and won prizes, ate candy and snacks, and rode plenty of rides apiece.
When sunset came, the fair grounds were empty, aside from the CBersv who gathered at the Ferris Wheel at the back of the Carnival to ride it one last time, all together. Silver sat with Darkvine and Hawkstar, Oldish Books next to her. The sunset was glorious, but when their bucket reached the top, Silver noticed something she hadn’t noticed before when riding this ride. Over the wall, there was no ground. Just a straight drop down. Stretching, Silver Crystal peered even farther over, and saw the distant lights of a city far below. Sitting back, she realized that they really were in the clouds. How interesting.
“Ohhhh, look!” Oldish Books pointed toward the sun. Silver looked, and saw a few black shapes galloping through the sky. One came close, and all the CBers gasped and ahhed. It was a horse of magnificent size, an inky black, with shimmering sparkles like stars in the mane and tail. Streaks of silver riveted through the pelt, and the horse let out a loud whiny, swooping over the Ferris Wheel.
“Get away!” Roya came streaking out of nowhere, her hair seeming to glow in the half light.
The horse reared in mid air, and then galloped away in the sky.
“Why’d you do that?” Darkvine asks.
Silver realized the ride had stopped, and their bucket was still at the highest point.
“Because,” said Roya, speaking so all of the CBers on the Ferris Wheel could hear. “That was a Nightmare. They are bad omens, and they can lure you in DarkDream. Do not ever follow them, and never go to unmarked areas. DarkDream is part of DreamLand, and it surrounds SweetDream, the land we are in now. Never venture beyond. The evil there is strong, and It can overcome the strongest mind. Understood?”
There were murmurs and whispers, and nervous shufflings.
“Come on,” Roya said finally, “the Nightmares just come out at night, and we are far too close to the edge of SweetDream for my liking. Let’s go to the square and call it a night.”
CBers stood in their buckets swaying a little, and flew into the sky, following Roya back to the houses. A few followed quickly, others glanced curiously back at the flying Nightmares. Pangolin flew beside Silver.
“How could something so beautiful be so evil?” Pangolin wondered.
“The most evil things can be the most charming and beautiful,” Silver quipped.
“True, true,” Pangolin agreed.
Once they reached the square, everyone disappeared into their houses, alone or with friends. When Silver got settled in bed, she tossed and turned, feeling unsettled by the Nightmares, but finally drifted into an uneasy sleep.
Somewhere, in one of the houses, someone lay awake, thinking of the Nightmares as well. They did not like how the horse had called with their mind to them, urging them to come join the rest of the horses. They still felt the Nightmares calling, and though they tried to ignore the calls, they finally gave up. They rose from bed, and slip quietly out the door.

whoa this is so good!! I love the fun, whimsical vibes in this part -- the fairground sounds so fun! And the Nightmares is such a cool concept -- I'm certain it'll come into play later.
And, oh gosh, it looks the murderer's been chosen... :0
Wonderful writing! I can't wait for the next part :D
(June 15, 2023 - 7:00 pm)
Oh my goodness! I was honestly so worried that I was going to die in this part given how many times I was mentioned. I'm still thinking that maybe I'll die in the next part...
Since it says I was asleep and the murderer was awake I can safely say I am not the murderer. Although that only makes me think more that I'll die soon. Either way, your wiring is so fun! I love the setting and the concept of Nightmares. Can't wait to see what happens next!
