idk, post song lyrics here. Something you find relatable, catchy, whatever's stuck in your head rn, literally anything. Try not to make it too long and maybe post the name of the song and the artist as well so if someone is interested they can check out the song too.

I can't help the fact I like to be alone

it might sound kinda sad but that's just what I seem to know

...

now I'm sitting here crying in my prom dress

I'd be the prom queen if crying were a contest

...

feelings are all around

how did I get here I ne-ed to kno-ow

I guess I maybe had a couple expectations

thought I'd get to thembut no I didn't

guess I thought that prom was gonna be fun

but now I'm sitting in the corner and all I wanna do is run

...

I keep collections of masks upon my wall

to try to stop myself from revealing it all

affecting others is the last thing I would do

I keep to myself though I want to break through

I hold so many small regrets

and what-ifs down inside my head

...

my demeanor is often misread

yesss her music is so good!!! Cliché is stuck in my head rn... prob cuz I was just karaoking to it XD. I can't decide if I like that one or Prom Dress better (Prom Dress is the one that got me into her stuff too)! Do you have a favorite song by her?

I know you think I got it all figured out cuz

I walk around with my head in the clouds but

I'm just a boy with his heart pouring out of his head

I wish you've seen the pain that I've seen and

All of the times I spent being not me and

I hope you know it's not always happy in my head

...

If you really wanted I could let you inside

All my friends have () friends

They're so good at making friends

I'm so scared of caving in

Is that entertaining yet

...

Somewhere in the universe

Somewhere someone's got it worse

Wish that made it easier

Wish I didn't feel the hurt

...

So if I do not find somebody soon

I'll break up into smithereens

And spew my tiny symphony

All up and down a city street

...

So this could be the death of me

Or maybe just a better me

...

I may not be there mentally

But you could be the remedy

So let me play my violin for YOU

no town more barren than ours now

no haven safer than the one they tore down

no greater love than to lay my life down for a friend

no pleasure sweeter than to see the credits clear through to the end

nobody knows where the lone wolf's gone

and no one sees him sitting camped out on the front lawn

we played for you, yet you would not sing

none of you are gonna get away with anything

AMNDSJDFNDJKGNDXOGTLDR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 THE MOUNTAIN GOATS I AM HYPERFIXATED ON THIS FROGGING BAND RN AND NO ONE UNDERSTANDS AND THEN I COME HERE AND SEE THEIR LYRICS!! :D

and not even to their most popular songs too?! thank you so much. i am OBSESSED with the talahassee album right now... ugh the doomed love... and i just listened to the goths album as well! i haven't even gotten halfway through their discography though, it's insane how much there is. and idk if you know but a bunch of famous ppl are fans of them-- john green, stephen colbert, lynda carter possibly, the governor of connecticut...

i actually just finished a painting partially inspired by one of their songs!! i don't think this is the thread for it but i will be posting on the art thread soon!

if these are, like, the only songs you know by them... heh, well. :)

that's totally sweet, man! i just got into them like a year ago! their discography is immense, it's crazy.

i've listened to all the studio albums, and most of the ep's and tapes.

tallahasse was the first i heard! it's beautiful, and tragic, and HILARIOUS. if you liked it, then you should probably also know that there's a bunch of other songs writtenbefore the album about the same couple. they're older though, so they sound very different. then i think i listened to heretic pride second, and it genuinely made me cry, like, wracking sobs. 10/10.

then i listened to the sunset tree. and then beat the champ, and then transcendental youth. and then... the rest of them.

at first i hated the older/lofi stuff, but it really grew on me! the lyrics are so personal, and raw, and universal. i love the cassette tape hot garden stomp, you can find a recording of it, and i pray every night for a re-release! it's hilarious, and awesome. i also love black pear tree, which was a collaboration with kaki king, who i also love. 10/10, again.

have you listened to any compilations like ghana or bitter melon farm? i love some of those too, especially songs like golden boy, going to maine, no, i can't...

then there's we shall all be healed (SOBBING), life of the world to come, bleed out (AWESOMENESS GIVEN AUDITORY FORM)...

and all hail west texas, or the coroners gambit, so many....

JD's lyrics stick with me. as a christian and a queer person. i know he isn't queer, but so many lyrics can be applied. (you can't tell me what my spirit tells me isn't true/ can you?, you can't judge us/you're not the judge!, you just can't do/ what your body wasn't meant to.)

it's beautiful. it's all so beautiful. i'm glad to be able to talk to someone else who knows what i'm talking about.

"hilarious" is such an interesting way to describe talahassee, considering the dark themes, but i think i get what you're saying-- the unconvential ways of talking about things is kinda funny in a way.

unfortunately i haven't listened to a lot of what you mentioned, i'm weird and like to be in a certain frame of mind when listening to new music (even from a band i'm really into) so it'll prolly take me a while to listen to it all. i did listen to we shall all be healed yesterday though, and really enjoyed it! "linda blair was born innocent" was my favorite song.

weirdly, i don't remember if i heard sunset tree or talahassee first, but i only really got into them when listening to the podcast "i only listen to the mountain goats" (and subsequently, all hail west texas). i've also listened to jenny of thebes and life in the world to come, whch may actually get me to read those verses in the bible so i can understand it better lol.

it is really interesting how many TMG fans are queer, Christian or not (although afaik the fanbase is not so much overwhelmingly Christian as much as grappling with Christianity, whether that means believing or not). personally i did go to church as a kid but wasn't really raised to believe, and i've always been passingly interested in the nature of religion as an outsider. also, i kinda lied when i said no one understands my love for TMG in my original post-- i did recently find a fellow fan at my school, who is also queer and interested in religious symbolism, and they're very cool.

and yes, JD is such a good lyricist-- i'm really into lyrics in general and i love how much interesting stuff there is to geek out about in his songs. i'll probably update when i listen to more!

P.S. as i'm about to post this, my dad put on a video of TMG playing at KEXP b/c he insists on being interested in my music taste (and i thiiink he likes them)... they're playing "make you suffer" and my dad said "oh that's nice, he's gonna make me supper" HAHAHa

well that was a lot. sorry to anyone else reading this <3

i think so many tmg fans are queer because JD focuses on outsiders a lot. he was an outsider in real life, for different reasons, but the feelings in the music are applicable in tons of ways.

and the fanbase is less Christian, yes. but i'm both because i just HAD to be different.

"gonna make you supper" sounds like a weird al parody song of the mountin goats and that would be incredible.

tallahassee is definitely really funny to me. sad too! but funny. the bluntness, and the flowery language mixed with petty insults, like that line in old college try. (in the way those eyes i've always loved illuminate this place/ like a trashcan fire in a prison cell) that line in particular always sounded like a sick burn the speaker came up with for his wife. if the speaker in that one is the guy! that's another cool thing, with all the alpha couple songs. it's not always clear whether the guy or gal are talking. and no children is a riot.

and tmg songs do what contemporary christian music very rarely does, in my opinion. it questions God, and approaches religious topics from a fresh perspective. it's written by a guy who considered himself an ex-catholic when he started making music but now freely admits to praying to jesus. it's very interesting.

forgot to add: by far the most tragic thing on tallahassee is the fact that even by the end, when the couple absolutely hate each other, and themselves, their love never really dies. it's still there, but now it's mixed in with all this hate.

I've listened to one of their songs! "Thank You Mario But Our Princess Is In Another Castle," I think it was called. LE recommended it to me once, so I tried it. It was kind of nice - not what I usually listen to, but interesting :)) Maybe I should listen to some more of their songs, do you guys have any that you would especially recommend to begin with?

i mostly listen to songs in albums. if you want to get started using an album, i first listened to Tallahassee, and it got me hooked (plus it has the one song that got really popular on it), but the band itself recommends The Sunset Tree as the first album you should listen to, and i see no problem with that either. (tw: deals with the abuse john darnielle suffered at the hands of his stepfather. nothing graphic, but it's good to cover all the bases.) if you're more into lo-fi, maybe start with the coroners gambit? if not, probably don't listen to that one first, it might turn you off them for good.

their musical style has changed a LOT, multiple times. plenty of fans only like certain "eras" of their music, but i think it's all good in it's own ways!
