-Silver Crystal-
It had not snowed for a long time. For almost a month, the ground had been a pale brown-green, hard and frozen. The days had been icy. The sky was a dull leaden gray, silent and empty.
One morning, though, the clouds swept away, revealing a dazzling, snowswept world. The trees looked like a network of fine lace. The woods sparkled in the sunlight. Each tiny crystal in the fluffy piles of snow looked, if you saw it from a certain angle, like a rainbow, bending the light into pure pastel colors like a prism.
Deep in the woods stood a tall girl. She had a long, silvery dress that sparkled like the snowflakes. Her eyes were a dark gray, almost black, and her hair was like a dark waterfall. The snow suited her - she looked as if she belonged in this winter wonderland, the way a fleet deer belongs in the forest or a powerful hawk belongs in the air.
She stood there regally, with a quiety, poised air. As she turned slightly, the light picked out a delicate crown hidden in her hair, with a sudden flash of multicolored light. The crown held a perfectly cut jewel, a crystal of a pure silver color. It caught the light and separated it into a thousand rays of gold and scarlet and violet, just the way the snowflakes did.
She looked at the woods with a quiet pleasure bubbling through her. This was her handiwork. She had cast the spell that had brought the snow. It was wonderful to create something beautiful like this, she thought - to come to a bare, icy world and transform it into this sunlit forest. She paused a moment for a last look. Then she disappeared, among the snowy, tall trees, never to return - until next winter.

-Lyre-
Silence and peace reigned over the little library. Dust motes danced in the rays of sun that filtered through the windows. Everywhere there were tall, dark wood bookshelves, stuffed with old, faded books with yellowed pages.
In a corner of the library a girl stood browsing the shelves. Behind her was a window that looked out on the parking lot and the glorious autumn trees beyond, flaming trees of scarlet and gold. The girl raised her eyes from the shelves every now and again before turning back to the shelves.
She was slim and slight, dressed in close-fitting, plain bluejeans and a heather-colored sweater. Her hair, which was in a long braid hanging carelessly over her shoulder, was thick and brown. She had piquant, slightly irregular features, and shy brown eyes that lit with quiet happiness when she saw an interesting book on the shelves. Around her neck she wore a long necklace of deep blue beads, the color of lapis lazuli.
She hurried to a seat and curled up, settling in with a sigh of satisfaction. For a moment she gazed out the window at the autumn afternoon. Then she turned to her book and lifted the faded cover with slender, delicate hands. The pages were crumbling and ancient, she saw as she gently turned them, but they spoke of adventures she longed to have and people she longed to meet. And soon she was among them, at least in imagination, alone in a corner of the dusty little library with the mahogany shelves and the musty books and the brilliant autumn afternoon outside.

Here at last is Periculosa's! Yours and Mira's are coming up.
-Periculosa-
The sun was settting. From the top of the hill Periculosa could see the entire sky, like the easel of some invisible painter. She flopped down in the cool clover and lay on her back, her clear eyes fixed on the sunset. Her face seemed to be glowing, just like the sky. She loved the sunset, and up here, on the hill, with the world spread out below her, she felt free. Freer than she had ever felt in the crowded, cramped little town she lived in. Up here she was alone. Only the wind and the sky saw her.
A banner of gold unfurled along the horizon, and the clouds turned a vivid, pulsating scarlet. The sudden color and fire sent a thrill pulsating through her. She got up abruptly and stood there, head thrown back, a proud, tall figure silhouetted against the backdrop of vivid color that matched her personality so well. Every fiber of her being was responding to the beauty before her.
She was tall and striking, especially in the intense yet faint light. She had long dark hair, that was loose and blowing around her face. Her eyes, stormy and dark and surrounded by thick black lashes, were her most expressive feature. You could tell at a glance what she was feeling by looking at them; and just now they were glowing with an uplifted, exultant light.
Gradually the sky faded. The flame in the sky dimmed to a cool, dusky amethyst. The air was cool and soft.
Periculosa's tense figure relaxed. She looked around at the hills, which already seemed to be asleep under their thin veil of dusk. It had been a wonderful sunset. The afterglow of its thrill was still on her face, and it was with a light heart that she set off down the hill on her way home.
