Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

~ski lodge~&

~ski lodge~

You walk into the library, shivering in your rain-drenched coat. The clerk, a friendly young woman with dark hair, waves and calls hello. You return the greeting with a fleeting smile and disappear into the shelves of stories, walking toward the section for your favorite genre.

You run your fingers along the many-colored spines, twisting your head sideways to read titles. A thick blue book catches your eye, and you reach up and pull it out. It falls open where a creamy white envelope is tucked inside.

Curious, you set down the book and flip over the envelope. Written on the back, in spidery black cursive, is your Chatterbox name.

You pause. Look up, around. The library is mostly deserted today: a small boy reads picture books while his mother peruses the romantic comedies, the young clerk talks to a soft-spoken old man in a fedora.

Did someone put this envelope in the blue book on the off chance you'd pick it up? And if they did, how'd they know your CB name?

Whoever they were, though, they clearly meant for you to have this. You open the envelope and unfold the letter tucked inside.

Dear Reader,

You've been chosen for a two-week stay at the Manor, which is a very old, very large house surrounded by the lovely -- but sometimes dangerous -- Twilight Woods. It's located conveniently outside the Realms of Possibility, just through the door that has appeared inexplicably nearby your current location.

You, and the nine other recipients of this letter, were chosen for your artistry, whether you're a writer or a painter or a musician, or just a person who likes to read books. This vacation is a chance to simply imagine, somewhere peaceful and somewhat magical, somewhere where space and time (and homework) is irrelevant.

The Manor has, quite possibly, everything you can dream of within it, and a few things you can't. Even I don't know every room in the Manor, and I've lived here my whole life.

What I do know, however, is that there's a vast library for all your book-devouring needs, an ancient piano that needs someone to play it, and a guest room waiting for your (hopefully book-stuffed) suitcase.

I do hope you'll come.

My friends Magpie, Jacques, Persephone, and Day, and myself will be waiting to welcome you.

Yours,

Sable

You look up, and a door has appeared inexplicably nearby. It's very unassuming. Dull, darkish wood, a brass handle. It doesn't look anything like the door to another world.

You linger for a bit, undecided. Do you accept the odd, magical invitation from a stranger and go into another world full of unknown dangers?

You're a CBer. Of course you do.

You open the door.

~~~
Hello! This, as you've gathered, is a ski lodge. My first, in fact, so I'll be limiting the number of lodgers to 10, so I have less people to deal with. That includes AEs (each CBer can bring up to 2 AEs). No CAPTCHAs, please.
There are already like 7 spots filled up (sheesh) so instead of being timely and filling out my form without reserving, I'm going to reserve a spot, if I can, and maybe post my sheet later? If not later, then later-later.
Whenever it would be mentioned afterwards, I’d go numb again and painfully go through the memories I have of them. I’d try to avoid the subject.
Name: Darkling
Gender: Hahaha! Anything goes in this crazy game. No, not life. Poker! I don't know how to play poker, so the rules are they/them/whatever! They are also mixing up pronouns with the rules to a game you never knew, and frequently disregarding grammar!
Personality: A bit insane, but mostly in a charming way, or so I like to think, reckless, impulsive, weird, morbid, and occasionally British but not always.
Appearance: Ah, my least favorite part, I don't know why. Short choppy dark hair, freckles, golden eyes currently, sharp leetle teeth. Usually wearing dark pinstriped suits with multicolored polka-dot ties, often smiling creepily for no reason or staring intently at something no one else can see.
Luggage (which will be magically transported to your room before you arrive): Oh, I'm so tired of packing and overpacking . . . let's keep it semi-simple: A green ceramic plant pot shaped like the head of an owl with a slightly dead fern in it, a statuette of an armchair, a plush corgi stuffed animal with a name-tag that reads "Ambiguous Fluffe", a harmonica in the key of A major, a pointy umbrella (it has umbrellas printed on it) in case of rain, or shine, or anything really, and finally my favorite lamp to keep me company. It is aquamarine with a gold base and gives off a lovely yellow glow, if anyone was wondering. It also requires no electricity.
Introvert or extrovert: Introvert, but really being utterly mad is more fun with an audience.
Are you a writer, a reader, an artist, a musician, or a combination thereof?: Writer of short fiction in which most recently a boy had his name stolen and was replaced by a shadow, Reader of many things as long as they are not true things, and a Musician who plays the guitar, drums, piano, and viola, although the last one I really can't play very well.
Favorite book: Well I can't choose just one, and I can't choose just one that's also child-appropriate, so we'll say fantastical comic books (not graphic novels, necessarily, comic books) with dark undertones.
Favorite color: The color of the ooze dripping from an inky deathcap mushroom.
What's something you could be caught saying?: If I had a nickel for every time ____ happened, I would only have  _______ nickels, which could buy me  ______.  (Often this could be said in the context of just about anything, and the number of nickels doesn't even have to be a number.) That, or quoting quotes that I completely made up. Example: "If all the world were in the eye of a needle, well then, I guess we'd be rather small." -- Hawthornicus, 24th century Italian poet/professional bonsai trimmer. How wise.
Reaction to someone else's sudden death (shortened parantheses version): Stare, contemplate, offer clipped condolences to those crying out of politeness, and in my head think "hmmm well tragic I suppose but I didn't really know them" or "whodunnit . . . what an odd word, is that a word?" or "everything dies sometime, and becomes food for other things; speaking (thinking) of food, I'm rather hungry", et cetera.
Other: Sorry for the absurd length of this thing, but I can at least hope it is an enjoyable read.
