Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

You sort through the letters you got in the mail, feeling more and more exhausted as you. There are bills to pay, advertisements to throw away, and magazine subscriptions to renew. You wish you could take a break from everything.

With perfect timing, you throw away a clothing store advertisement to reveal a shiny, brightly pamphlet. In big, beautiful yellow letters reads 'Need a break?'

"I absolutely need a break," you mutter to yourself, and begin to read.

DAY THREE, Part One

The pond/lake next to the Lodge looks beautiful in moonlight, but nobody would dare to go swimming at night. The chances of a bear attack are far too high.

--

The next morning came quickly. It felt strange to be served food by Fauna, rather than Aspen, but the guests knew they’d have to get used to it. Breakfast was going by mostly quietly, when suddenly Fauna blurted something.

“I figured it out!” She yelled.

“Figured what out?” Luna asked.

“I know what killed Aislynn Lynx!” Fauna said. “I figured it out!”

“Heart attack, right?” Norwood said. “That’s what seemed to be the case.” But Fauna shook her head.

“No, no, it wasn’t a heart attack. It was an air embolism!” Fauna said. “Whoever killed her must have injected them multiple times with the syringe, which was full of air. If they injected air directly into one of Lynx’s arteries, it could have easily caused them to go into cardiac arrest.”

“And if Lynx was alone in the woods, nobody would have been able to find them in time,” Kei muttered. “Hmmm.”

Norwood rolled his eyes. “Oh, please, that’s ridiculous! I’m sure it was just a heart attack. Now come along, y’all--I’ve got a great activity planned for today!”

Norwood gave no time for the guests to protest, and so they followed him outside the Lodge. It was a beautiful, bright morning, and the guests were still all in a relatively good mood.

“Well, at least we know that whoever stole the syringe is the killer,” Neverseen whispered to her AE, Glimmer.

“Nuh-uh, what if the murderer has an accomplice?” Glimmer responded.

“I guess that’s possible, but I don’t feel like it's the right answer,” Neverseen said. Glimmer was about to respond when Norwood suddenly stopped in front of them.

“Here we are, everyone!” Norwood stretched out his arms, as if he were trying to hold the entire sky. The view behind him was breathtaking--the residents felt as if they could see the entire world from up here.

“Uh, this is cool, but what exactly are we going to do?” Gillian asked. They sounded a little concerned.

“Landscape painting!” Norwood responded. “Orion, would you please pass out the supplies?”

The guests noticed that Orion had been carrying a large bag with him. Xe pulled out enough paint, paintbrushes, canvases, and easels for all of the guests. Kitten was fairly certain it was impossible for all those items to actually fit in the bag, but she tried not to think too hard about it. At least there was enough for everyone, even if it meant the laws of physics had been broken.

The guests all did their best at painting the view in front of them--well, until Norwood vanished and they realized they had very little supervision. Glimmer and Onyx tried to splatter each other with red paint, Orson declared that he would rather write a script, and the rest of the guests tried to figure out why Norwood was acting so weird. They couldn’t figure it out, but they knew he was up to no good.

Eventually, Norwood returned, and he guided all the guests back to the Lodge. They had a quick lunch, and afterwards were granted an hour of free time. Neverseen once again kept track of everyone’s whereabouts.

Bakerloo, Quill, Neverseen, Kitten, and Kei all went to the library. Glimmer, Onyx, and Gillian hung out in the Lodge, and Gillian did their makeup for them. Luna, Majestic Mary, Silver Crystal and Nerd went for a walk in the flower gardens next to the Lodge. Ace, Sterling, Skip, and Princess Juniper went swimming in the indoor pool. Orson was back in his room, writing.

Kitten took Bakerloo, Quill, Neverseen, and Kei to the strange “new” bookshelf. She showed them the scuff marks on the floor, and suggested there might be a secret passageway on the other side. Norwood was nowhere to be seen, but Kitten decided to keep watch as the others moved the bookshelf.

After lots of pain, sweat, and tears, Bakerloo, Quill, Neverseen, and Kei managed to move the bookshelf. Behind it was a door.

“I’d bet money there’s something hidden in there,” Quill said.

“You’re probably right. I’ll go in first!” Neverseen said. She opened up the door, and stepped inside. The room was completely dark, but she could hear a loud buzzing noise. Curious, Neverseen stepped further in. She felt something--no, many somethings--land on her skin. Panicked, she shook her arms and tried to shake them off, but they wouldn’t go away. Neverseen ran her hand along the wall, desperately searching for a lightswitch. She finally found one, and screamed when she saw what was all over her.

She was covered head to toe in wasps and hornets. She cried out in alarm and ran out of the room, trying to brush them off of her as she did. Neverseen made it out and collapsed on the library floor, still scraping at her sleeves. But thankfully, they were all gone.

“What’s wrong?” Bakerloo asked. “What’s in there? We heard you scream!”

“It’s filled with wasps!” Neverseen yelled. “Didn’t you see them?”

Kei pointed at the open door. “How? Everything on the other side of that door is covered in darkness. We can’t see a thing.”

“Here, I’ll go in next,” Bakerloo offered. He stepped inside the room, just as Neverseen had. The room was totally dark--Bakerloo waved his arms around, looking for a light source. He felt something slide over his foot and jumped.

“It was probably nothing,” Bakerloo whispered to himself. He wished the others could see into the strange room, so they could also reassure him.

He reached the other wall, and felt another door. He was reaching for the doorknob when another thing slid over his foot. He jumped backwards, crying out in shock. He nearly fell over, and as he was regaining his balance, his hand hit something.

The lights suddenly turned on, and Bakerloo looked around, in horror, to see that the room was completely filled with snakes. “I thought you said there were wasps! Not snakes!”

Bakerloo was terrified, but he knew he had to get through the door. He tried to reach for the doorknob again, when one of the snakes hissed at him. It opened its jaws and Bakerloo moved his ankle just in time for the snake to bite the air instead. Bakerloo decided to give up, and he ran out of the room, snakes chasing after him.

“So snakes, huh?” Kei asked. “How could the room have wasps one moment, then snakes the next?”

“I don’t know, but I’m terrified of snakes, so I’m not going back in there,” Bakerloo said. “There was another door on the other side of the room, though.”

“Maybe the snakes and the wasps are guarding that door,” Quill suggested. “There’s gotta be something important in there.”

“We’d better move the bookshelf back,” Kitten interrupted. “I really want to know what’s in there, but our hour of free time is almost over, and Norwood can’t know we found this.”

“Fair enough,” Kei said. “We’ll have to come back down here the next chance we get.”

Aha! I knew it! Hi Sybill :)

Norwood seems very sketchy, but I feel like that's probably a red herring. Or reverse psychology to make us think he's a red herring because he's too suspicious but he's actually up to something? I doubt it, but it's something to consider. Also, a being covered in wasps and hornets sounds absolutely horrifying, that gave me chills.

I'm terribly sorry that I haven't been commenting more, but I would just like to say that this is simply wonderful and I adore every new part of it :) Aspen dying was a shock, and I'm pretty sure that I'm a little suspicious. DAY THREE, Part Two

“All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.” -- Edgar Allan Poe
~~~
The remaining residents had gathered back in the lounge. Fauna nervously checked to make sure they were all there--thankfully, nobody had gone missing. Norwood seemed excited, and kept pacing as the guests filed into the room. Skip wondered what could have possibly gotten him in such a good mood--last night had been peaceful and fun, but they still hadn't been truly happy since the first death.
Norwood impatiently waited for everyone to fall silent, then he began to speak. "I have an absolutely wonderful surprise planned for y'all! Please, just follow me outside!"
The guests shared confused glances with each other, but followed Norwood anyways. Even Fauna and Orion seemed perplexed. For some of the guests, that confusion began to turn to fear. If even the other staff members didn't know what was going on, there was a good chance it was going to be awful.
Norwood took the residents into the gardens. A small canopy had been set up, and there was a coffin sitting upon a table. The guests' concern grew. Was this a funeral? But, why would Norwood be so happy about a funeral?
"Please, everyone, have a seat. Don't worry, the stone path was cleaned just last night, you won't get any dirt on you," Norwood instructed. Everyone obeyed, even Orion and Fauna.
"What are you going to do?" Glimmer asked. "I hope you're not going to try to pretend nothing bad happened, like you did earlier."
"Oh, you'll see. And you'll see why nothing bad happened!" Norwood exclaimed. "Because I can fix everything!"
Never had someone saying they could fix something been more terrifying.
"Norwood, I think you're going crazy…" Orion commented. The guests couldn't help but share his sentiment.
Norwood slipped on a pair of white gloves. "Oh, I'm not crazy at all, dear Orion!"
"Uh, I'm not so sure about that…" Onyx muttered, faer face showing hints of terror.
Norwood ignored faer and slowly opened the coffin. Inside was nothing other than Aspen, whose neck was still covered in bruises. Laying on top of them was a doll version of Aspen. Kitten could swear she heard whispering coming from the doll. Onyx, Ace, and Kei all did their best to not look shocked--it was the same doll they'd found in the attic.
Orson was starting to think this could make an interesting start to a new film.
The guests fell silent with worry as Norwood propped up the body. He sat the doll upright in Aspen's lap. The whispering noise grew louder, though it was still unintelligible. Norwood didn't even glance at the guests as he continued to work. Bakerloo was starting to consider running away.
Norwood adjusted one of Aspen's limp hands and Luna saw that red strings in Aspen's fingertips connected them to the doll. They narrowed their eyes, wondering what Norwood could be up to. Silver Crystal wondered what would happen if someone were to cut the strings, but she didn't try anything. There was an uncomfortable pause as Norwood began to tear the doll up. Bakerloo was seriously considering running away now.
"Look! I'm fixing everything!" Norwood stepped away from the doll and the coffin, cotton stuffing spilling onto the ground. The strings began to glow, as did the doll's button eyes. The whispering became muffled screaming.
Luna noticed something poking out from the doll's remaining stuffing. Xe leaned closer, observing the small, greyish object. They noticed that it seemed to be beating--with a knot in their stomach, ae realized it was a heart. The heart begin to beat quicker and harder, and some of the other guests began to notice it as well.
Onyx thought fae were going to vomit.
And then, suddenly, the heart quit beating. There was another long pause, Norwood looking like a rabid dog as he paced nervously. Then, there was something. A tiny something, but it was something.
Aspen's hand twitched.
DAY THREE, Part Three
"Have you ever died in a nightmare?" -- Will Wood
~~
The twitch was all it took--glee lit up Norwood's face and every single one of the guests held in their breath, waiting so, so, tensely. The murderer however, waited even more tensely, barely restraining their rage. Had Norwood really done it? Had he… saved everyone?
Aspen's eyes opened--painfully slowly, one at a time. They twitched suddenly, their head tilting to the side. A strange black liquid was pouring from their lips.
"Oh, Norwood," they said, their voice slurred by the liquid pooling in their mouth. "You've done it, haven't you?"
And then, suddenly, they collapsed, landing face-first on the pavement.
There was a very uncomfortable moment of silence. Suddenly, Luna swore very loudly.
"...We should take them to the infirmary," Fauna said, now that the quiet had been broken. The guests blinked at her.
"Uh… Kei, and Luna. You two handled the corpses… mind giving me a hand?" Fauna asked. Both reluctantly agreed.
It was decided that the rest of the guests could have free time. Kei and Luna joined the others after they finished helping Fauna. Nobody really did much of anything--everyone was still too stunned by Norwood's experiment. Neverseen even forgot to write down where everyone was going.
The killer realized this was a perfect opportunity.
Neverseen, Glimmer, and Skip had gone down to the library. Skip was letting Neverseen stand on their shoulders so she could reach a book on the top shelf. Glimmer was getting bored and decided to wander away.
Neverseen finally grabbed the book she'd wanted so desperately. "Got it!"
Skip let her down. "We should start to head back. The hour's almost over."
"I hope we're allowed to take books out of the library. I mean, we should be, right?" Neverseen glanced around. "Glimmer! Where'd you go?"
There was no response. Neverseen grew worried--usually her spunky AE would have instantly snapped back with at least something.
"Maybe Glimmer already left? She looked pretty bored…" Skip suggested.
"Maybe," Neverseen said, but she sounded unsure. "I hope all that stuff earlier didn't bother her too much--do you think she's in the attic?"
"We should look for her," Skip said. "I'll ask if anyone's seen her."
As it turned out, the last time Glimmer had been seen was walking into the library with Skip and Neverseen. Soon, everyone began to look for her.
It was Luna who found her. "She's in the pool! I think she's… asleep?"
Everyone rushed down to the pool. Already suspicious, Luna decided to go to the infirmary and get Fauna.
Neverseen burst through the pool doors, looking around desperately. "Glimmer!!"
She spotted her AE a moment later. Glimmer was floating on the water, face down. She wasn't responding--Neverseen, already panicked, jumped into the water and swam out to her AE.
Neverseen didn't bother checking for a pulse. She pushed Glimmer back to the edge of the pool. Kitten helped her lift Glimmer onto the tiled floor.
Fauna arrived a moment later, running towards Glimmer. There was a tense pause, Neverseen's eyes beginning to water, as they waited for Fauna to give her verdict.
Fauna swallowed nervously. It was just as she'd feared--Glimmer was dead.
Luna arrived several minutes later. Quill and Bakerloo told her what had happened. Luna's face turned grim, but they said nothing. Silver Crystal and Skip did their best to comfort a distraught Neverseen.
Nobody felt like eating dinner that night.
I finally caught up with this! Sorry for not posting for so long.
I love everything that's going on here- how unhinged Norwood is, the allusions to the Mystery, the several mysterious things going on. The room behind the booksehlf definitely seems to be full of whatever the person who enters it is afraid of- so I wonder what could be in the room beyond...?
This is awesome, I'm having a lot of fun reading it!
I have been active for far to long now, so I missed this until now and-
NOOOOOOOOOOO! I NEVER THOUGHT DEATH WOULD FEEL LIKE THIS! I DIDN'T WANT TO DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glimmer, its just a ski lodge, calm down. And secondly, its a ski lodge. What did you expect? It wasn't very likely you would be the murderer, so you would probably just end up dead anyway.
So sympathetic Neverseen...
Oh Glimmer!
Anyhow, I've got something to add to my sus(picious) notes:
I was getting a book with Skip, so how could I have murdered Glimmer (unless she was poisoned, but the fact that she drowned and the fact that I don't think Glimmer would have just gone out to float in a lake to let the effects of poison slowly kill her kind of eliminates that)? I have a reasonable aliby now, and Skip does as well. I believe this means that me and Skip should at least temporarily be deemed safe and that I should be removed from the suspect list.
You know you put yourself on that list in the first place...
Yes, yes, Glimmer, I know...
But anyway, this is just getting better and better! AMAZING writing! Thank you so much for keeping this up!
DAY FOUR, Part One
Sometimes, I wonder if the 'self' is false, and if maybe we are not even real at all.
~~
It seemed to Kitten that the morning simply wouldn't come. Night was dragging on--it was as if time itself had been stretched out like a rubber band. Kitten didn't know if she'd been awake for minutes, or hours.
There wasn't much for her to do in their little room, but she didn't want to get up either. It was still dark out and they didn't want to interrupt everyone else's sleep. Maybe they should have gotten some books from the library…
A knock at the door interrupted. Kitten's thoughts. "Hello?" she said, approaching the door. She opened it, about to greet the person on the other side--when suddenly Kitten screamed, and, just as quickly, was silent.
--
Orson had been up all night working on a new script. Bakerloo had warned him not to, but what was he to do when the claws of inspiration gripped him? He was a filmmaker, after all, and he couldn't bear to ignore his calling. And, Orson knew it had been the right decision, because he'd gotten more done tonight than he had all week!
A scream interrupted him. Orson sighed loudly.
"Mind toning it down? I've got work to do!"
There was no response. He sighed again and continued working.
A moment later, a cluster of guests burst into his room. Orson was about to lecture them on the importance of leaving a writing person alone, but the leader of the group, Nerd, was already talking.
"Orson! Come help us! Kitten's gone missing and there's blood in front of her door!" Nerd didn't wait for a response. She turned away, leaving the door wide open. There was another scream--unmistakably Kitten. They were yelling… help?
Nerd ran towards the source of the scream, Bakerloo right behind her. They hadn't had enough time to wake up very many people, and so it was up to Bakerloo, Nerd, Orson, Ace and Quill to save Kitten.
"Nerd, wait! Don't try to go after them on your own!" Quill yelled. But Nerd wasn't listening. She didn't care if she was alone, she was going to save Kitten.
Nerd ran down the stairs--nearly falling in the process-- and spotted Kitten, who was being dragged by someone in a cloak that covered their face. The cloaked figure looked up to see Nerd--most of their face was covered by a mask, but she could see their eyes. It was too dark to make out the exact color. However, she did notice that they seemed to be on the taller side--not super tall, but certainly not short.
"Let go of my friend!" Nerd yelled. The figure lifted Kitten over their shoulder and began to run. Kitten seemed to be unconscious--Nerd hoped that she would be able to live long enough for Nerd to be able to save her.
Nerd could hear Quill and Bakerloo calling for her, but she ignored them and continued to chase after the kidnapper. She sprinted through the lounge, and outdoors, bursting through the doors. The cloaked figure was just in front of her--she reached for their hood, trying to reveal who they were.
And then her foot hit a stone and she fell down, cursing. The cloaked figure ran, Kitten still over their shoulder. Nerd stood back on her feet to see they were totally gone. She did her best to blink back tears--Kitten had been stolen.
"Nerd!" Quill found her first, Bakerloo, Orson, and Ace just a step behind. "Are you alright?"
Nerd was speechless and stunned. Quill gave Bakerloo a look of concern. "Maybe we should get Fau--"
"No," Nerd interrupted. "I'm… I'll be okay. We have to--get the others. We have to find Kitten."
"Nerd…" Bakerloo trailed off when he saw Nerd's expression. "Okay, but first, we need to get help."
