Digital Art

I'm going to go on a quick road trip pretty soon and I'm bringing my IPad along, so I decided I will start digital art! What are some recommendations for best digital art apps? Thanks!

I strongly recommend Procreate. I usually use Photoshop bc my mom has it on her computer, but when I’m on the go Procreate is my fave. I haven’t played with all the settings yet, but I do know that it has a great selection of brushes and it’s not too hard to use. Plus, it has the advantage of not having a layer limit like some other apps (actually that technically depends on your canvas size but...) which is great because layers are pretty much essential to digital art. If I were you, I’d check out other options as well, but you should definitely consider Procreate.

I agree with Agent Winter, Procreate is the best. I have an Apple Pencil, which makes drawing easier, but it's really not necessary, you can make great art without it. And procreate is really versatile, they have, like, every type of brush imaginable (the Textures and Elements tab can be useful). It's also free, which is a plus :)

And as I might add, you can make animations on Procreate, which I've been doing more of of recently. It's very fun.

I think if you're on an Ipad, Procreate is the best option (never used it but I've heard about it from literally everyone), but it's $9.99, so if you want a free option I suggest IbisPaintX or Medibang Paint - they're both great options. Medibang has a better feature for sharing art online (in my opinion), but IbisPaintX has a replay function, so you can see your drawing process. If you want to animate, I think Flipaclip is pretty good, but the resolution is really bad if you're not paying, and I also use Alight Motion - A lot of the options, like keyframe animation are only available if you pay for it, but you can make some frame-by-frame animations, and even if it takes more effort than Flipaclip, it's more versatile and it has better resolution.

oh that's funny. When I got Procreate it was free from the Apple app store. I googled it and some sources say free and others say it's not, so idk

I'd definitely second what everyone has been saying about Procreate! It's definitely a very professional app. The only issue is that it updates frequently, so unless your iPad is pretty new, it won't work for very long. I've used Procreate for years with no big deal, but around December it started being kind of laggy, and then about a month ago it completely quit. So just be wary of that. Like everyone else has said, it does cost money-- they've actually raised the price since I bought it, which is funny to me, but it costs around 7 or 10 dollars now. If you're serious about getting into digital art, it's a good investment, though. With that being said, it is one of the most complicated programs out there. If you're just getting started, maybe it isn't the best place to start? The app I've been using since Procreate quit on me is called Brushes Redux. I guess it's alright-- it has all the standard features. It's really not my favorite, but it is supported for an iPad and if you're just starting out it's alright.

If you're a beginner, I would consider Sketches Pro. But, you gotta buy it so...maybe it isn't the best. Also, Procreate is really good and Bamboo Paper. I have loads of apps, and these are the ones I use:

Procreate: 10/10

Sketches Pro: 9/10

Bamboo Paper: 7/10

Zen Brush: 5/10

Art Rage: 10/10
