Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Theatre, auditions, etc!

Theatre, auditions, etc!

Sorry, it's been a while since I've been on here, but I wanted to do just an unabridged (and unedited, so beware) rant about my new acting class!

So I joined a homeschool co-op, mostly just because some friends of mine were there and it wasn't too far away, for art and theatre. Art is really fun, but the acting class seems like it's directed at a younger level a lot of the time, particularly for the warmups. I know that warming up your body, voice, and ability to communicate with other people is an important thing for an actor of any level, but these particular warmups aren't as effective as ones I've done in other classes I feel like.

Well anyway, we're doing an abridged version of the Tempest. It has a tiny cast, and our acting group is huge!

Now, if you know the story of the Tempest, you know that the only main female character is Miranda, though we're basically counting Ariel as female in our production. Well, there are eight or so of us girls in eighth or ninth grade, and most of us are pretty good at acting. There are lots of secondary male parts for the noblemen etc that will probably be played by girls, but almost none of us would like to play a guy. I would rather not, but it would be better than not having lines at all.

And then, Prospero talks about three times as much as Miranda... and honestly, all the boys I saw didn't seem to have much acting experience...

Altogether it doesn't seem like the best choice of a play to me.

We did auditions on Monday, and I guess they went pretty well, the teacher just had us read through a few scenes. I did pronounce "Sycorax" as "Seeracorks"! But I stayed in character and ignored it.

Since a lot of people were absent, we'll probably do more auditions next week (the co-op meets once a week), and finally get to see the cast list the week after that! So, how am I going to survive the wait? Do you have any acting/audition stories to tell?

Hi Stella!

Lets see, how to pass by that agony...I would try thinking about it as little as possible. If you can’t, then I would read up more on Miranda’s lines, so if you do get that role you have a head start.

Right now, my high school drama club (I’m a freshman) is prepping for our play, Steel Magnolias. I’m stage manager and have after school practice four times a week. I need to get to know the script to give cues, and do other stuff with the rest of the crew. I also read for absent actresses, but I’ll probably be doing more soon. I need to get the lists of materials and people ready.

I hope you have tons of fun!! ^^

Thank you! Haha, I have trouble thinking about what not to think about! What is Steel Magnolias about? I haven't heard of it before.

Let’s see...

Well, it’s set in the 80s, and it’s a bit complicated but it’s basically about a group of women that go through many things together. There is only one set which is a beauty parlour owned by one of the characters, were the women gossip and talk about what’s going on. But it’s way better than I’m making it to sound like...XD. It’s hilarious, tear jerking, and relatable all at the same time.

They made a movie about it with Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton.

Instead of purposely not thinking about it, try thinking about something else, like pink elephants.

Awesome! The Tempest is a great play. Last year our school did Macbeth and I got to be Lady Macbeth which was AWESOME! I hope you get a great part!

My school is doing the Tempest too! But we are doing two plays, so I am the sheriff's wife in Robin Hood! What role did you get?

Oh, good luck finding out your part Stella! My school is doing Les Mis for the musical, which I’m really really excited about, but our auditions aren’t until late October. On Saturday I’m going to see it (with the traveling Broadway cast!) for like $25 with my school!

I did a theatre camp over the summer that was really cool. We did a play called Godspell (Which is amazing btw) and I made a lot of great friends. During one of the preformances, I said one of my lines too early, so one guy was still talking. Talk about awkward! But, I pulled through and had a great time. Cool

Oh, we're doing Into the Woods as my school play and I get to play the Baker's Wife (the main female role), so yay!
