Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Poetry Contest

Poetry Contest

Well, we haven't had one of these in a while, have we? Time for a new one, I say! Welcome, resident poets!

The rules are pretty simple. I am the first judge. I will give you a theme, and you must write a poem relating to the theme. Be creative with your interpretations! I will then judge the entries by a set date, and the winner will then be the next judge, and set the next theme. And so on, and so forth.

The first theme will be... *dramatic drumroll*

Stars! Whether you chose to write about the kind of stars you wish on, or the kind that take the stage, I will be eagerly awaiting your sparkly, shiny, beautiful poems. Have them in by... Saturday, March 18. Two weeks. Sound fair?

I hope to see your poems soon!

The Start

How many times do we have to this?

How many lives will we have to save?

How many choices will we do together?

How will you teach me to be brave?

I never thought,

That we would be here.

But our paths have crossed.

Is this the star of a new hero?

Or the end to the throne of evil?

All is well,

As long as we start now.

When a rain drop soaring down from a cloud

Reaches the earth

That life is ending

But when it falls into a roaring river

That leads to the sea

That life is just beginning

When the nest is too full

And it's time to stretch your wings

Life at home with family is done

But life filled with soaring and sky

That is just starting

One of many on the face

Of a flower of sun

Falling away from my old life

And sprouting one new

Life without him is ending

It is hard, but necessary

Because now

Life with just ME is finally beginning

I've judged a couple times before, but I think this was my favorite time. I had so much fun reading all your poems and then writing about them. Congratulations to all of you, honestly, all of your poems were incredible.

Honorable Mentions (as always, in no particular order)

CelineBurning Bright!
Your poem makes me so happy because it manages to distill the essence of why I chose the prompt. There's that feeling of renewal, of the end of a stagnant time, of rebirth. I love how it ends slightly hopeful, even though the rest of the poem is the opposite. Overall, great job.
Ayles C.!
You managed to capture the uncertainty of a beginning, combined with hope for a new day. Your poem highlights the contrast between one certain beginning and many possible endings. It's the many stories that haven't been told and the nervousness of beginning something, all in one poem. You've done wonderful.
third place . . .
Hawkstar!
I adore all the imagery in the first few stanzas. (My personal favorite is "When a rain drop soaring down from a cloud / Reaches the earth / That life is ending / But when it falls into a roaring river / That leads to the sea/ That life is just beginning", but then, I'm always partial to rain imagery.) I love how you tell different stories but connect them together with one theme, and I love how you resolve it at the end. It gives me the feeling I get after a rainstorm and during the spring, which is one of my favorite feelings ever.
second place . . .
Ultimatum!
Wow. Seriously. The storytelling is incredible. I love the repeating line "struck with amnesia" and I love the intertwining storylines. I think my favorite part might be "Our lives are all circles / We all meet in the end". It's so satisfying to read. It reminds me slightly of a winding path, contemplative and pretty wandering. But it also feels like flashes and recollections all turning around in my mind. Just stunning.
first place . . .
Moon Wolf!
This poem is seriously so good. The imagery? The rhymes? "The cracked cobblestone street / The smudged glass of the store / The rust of the lampstand / None knowing what they were for" You establish a really vivid setting of a dying town, and elicit the intended emotion from us (loss, despair, hopelessness) and then, at the end, introduce something new. A small green sprout. I'm obsessed with the last stanza, too. "And through all the turmoil / And through all the pain / From the sky comes / A single drop of rain" There's something perfectly hopeful in it, I slightly want to get it tattooed on me. Well done.

Thank you Wordsong and yess I agree with everything!! Moon Wolf, your poem was splendidly spectacular, congrats!! Life...

The cool air brushing my cheek, drying my tears, tousling my hair

Whipping to and fro in a way that's both wild and gentle

And full of

Life, filling me with life, energy

Crackling, leaping, jolting

Me, this world is

Mine,

All mine

To explore, to laugh,

To shout and dance and sing in the rain,

To do whatever I want, to be whoever I want

To be,

My world

To live in,

My life

To live for,

My purpose

To live to,

And I'm going to live,

And I'm going to live

And I'm living.

I'm living.

Omygoshsecondplace! Thanks so much, Wordsong!!!!!! Everyone did such a good job with their poems!

Right, next theme, here I go.

/////

The ferryman's apprentice

Can you make out

the lantern bobbing in the night

Can you laugh at me

wave goodbye to those still standing in the light

I stride away by the side of the Styx

sorrows and joys in my mind unfixed

Tonight the ferryman is in high demand.

the people are hurried, their souls unrested;

they want to move faster.

Their uncertain steps grow decidedly firmer.

We are all transients at the end of the day

so why make the decision, why cast life away?

But then again, I cannot say.

So I sit on the bank and lament to her-

she throws up a wispy breeze

she hushes the blazing thunder

she can bring the firmest to their knees

she can melt away every blunder

Sunset paints the sky

the day is coming to a close

might another few hours well spent

make a difference? I suppose.

So come sit on the bank, pose your questions to the moon-

You'll find that its light follows you, even through the gloom.

We are all passer-bys at the end of the day

so do postpone that decision, why cast life away?

Then again, I cannot say.

Please, sit on the bank and lament to her-

she weaves the misty rains

she parts the gushing rivers

she casts away all pains

she comforts every shiver.

Once you're done, tell me-

Can you make out

the lantern fading into the night

Can you laugh at me

wave goodbye to the person not standing in the light

I stride away by the side of the Styx

with sorrows and joys in my mind unfixed

Tonight the Styx is silent and unbound

a small corner of darkness, in the light that surrounds.

Life

What is life to you?

Is it the way you turn the page of a book and take it all in?

Is it when you kick the soccer ball and score a goal during a game?

Or is it the way your friends make you laugh and smile?

Or is all of these things that make life for you?

Or is life something completely different to you?

Is it some other sport, or a hobbie, or even a person?

What is life to you?

What does it mean to you?

As a child

I felt wild

free, had fun

got tanned in the sun

disobayed and played

pretend and reality

was a finality

As a teen

all the time I was seen

out with friends

no longer played pretend

music was on

from dusk to dawn

and quiet corners with books

to take many looks

into other worlds

As an adult

I found love

feelings of romance was high

started a family of my

own, children that were both wild

and mild

As an old one

I dreamed of my days in the sun

thinking my life through

and of any dreams to come true

for you

Hello! I'm Sylvazia. I'm kind of new to CBing, but here is my poem.

Rain

Rain is life

Water seeps into our roots

and makes us grow

Though some call it sad,

and depressing,

 life can be too!

Rain seeps into our roots,

making us grow

Though some hope for warm days

Sunny, and hot days

What gives us life is the water,

those hard days where the sky is gray.

Water makes the flowers bloom

Makes the grass green

Water fills the ocean

Where the tides swirl, by the moon’s command

Water is the rain that makes the rainbow

Water is the river that cools your toes

Water is the lake that glows green in the sunlight

Rain is water

And water is life
