Musical Theater and

Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Musical Theater and

Musical Theater and Broadway Club

Theater kids of the world UNITE!

So I am a BIG musical theater fan. I go to a musical theater academy in addition to regular school. I take vocal and acting.

I love musicals. I listen to soundtracks, and I have five vocal books with songs I sing. At the Academy, I've done big song numbers with my friends...I just love musical theater.

Since I was little, my parents would put on old musicals, especially On the Town and Singing in the Rain, which is one of my FAVORITE movies ever. I've watched it more times than I can count.

When I first started taking vocal lessons, it wasn't at the Academy. I took private lessons, and the book I used had a lot of songs from more classic Broadway musicals like Annie, Oliver, Annie Get Your Gun, and even Disney movies. I also did a few summer camps.

When I started going to the academy, a lot of the kids there were pretty into 21st century musicals, so I started getting into that too.

Thanks to all this history, I have a pretty diverse love of Broadway musicals...modern, hip-hop, classic, motown, tapping, revivals, early 1900s, and so much more.

I haven't seen a lot of live musicals, so my love of it comes from two things: listening to soundtracks (That's how I fell in love with soundtracks) and singing stuff from musicals.

The musical I am obsessed with at the moment, and I shall forever be obsesed with is Hamilton. I'm probably going to make a separate thread for it. I've listened to all 46 songs, pretty much memorized them, I browse fanart, I check Lin's Twitter (even though I don't even HAVE a Twitter), I followup on the news.

So! Enough about me.

What about you guys? If you are into Broadway musicals or starting to be, then this thread is for you!

In that case, you're free to talk about it on this thread. Also, could you please answer the following questions:

Musical Theater Survey

1. Did you watch the Tonys?

2. List your favorite musicals, even if you have trouble thinking of everything. Just say what you can.

3. Legit musicals you've seen ('legit' does not count school plays, although those can be really cool. But I'm talking about at theaters.)

4. Would you say your love comes from A) watching live musicals B) being in musicals/school plays/jr musicals C) listening to soundtracks D) singing songs

5. Musical(s) you would like to explore, or listen to the soundtrack

6. Do you do singing, acting, or dancing?

7. Musicals you'll be seeing soon

I'll submit my answers later.

Look up Kurt Browing Singin' in the Rain. He duplicated on ice Gene Kelley's famous dance scene. Watch Gene, then watch Kurt. I love those old dance scenes.

I love pretty much all musicals (except High School Musical, yuck) but I cannot act because I have stage fright. I sing... terribly. So, I can't actually be a part of the theater, but I like it anyway.

1. Did you watch the Tonys?

Like, three minutes of it.

2. List your favorite musicals, even if you have trouble thinking of everything. Just say what you can.

Oh gosh. Too many.

The Sound of Music

Annie

Newsies (I finally saw it, Brooklyn! Eeeee!)

Fiddler on the Roof

Oliver!

Do Disney princess movies count? (Haha no)

The Wizard of Oz

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Jesus Christ Superstar (Don't know if this counts, but)

Grease

Mary Poppins

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

and a lot more that I've probably missed.

3. Legit musicals you've seen ('legit' does not count school plays, although those can be really cool. But I'm talking about at theaters.)

I've only seen a few in real life. And not on broadway or anything, just at the college that's by us. Does that count?

Fiddler on the Roof

Annie

Oliver!

Jesus Christ Superstar

4. Would you say your love comes from A) watching live musicals B) being in musicals/school plays/jr musicals C) listening to soundtracks D) singing songs

A) Watching live musicals, and, um, watching the movie versions because I live in the middle of nowhere. And C), because songs from musicals are always the best.

Our school did a version of Grease one time and I almost died, so definitely not B.

5. Musical(s) you would like to explore, or listen to the soundtrack

Hamilton. Because everyone says it's super good and it doesn't have a movie *sad*

6. Do you do singing, acting, or dancing?

Heck no. Well, I like to sing, but I sound like a dying walrus. And I dance like one too.

7. Musicals you'll be seeing soon

Oklahoma!

That's probably the only one. The other musicals/plays that the local college is putting on this year aren't really appropriate.

1. Um...no... Oops!

2. Annie, Phantom of the Opera, Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, (I dunno if this counts) Bedposts and Broomsticks

3. Annie and The Phantom of the Opera

4. C) and D). After I saw the Phantom, I bought the soundtrack and listened to it every day and I started singing the songs too.

5. The Phantom of the Opera! I'm sorry, but I am so in love with it!!!!

6. All 3.

7. Well, I really want to see Hamilton...

1. Did you watch the Tonys?

No. :-( But I know that James Corden hosted them, and I am a big fan of him! Has anyone seen his Carpool Karaoke with Lin-Manuel Miranda?

2. List your favorite musicals, even if you have trouble thinking of everything. Just say what you can.

Some of these aren't my absolute favorites, but I like all of these:

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella

The Lion King

Finding Neverland

Wicked

Newsies

The Sound of Music

Mary Poppins

Aladdin (I love the Broadway version so much. All the songs they added are amazing, and the new arrangements of the old songs are awesome!)

Does The Nightmare Before Christmas count? I love the music from it.

3. Legit musicals you've seen ('legit' does not count school plays, although those can be really cool. But I'm talking about at theaters.)

I've actually kind of seen a lot...

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella

The Lion King

Wicked

The Sound of Music

Mary Poppins (I don't remember much of it, though)

Annie

Aladdin

Beauty and the Beast (Again, I don't remember much of it)

Matilda

Oh, and Phantom of the Opera, with my mom and grandmothers, because my dad couldn't go. It was kind of disturbing, but good.

4. Would you say your love comes from A) watching live musicals B) being in musicals/school plays/jr musicals C) listening to soundtracks D) singing songs

Mainly B and C, but B and C cause me to want to do A and D. I'm making this way too complicated.

5. Musical(s) you would like to explore, or listen to the soundtrack

I'd like to listen to more Hamilton. I've listened to some (enough to know how to sing "Alexander Hamilton, my name is Alexander Hamilton" in the right tune), but not much. There's just a lot of explicitness and language...And I really want to see Finding Neverland. I've listened to a lot of the songs and I LOVE them. Also Aida and Little Shop of Horrors.

6. Do you do singing, acting, or dancing?

I do school theatre and not-very-strict theatre summer camp. I don't sing on its own, but I like to sing in the musicals. I dance in the musicals but not nearly as much as I sing. I can't really dance.

7. Musicals you'll be seeing soon

I'm hoping I'll see Finding Neverland because it's coming to where I live soon but I'm not sure.

Fflewddur says hkzm. Do you mean Kassim?  I am listening to "High Adventure."

I will fill it out now...

1. Yes, all of it! It was really awesome!

2. Oh gosh, this is hard. *mentally scolds* Owlgirl, you are tricky. Let's see...

Hamilton, Singin In the Rain, Wicked, Annie, Sound of Music

3. Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" at the Richard Rodgers Theater, on Broadway, in New York City! And The Lion King, in London.

4. C, D, and E...sorry, should've added it...watching movie versions

5. Les Miserables, more of Phantom of the Opera (I've only heard three or four songs), RENT, Legally Blonde, Oliver

6. Singing and acting. This summer, I'm starting beginner Ballet, Jazz, and Tap, because dancing is NOT my strong suit but I will soon start needing it at the Academy.

7. WICKED!!!!!!!! I am seeing it in a few days, and I am SO EXCITEEEEEED!

1. Did you watch the Tonys?

2. List your favorite musicals, even if you have trouble thinking of everything. Just say what you can.

Hmm...

Hamilton

Wicked

Into the Woods

Little Women (Some of it. Some of the songs I do find boring)

This probably doesn't count, but...Muppets Most Wanted

I like a lot of musicals, but these are the ones that come to mind when you say favorite.

3. Legit musicals you've seen ('legit' does not count school plays, although those can be really cool. But I'm talking about at theaters.)

Honk

The Phantom Tollbooth (Both of those when I was very little)

Wicked (On Broadway!)

Matilda

And  more, but I can't remember them right now.

4. Would you say your love comes from A) watching live musicals B) being in musicals/school plays/jr musicals C) listening to soundtracks D) singing songs

None of those in particular. I just really love it!

5. Musical(s) you would like to explore, or listen to the soundtrack

Les Miserables. I am ashamed to say that I haven't yet listened to much of it.

Also, I'd like to listen to more musicals in general!

6. Do you do singing, acting, or dancing?

All three! I'm a triple threat!

7. Musicals you'll be seeing soon

Something Rotten is coming to my town, along with a lot of other musicals. I'm definetely going to see Something Rotten, and possibly Finding Neverland.

I SAW WICKED YESTERDAY!!!!!

OHMYGOSH THAT WAS THR BEST MUSICAL I HAVE EVER SEEN!!

I am not exaggerating, my jaw was open during Defying Gravity.  The girl playing Ephaba? She SLAYED THAT SONG. SLAYED IT. And even though I never actually saw the show with Idina Menzel, I went to her concert, and she sang Defying Gravity....I didn't think I would ever say this but OHMYGOSH THIS ELPHABA HAD A VOICE THAT DEFIED MY EXPECTATIONS AND DEFIED GRAVITY AND WAS JUST AS GOOD AS IDINA, IF NOT BETTER THAN IT WAS IN THE CONCERT.

That musical was amazing! It's remarkable to see it live, and not just listen to try soundtrack.

And the special effects and lighting and smoke was so elaborate!
