Here's chapter 4! And Katy, I think you'll enjoy this.

Chapter 4

Ruineth screamed, clutching her ears. The woman stared at her. “What's the matter elf?” The woman asked curiously. “I have pointed ears.” Ruineth gasped.

“Of course you do.” The woman said, obviously disgusted. “I never had them before!” Ruineth said, starting to hyperventilate. The woman stared at her. “Stop fooling with me Dædhel.” The woman said, grabbing her mirror back from Ruineth.

Ruineth stood there, gaping at the woman. “But I'm …not …” Ruineth trailed off. The woman started packing up her most valuable wares into a bag. “Stop trying to curse my pottery filth!” The woman spat, attempting to hide the bag from Ruineth.

“But, I-I'm not an elf … I'm a human …I think-but I didn't have pointed ears before today …” Ruineth said. The woman blinked at her. “Huh. I thought so.” She said sarcastically to Ruineth.

“Now get out of here, before I call the Keepers out on you.” The woman hissed fiercely. Ruineth nodded, stumbling away in shock.  But I'm not an elf …I don't think. Ruineth thought, confused.

A girl leaned out from a nearby alley. “Psst!” The girl hissed. Ruineth blinked. “What?” Ruineth asked. The girl rolled her eyes. She waved her hand.

Ruineth ran into the alley. “What?” She asked again. “First, take down your hair,” The girl said shaking her head with disdain.

“Okay.” Ruineth said, shrugging her shoulders before taking it down.  Long, wavy black hair, flawless face, silver eyes, long green dress. Huh. And she's warning me about my safety. Or something. Spoiled royalty. Ruineth thought with bitter disgust. The girl blinked at her.

“Why weren't you using the Silin spell?” The girl demanded. Ruineth opened her mouth to speak, but the girl cut her off.

“No, I can sense that the Silin spell was used on you, but you didn’t perform it yourself. Interesting …” The girl mused to herself. Ruineth raised an eyebrow, not sure what to make of this girl. “I’m Ruineth.” Ruineth said quietly. “Hm? Oh! I’m Evanlyn Tropia. But you can call me Evy. You aren’t paying any attention to keeping yourself alive, are you?”

Ruineth gaped at her. “What do you mean!” She hissed at Evy. Evy frowned. “I don’t need to protect myself.” Ruineth stated, wondering what Evy meant. “You’re an elf! Does this mean anything to you?” Evy asked in wonder. “But I’m not an elf!” Ruineth protested. Evy frowned. “One second.” Evy said.

Evy closed her eyes and murmured something under her breath. She opened her eyes a moment later and stared at Ruineth in shock. “You’re telling the truth.” She gasped in shock. “Of course I am. I have no reason or motive to lie.” Ruineth said.

“Well, I used the Githin spell on you and-” Evy stopped, noticing Ruineth’s blank gaze. “Oh, sorry, the truth spell. And, well, you don’t have a single clue that you’re an elf. Oh, I’d better report this to the council, they won’t like this. But Iori will be fine with this. She enjoys new visitors.”

“Who’s Iori?”

“Oh. Well, she’s Princess Iori. Listen, Ruineth, you’d best come with me. Or-or else you could put our people in danger.”

Chapter 5

Into the woods

Ruineth gaped at Evy. “How could I do that?” Evy shook her head. “No. It's a long story. But I can tell you while we travel into the Daemarth woods.” Ruineth stepped back. “No way! There's, there's stuff in there which could kill us!” Evy shook her head again.

“Yes, there is, but most of the stuff was …made up by the elves. Just to keep more people out. We need to go to Vagilîni.”

“The what?”

“The shining city. The last of the large elven cities. Just come with me Ruineth, I'll explain our history while we walk.”

“I don't know if I am trust you.”

“Nobody ever knows whether or not they can trust someone else. But you have to trust me in this case Ruineth. Please.” Evy begged.

“Fine.”

“Okay, but first I need to perform the Silîn spell on you.”

“Fine.” Ruineth growled.

Evy closed her eyes, murmured a couple of words, and waved her hand around Ruineth's head. Ruineth touched her ears once Evy was done. They felt normal again.

“Okay. Let's go to Vagilîni.” Ruineth commanded. They darted through the crowds to the main gate. “To Daemarth.” Ruineth whispered as they left Goldenwell.

“So, let me start the long story. It all began about a five hundred years ago. The elves were the rulers over all of Nicytha, and highly respected. Their magic helped increase their prestige, and they were-amazing.

But the humans and halflings didn't have much influence, and they started praying to Galthûar,” Ruineth interrupted, “The war god?” Ruineth asked. Evy shivered.

“Yes. They wanted to overpower the elves. And destroy them. They struck an alliance with the dragons, and nearly wiped out the elves in many surprises attacks.

Many halflings were killed too, and they turned on the humans. The humans were merciless. The dragons had only agreed to this alliance, because they had their own devious reasons. My best guess is that they wanted to destroy all of us ‘wyrmlings’ as they call us. That is similar to the name they give their young. Dragonlings.

But I'm getting off track. The elves surrendered and went into hiding for the most part. Now we are termed as ‘sorcerers’ and are scorned. This war had lasted about one hundred years. Three hundred and fifty years later the dragons decided that they were done with all of us ‘wyrmlings’. Luckily, they can't find most of our cities.

But, there is some sort of grudge that they have been holding against us ‘wyrmlings’ that we have all forgotten. But if the humans or dragons found too many of our people, they would attempt to exterminate is again.” Evy said gravely, finishing the story.

“That's interesting. But that's not what I learned in school.” Ruineth said. “That's because the humans lied about what happened. But I've never heard their version of the story.” Evy said.

“Well, they say that the elves turned evil and started abusing their powers. They made an alliance with the halflings and dragons and nearly wiped out all of the elves, but when they were reaching the end of their campaign, the halflings turned on them. They fought back, blow for blow. Then there was peace, with the glorious human rulers. The halflings and dragons were promised to be joint rulers, but they had dishonored their promises. And that's pretty much it.” Ruineth finished.

“Wow. Very different. And yet so similar.”

“Yup. Are we almost there?”

“Not really. But I can get us there faster if you let me cast the Yîfrin spell.”

“You know a lot of magic.”

“Nah. Only the useful stuff.”

“Okay, perform the Yîfrin spell.”

Evanlyn held a hand over Ruineth's head, and her own, muttering to herself for what seemed like an hour. Ruineth blinked, and then found herself standing in front of a huge tree. “It's larger than two full grown dragons standing on top of each other.” Ruineth murmured.

“Yes. Now, come with me to the council.” They walked up the stairs that curved around the huge maple. “What will they do?” Ruineth whispered, suddenly afraid.

“No idea.” Evy said cheerfully, a large smile on her face. Ruineth gawked at her in disbelief. She had never seen Evy smile.

They walked into a large room, full of elves, young and old, rich and poor siting in front of a semicircle table. Evy curtsied neatly as they entered. Ruineth copied her.

“Namasté.” Evy greeted the elves. “Dase veta thir gifæ kanar Evanlyn Tropia?” One elf demanded. “Jö yanø cura haroun?” Another one asked. “Haroun cura Ruineth. M sigî myrê chong ista Goldenwell. M galth myê gifî glarin ferî ciêp myê cura jâ gîla.” Evy explained.

As Evy said this, identical gasps came from many of the council members. “What are you saying!?” Ruineth hissed at Evy. “Ssh. Wait.” One of the men stood up.

“Thurî M dâ rú Storja litriú yi histî ce thirî tarnaka?” He asked. “What are you saying you lunatic?” Evy looked shocked, as Ruineth said this. Evy blushed and said, “Myê gifî glarin gîlan.” The man nodded. “Ah. I see. Escyar M’hu Forwyn.” Ruineth gaped at him.

Then he seemed to realize what he said. “Forgive me, my lady. I seem to have forgotten how to speak the tongues of mortals. May I perform the Storja spell upon you?”

“What does it do?”

“It should tell me about your family, do that we can learn a little more about your past.”

“Well, whether or not I give you permission, you can still do the spell.”

“Actually, no I can't. Elves magic doesn't work that way.”

“So I could deny your request?”

“Yes …”

“Well, that's dumb.”

The elf frowned. “Will you let me?” He asked a little crossly.

“Oh, fine. But you will have to provide transportation for me to the capital, M’raúîni.”

He started looking a little uncomfortable at that. “Well, Thamben, can you explain?”

A man stood up from the middle of the semicircle table. “Yes Pennor, I can, but you must control yourself,” Pennor sat down, obeying Thamben.

“Ruineth, you must stay here. You cannot leave Vagilîni until you have proven that you can keep our secrets.” Ruineth gaped at him in dismay.

“No! You can't do this to me! I won't! I'm supposed to be a knight! Not an elf!” Ruineth burst into tears and ran out the door. She tried to wipe away the tears as she ran, but they kept coming back. She ran up the stairs, never stopping, pushing past people as she ran up.

After what seemed like hours, she reached the top of the tree. Her tears abruptly stopped. The definition of beauty stood in front of her.

A beautiful fountain stood there sweeping and curving, looking almost like the wind, if the wind could be caught, and frozen in time.

Insert image:

Ruineth's breath caught in her throat. It's so beautiful. Who knew such things could be …created. A couple of elves around here her own age were sitting on a nearby bench which was almost as beautiful as the fountain. But not quite. It doesn't have the same elegance.

One of the girls ran towards Ruineth. “I haven't seen you around here. Ever!” She laughed merrily as she said this. “Iori! Get away from that stranger!” One of the other girls shrieked, obviously horrified.

“I'll be fine!” She called back with a giggle. “You're Princess Ioriswen?” Ruineth asked. “The one and the same.” She said with a mock bow. She nearly fell over laughing as she did this. Ruineth heard a couple of the other girls-handmaidens-giggling as Iori was obviously putting on some sort of show to humiliate Ruineth.

Tears started to well up in her eyes again. “I'm done with all these stupid elves!” She shrieked, turning and running down the stairs. Iori and her handmaidens stared at Ruineth ran down the stairs. “Wonder what's up with her.” One of the girls whispered.

Ruineth's face burned with humiliation. She stopped and sat down on a bench. She kept crying, unable to stop. Evy ran right past her, then turned around and sat next to Ruineth. Ruineth turned away, unable to bare the shame. “What's wrong?” Evy asked gently.

“Nothing.” She said bitterly. “There is too something wrong. If it’s becoming a knight, I’m sure I can convince the council. I’m very convincing. You should see me sometime.” As she said this she grinned mischievously.

“I feel like an outsider, when these are own my people!”

“Well, no offense intended whatsoever, but you are an outsider. I don’t mean to hurt your feelings at all, but this is the sad and sorry truth.”

“I know. And I need to face it.”

“Yeah. What did you think of Iori?”

“She’s a giggling nitwit.”

“She’s not that bad. She’s actually pretty cool once you get to know her.”

“Huh. Like I believe that story.”

“It’s true. But we need to get back on topic.”

“I didn’t know there was a topic.”

“Yeah. What’s up with you. What can I do to help?”

“Well, first, why was Iori speaking Nicythian?”

“She’s learning the language.”

“Oh.”

“So do you want to leave?”

“Is anyone going to stop me?”

“Probably not. Almost no one actually takes that law seriously. But then again, everybody knows how to keep their mouth shut.”

“Oh. Thanks for the compliment.”

“No problem! Let’s go.”

“Now?”

“Yup. Iori shouldn’t need me for awhile. But if anyone kills her, they’ll be sorry.”

Oh. Nice to know.”

“I know, right?”

“Sure. Let’s just go before anyone starts caring.”
