Frozen/Brave/Tangled: The

Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Frozen/Brave/Tangled: The

Frozen/Brave/Tangled: The three new thowback Disney films.

Classic Disney to me was always the Princess, fairy-tale movies I grew up loving, and once I sort of grew out of it, I never--seriously--watched anything recent and animated until Brave came out. Then of course Tangled and Frozen came and I became a massive fan, so this is just sort of a page to talk about them.

Frozen is definitely my favorite, for all the obvious reasons: the dialogue is hilarious, the plot is great, the message is subtle but deep and all the characters have such individuality. Plus the animation is really stellar and the music is so fantastic. I think the whole soundtrack should have won an Oscar. Because, I mean, as good as Let It Go is, what about Fixer Upper and In Summer and Love Is An Open Door? *takes a deep breath*

I can never really put straight whether I like Brave or Tangled better, mostly because they're both good and bad at different things. Brave's plot has only one thread, but the richness of the setting and the characters help to make it interesting. On the other hand, Tangled is much funnier and while the characters are predictable, the twists and turns help add suspense. Brave's animation seems more vivid (and Merida actually looks like a real person) while Tangled isn't much for realistic scaling, though I do like how they gave Rapunzel the slightly buck teeth. At least she's not so perfect-princess looking like Elsa and Anna. They're beautiful, of course, but who else but a model could be that thin at eighteen?

What's your take on all of them? Feel free to fangirl/fanboy (is that a verb?) if you want!

@ Red:

The end of Frozen was a little too hunky-dory, especially after Anna comes back to life. Still, the point is that Elsa won't hurt Anna because she has accepted her power and it won't come out all erratic and dangerous anymore. The only reason she froze Arendelle was because it was all too repressed.

Red, while I respect your willingness to be the only guy to comment on the merits of three Disney princess movies (and/or discuss how terrible they were) surely you realize that you, like unlucky Paris before the Trojan war, if forced to choose between the three will end up kindling the wrath of several teen girls, who I assure you are quite as dangerous as Juno and Minerva ever were. A word of caution. ( and Scottish accents are brilliant, thank you very much)

Scottish accents ARE awesome. I like David Tennant just because of his accent. Seriously. I don't even watch Doctor Who and I still think it's great.

Brave. End of question.

I don't know which is my favorite. I really loved Brave because of the fighting and adventure. But Tangled and Frozen where good too. But Frozen is so crazy popular! At school I saw Frozen t-shirts and lunchboxes and other crazy stuff. Thankfully, I'm going to middle school next year and I'll probably see less of it.

Did you know that Frozen was supposed to be based on the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale The Snow Queen? In that story, the main characters are friends, a boy and a girl. A evil troll has a mirror that makes whoever has a part of it see the whole world as evil. When the boy gets a piece of the mirror accidentally, he runs away because he thinks the girl is evil, and the snow queen captures him and makes him a slave in her palace. Luckily the girl comes and rescues the boy. It's really different from the movie Frozen.

I thought it was really cool how the true love in the movie was sister love not romantic love. I think that's really great after all the other Disney princess movies being more about romance.

It's really about girl power, so I think it's great!

@ Arianne:

I read the real Snow Queen story recently, and I like how Disney changed it. I mean, it isn't really at all that similar to the short story, but I think it was cooler because of the sisterly thing and the Snow Queen (Elsa) wasn't a villainess.

@Everinne

Exactly what I thought! I also felt it was a bit interesting that the troll was evil in the Snow Queen story, but in Frozen the trolls were nice, saving Anna. Also how in the Snow Queen a girl saved a boy who was her friend but in Frozen a sister saved another.

All right. Tangled was pretty freaking awesome. 'Nuff said.

Brave just didn't capture my attention enough. It just...ehh. It was nice; I loved the characters and everything, but it didn't...stick.

Frozen I hate and love for a variety of reasons.

Pros:

- amazing animation

- great characters

- awesome songs

- when you look at it in depth, it's quite relatable

Cons:

- it wasn't realistic. If Anna froze completely, I'm sorry, but she can't just come back to life.

- it said that love was the answer to everything, which is lovely but way too repetitive and unoriginal.

- Okay, so the snowman can talk, yet the actual animal, the reindeer, can't?

- I HATE, HATE how Anna's all like, "You kind of set off an eternal winter...everywhere." GIRL, IT'S BEEN LIKE THREE DAYS! HOW WOULD YOU KNOW THAT IT'S A) ETERNAL AND B) EVERYWHERE? THAT WAS NEVER DISCUSSED!

- ALSO, IT COPIED THE LION KING.

If you look at it...

1. The main character runs away out of fear (Simba and Elsa).

2. They then proceed to sing a song about just going with the flow and not worrying (Hakuna Matata; Let it Go).

3. The bad guy tells them they're the cause of a loved one's death (Scar to Simba regarding Mufasa's death; Hans to Elsa regarding Anna's).

4. When they run away, they have no idea that everything is screwed up back home (the kingdom in Africa suffering without Simba; Arendelle in an eternal winter).

5. They have funny sidekick characters (Timon and Pumbaa; Sven and Olaf).

On a side note, I think I'm the only human being who liked Sven more than Olaf. Olaf was funny, but...eh. Sven was hilarious.

Another side note - Studies show that people who wear gloves are hiding something. Elsa was, obviously, but who else? Hans.

As you can see, I did not mention spoilers in this post as I assumed that anyone who visits the thread will have seen Tangled, Brave, and Frozen already.

Interesting points about Frozen's similarity to The Lion King. Maybe that's why I like both of them so much?

Well, the winter could be pretty eternal if it comes in the middle of summer, but I do see that Anna doesn't know it's everywhere--just in Arendelle.

Really hilarious point about Hans's gloves. I wonder if they did that on purpose.

I have no idea if the gloves were intentional, but it's still pretty hilarious either way. :P
