Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

I just saw this. I'm not going to waste your time trying to point out all the terrible misses about it, but I'll just say that it was a little better than the first and I can't wait until There and Back Again comes out so that this long drawn out torture can end. It feels just like a weak imitation of LOTR, shallow and messed with, without the magic and atmosphere that Middle Earth should have.

The best part about it is Lake Town, mostly because it wasn't all CGI and felt like a harken back to LOTR when everything was literally built from the ground up. Bard the Bowman, beside trying to be decked out as a Robin Hood that steals for the poor, did a decent job, but even Legolas wasn't nearly as cool as he was before. And Tauriel with Kili... gag me with a spoon. There is still no Dwarf that does anything for me except Balin, and even though Thorin doesn't beat up Bilbo much anymore, he still has little humanity.

And Smaug himself? Not so magnificent. He's huge and freaky, but so not real. And he seems too villanous! I didn't think he was so evil in the book. He's not in league with Sauron or anything, just happens to be greedy and small-hearted and Dragonish. And Bilbo never says "Never laugh at live Dragons." That's supposed to become the great proverb!!!

Has anyone else seen it, and what did you think of it?

I saw it about when it came out, and I loved it! I thought it was pretty accurate, in my opinion. Smaug was almost exactly as I imagined him and I thought Lake Town was cool. The barrel scene though- Bombar oh my gosh xD

If you hadn't read the book, I would say it was a really really good movie. I'm just too purist about films made from books. :/

I read The Hobbit, and I'm not that picky with the films. I was only really picky with the Harry Potter movies and Percy Jackson (Harry Potter being pretty darned good and Percy Jackson being: Hollywood, you can do better than this.)

I read "The Hobbit" a really long time ago so I don't remember it that well, but I really liked the movie. I thought it was better than the first...

I saw it on Saturday night. I loved it. I don't see what was wrong wwith it. I haven't read LoTR yet, but I read the Hobbit.

Sure, it was different. But it was goooodd. I loved Smaug. He was huge and terrible and terrifying and awesome. He looked so real and amazing. And I thought he acted awesome. The whole fight scene in the mountain, that was just . . . *faints*

I actually didn't mind Taurial as much as I thought I would. Even thought she wasn't in the book and that upset me a little, I still liked their relationship and all that. I liked the way they showed us the elves.

All and all, I loved it.

I covered my eyes and shook my head every time Tauriel and Kili even looked at each other. Just....uugh.

And I really hate that they're trying to imitate LoTR with The Hobbit when The Hobbit has a completely different feel to it. Less epic, more homey, and really good in its own way. They just tried to make it what it wasn't with the movie, rather than run with what the book of The Hobbit has to say for itself.

And then there's Smaug. Smaug the Stupendous. Smaug the Magnificent. I expected him to be really awesome from what I'd heard of him, so I tried very hard to find something I liked about him when I watched it. It didn't work. Smaug just didn't fit somehow, even though his gold scales were pretty cool and his voice when he was flying out of the Lonely Mountain was amazing. ("I am fire. I am death." or something like that.)

@ Captain Read:

THANK YOU. That was exactly the wrong point about it! Hobbit is NOT LOTR! It wasn't meant to be! It was written as a children's story and should have originally had NOTHING to do with Middle Earth! I know how it ended up it did have connections with the Ring, and the Gandalf scenes at Dol Guldur ("It is undoubtedly a trap") were kind of cool, but it just felt like a weak imitation of the Ring movies, without much individuality of its own (sorry, I messed up my pronouns like crazy there).

When Kili said to Tauriel, "I might have something down my trousers," I just wanted to punch Peter Jackson in the nose. And why the heck would Tauriel ever ride all the way to Lake Town just to see him? Makes no sense at all.

The scene when Smaug gets painted gold was probably one of the best scenes, even though I had no idea what it was for.

I saw this at my friend's birthday in December...  It was the first Tolkein inspired movie I had seen, and Laketown was definitely my favourite thing.  We had some occasions to whisper and laugh at things.  Particularly the barrel scene, which I always liked in the book.  It wasn't supposed to be a fight scene, though.

And the elves!  I had not encountered the elves!  Amazing epicness!

Also, what was with their pronunciation?  Smaouwg?  It's Smog!  As in the evil atmosphere choking pollution!  Not some contortion of vowels!

When Smaug got painted in gold everyone was joking that he was covered in melted butter...

So in general, I liked the movie, although I do want to see the first one, just to see Gollum.  Because it's not like I really liked him from the book or anything... (Incidently, when I first read The Hobbit, I imagined Gollum as this alligator thing standing upright in a purple suit with a bow tie and top hat... and he was like two feet tall.  Strangeness.)

The barrel scene was awesome, but in the book, didn't they go down in sealed barrels, completely without the notice of the elves? Well, I guess because they had to fight they couldn't be like sardines the whole time. Though trying to make Kili a hero still irks me. If they want to make anyone a hero, it should have been helpful Bilbo that jumped up and opened the gate. Isn't buglaring what he's suppoesd to do?

I know! I so hate how they changed Smaug's pronounciation! In LOTR the few times they mentioned him it was always pronounced "Smog" (because isn't that the whole point, with smoke, etc?) and so why all of a sudden is it "Smawg"? Just sounds bizarre.

The first movie was not quite as good, so don't expect very much if you see it. Still, Gollum was the best part, with the riddles and all.

Kili was a very unnecessary subplot.  Can't Hollywood make at least one movie without adding a gratuitous romance?

No, of course not. Romantic scenes are wonderful and they make lots of money off of them. Just buy their junk and enjoy it OR ELSE.

(nothing against The Hobbit)

I haven't seen it, but I have read The Hobbit three times and, based on your description, the movie certainly doesn't seem accurate.

I also have to agree that Balin is the only dwarf that I really felt a strong like for.

That was a really awkwardly formed sentence.

I'm going to stop typing now because I think my brain has officially shut off.

Ugh, Everinne, finally someone who agrees with me! It was terrible. In the barrel scene, the gate doesn't come down and there isn't a fight! And yes, Legolas was not nearly as cool. And Smaug, he was actually pretty cool. But Tauriel with Kili is the worst part! Elves and dwarves are natural born enemies. Ugh! And Tauriel was never even mentioned in the book. It was so bad, we left the theater before the movie was over.Yell
